Train stations or railway stations edit
Some of the county level sub-categories below here are called 'Railway stations in xyz', others are called 'Train stations in xyz'. We should probably standardise terminology. I'd suggest we adopt 'Railway stations in xyz', as:
- That conforms to the naming standards in the English Wikipedia
- The term 'Train station' makes me cringe.

- Local being anywhere outside the United States presumably? I disapprove of Americanism, but I have to live with it. Be that as it may, I don't know if Commons has a policy on use of English, but the Wikipedia version is American spelling and phrases for American articles, etc., British for British articles, and "as originally written" for neutral topics.Tivedshambo 05:46, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
- You disapprove Americanism, and yet you didn't give your opinion about this deletion request.
- You must consider that Wikimedia Commons is an international project, made to help people to find media files. Therefore, Commons rules about terminology may differ from matching rules of the English Wikipedia. - Intersting. I don't disagree with universality principle. And when writing a name, we should clearly go for the name which is most familar to most people. But I don't see any real evidence that 'train station' is that name. My experience of travelling in the US is that the term 'train station' isn't that well used; all but the biggest 'mainline' stations are referred to as depots, not stations. Rapid transit stations are almost always referred to as '<system> station' (eg. 'MARTA station'), and really big stations are usually referred to by their proper names (eg. 'Grand Central station'). On the other hand India (with an English speaking population larger than either the UK or the US; and a much greater per-capita rail use than the US) uses the term 'railway station'. -- Chris j wood 17:09, 14 July 2007 (UTC)
- If you agree with universality principle, we have the same opinion:
- either Category:Train station is renamed, as all categories with the same expression
- either Category:Train station is kept, and we don't change any category with this expression
- So, you can add a move request to Category:Train station and open a new discussion in Commons:Categories for discussion. It seems to me that the name of Train station is the result of the history of this article: I think this is an insignificant reason for Commons, so I'll support you if you have strong argumentation. --Juiced lemon 19:03, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

- No. There is no commons rule that states that an image should be in its own category. So anyone is allowed to drop railways images here without having a specifgic category for it. It would be different if the category was named "Railway stations in England by county". --Foroa (talk) 21:27, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

- The "by county" category is your interpretation of how it should be categorised. A category name "Railway stations in England by county" would be coherent with your way of interpreting and would be a meta category. With the current category name, one could easily delete a couple of counties and categorise some railway stations pictures or cats directly under this category without using intermediate county categories; some could be considered useless by some people (for example Solihull). --Foroa (talk) 22:56, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
