Category:Flanders edit

Flanders is an historic region, which overlaps Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. The category is currently used for both the Flemish Region and the Flemish Community.

The categorizations of the historic region, the region of Belgium, and the linguistic community are obviously very different.

So, I request the move of the contents Category:Flanders to Category:Flemish Region, in order to:

  • recover Category:Flanders for media files which are related to the historic region
  • individualize the different subjects for better understanding, to establish correct interwiki links with Wikipedia articles, and approprate categorization
  • name each category according to the correct names of these subjects (references: English Wikipedia and this official page).

Notice that User:Foroa has removed the move template, though the discussion is not finished. --Juiced lemon 19:27, 21 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • Flanders as a historic region used to be a countship coinciding with the current provinces West-Vlaanderen and Oost-Vlaanderen, later it used to overlap parts of Belgium, France and the Netherlands. This no longer so. Currently Flanders (see this official site) is the part of Belgium, consisting of the 5 Flemish provinces. In the Netherlands the erstwhile overlap is now called Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, in France: la Flandre française (French Flanders) (which is not the same as Vlaanderen). I strongly oppose the move. • Stupid Flanders. -Nard 19:05, 31 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
    • In reply to the person who gave me a civility warning for this comment, "Stupid Flanders" is a Homer Simpson quote. I thought it would be funny (if off-topic). It has nothing to do with Flemish people of today. -Nard 19:17, 31 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
      • A lesson for all of us that pop-cultural references originating in North American Anglophone culture will not always be recognised in ou multicultural and multilingual milieu! I didn't recognise the original reference, but your explanation gave me a chortle. Thanks all! Man vyi 19:24, 31 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
        • Just put an Brit and an American thogether: there already you have a completely different sense of humor. Let alone when switching to "real" different languages. --Foroa 20:51, 31 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

The Flag edit

https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flandre_(Belgique)#/media/File:Flag_of_Flanders.svg and not the flag of Nord-Pas-de-Calais !

Discussion edit

The word "Flemish region" is a (political) technicality which is not really used. I suggest to continue to use Flanders versus Wallonia, as this is the common usage and as being used on de en: and other Wikipedias. Please remove the move to Flemish region request. --Foroa 16:27, 19 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

You are wrong:
Flemish Region
Région flamande
Vlaams Gewest
Flemish Region” is the correct translation of both French and Dutch Wikipedia article names. More, your assertions are unsourced. --Juiced lemon 17:01, 19 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I am talking about practical use: see the top level categories in en:Category:Belgium, fr:Category:Belgique, nl:Categorie:België and de:Category:Belgien and tell me were the Walloon region and Flemish region are really used in the categories: everywere Flanders and Wallonia is used. You are just talking about a theorethical name that has been introduced to make a difference between regios and communities. If it was so obvious as you think, you would see those names used in categories in at least a couple of places, dont you think so ? To me, there is nothing to be gained to change that and to make it different with the other Wikipedia categorie organisations. Try changing Wallonia to Walloon region...
Technically speaking, the "German Community of Belgium" is not on its place, but I have no good solution yet as this would require another Belgian split about the three communities. --Foroa 17:34, 19 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
To use an American expression: if it ain't broken, dont fix it. --Foroa 06:15, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I don't care of your top level categories in other Wikipedias, because Wikimedia Commons is not an encyclopedia! We are classifying media files, not articles!
The Commons categories are named according to Wikipedia articles, assuming that these names comply with the Commons rules.
I quoted some text from this official page:
There are three Regions. The names of the three regional institutions are borrowed from the name of the territory they represent. So we refer to (from north to south) the Flemish Region, the Brussels-Capital Region and the Walloon Region.
It reveals a perfect match between the official names and the English Wikipedia article names:
Flemish Region
Brussels-Capital Region
Walloon Region
Our ambition is to do professional job, and therefore we cannot retain slang/popular terms, or childish language. --Juiced lemon 09:24, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think it depends on what we want to do with this category. If we only want to include things that have to do with the Flemish Region (that is: the five Flemish provinces without the Brussels-Capital Region), we should change the name.
But there is also the Flemish Community, which is also responsible for the Flemish institutions (such as schools, theatres, libraries and museums) in the Brussels-Capital Region. The competencies of the Flemish community have been unified with those of the Flemish Region and are exercised by one directly elected Flemish Parliament based in Brussels.
Subcategories like Politics of Flanders and Symbols of Flanders have also strong connections with the Flemish Community. In my opinion it makes no sense splitting up those two, and therefore the name of this category should stay as it is. Dinsdagskind 17:38, 12 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
As an historical region, Flanders has symbols, but to current politics. So Category:Politics of Flanders would be renamed Category:Politics of the Flemish Region. --Juiced lemon 22:27, 12 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
But Flemish politics has also to do with the Flemish Community. As I've said, the Region and the Community share one parliament and of course the Flemish political parties have to do with both.
If there is going to be a Category:Politics of the Flemish Region there also has to be a Category:Politics of the Flemish Community but their contents will be 95-99 % the same. So that's why it makes no sense. Dinsdagskind 08:22, 13 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Category:Politics of the Flemish Community can be a redirection to Category:Politics of the Flemish Region, and you can add a note in Category:Flemish Community about that. --Juiced lemon 09:02, 13 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think you're making it way too difficult! And if Flanders is a slang/popular term or childish language, we should also use Category:Kingdom of Belgium, Category:Federal Republic of Germany and Category:McDonald's Corporation instead of Category:Belgium, Category:Germany and Category:McDonald's. Dinsdagskind 10:36, 13 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Short summarizing of the proposed move: nonsense, utter nonsense of someone who hasn't got a clue what he's talking about. --LimoWreck 20:52, 21 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
You are uncivil and you don't say a single sensible word about the issue. Can you try to be a bit more persuasive? --Juiced lemon 21:15, 21 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Of course we can. --LimoWreck 20:00, 22 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Category references to other wiki's edit

I changed the references to other wiki's from article references to category references as done on all othere wiki's: categories refer to categories, artikels to artikels. I don't understand why this has been reverted by --User:Juiced lemon.--Foroa 09:08, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Quoted from Commons:Naming categories:
categories are for Commons Wikimedia what articles are for any Wikipedia
So, linking Commons categories with other Wikipedias is currently a problem, since two logical reasonings give different ways to link Commons categories. --Juiced lemon 09:32, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
