Is futsal a variant of association football? edit

According to the very first sentence of the English Wikipedia article (as of 11 August 2010), futsal is defined as a variant of association football. Also, looking at the category hierarchy of futsal in the English, Spanish, and Portuguese Wikipedias, it is placed under "football" or "football variants" in each one. If futsal is not considered a variant of association football, we need to build consensus across Wikipedias to reflect this fact, and then we should remove this category from "Association football variants." If consensus establishes, however, that futsal is a variant of association football, then it should stay categorized as such. TFCforever (talk) 20:56, 11 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

After researching its usage in categorization and templates on the English Wikipedia, as well as the article "Futsal" itself, I have come to the conclusion that futsal is indeed a variant of association football. I believe that because of this its categorization should be parallel that of other association football variants, such as five-a-side football, beach soccer, and indoor soccer. Therefore, I will keep it in the category association football variants and remove the categories "team sports" and "ball games" to eliminate redundancy (these two categories both hold the category football in them, which in turn holds the association football category, which in turn holds the aforementioned "variants" category). If anyone believes that my reasoning and actions in this matter have been lacking or problematic in any way, please reply here or at my talk page, and then we can work together on a solution. Cheers! A problem we are facing often. Everything comes from something else, so most things can be hidden in a chain of categories, also in ball games: jeu de paume, tennis, badmington, squash, ... For finding and organisation purposes, I think that you have to work as flat as possible: all "adult" sport members should be on an equal level, as it is rathet hard to explain to an occasional user that Futsal is not a "ball game" nor a "team sport". You can hide it in a correct historical dependence tree, but you cannot expect that all people do the same research as you did to find the thing. --Foroa (talk) 06:29, 14 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
