Sebutan ini dalam konteks sejarah Nusantara dipakai untuk menyebut wilayah yang sekarang menjadi Provinsi DI Yogyakarta dan Wilayah Surakarta. Kedua daerah ini merupakan wilayah kekuasaan empat kerajaan ("Catur Sagatra") yang menjadi penerus dinasti Mataram.
