The looks like "Category:Rivers of England by region". There should also be a "Category:Rivers of England". Snowmanradio (talk) 09:23, 19 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm creating "Rivers of England by county" and "Rivers of England by name". Not sure what should be left in this category. Dave.Dunford (talk) 11:10, 20 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
On second thoughts, I'll create "Rivers of England by county" as planned, but put the individual rivers alphabetically into this category, so no need for "Rivers of England by name". Dave.Dunford (talk) 11:24, 20 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

2011 edit

Some good work seems to have been started here, but not finished yet. In particular, this top-level category should not contain individual rivers or images unless they are specific to a particular river. Some issues that need to be addressed are

  • Different rivers with the same name (e.g. Ouse, Avon)
  • Single rivers that cross county boundaries (e.g. Thames)
  • Single rivers that cross country boundaries (e.g. Wye)
  • Tributaries of larger rivers: (e.g. Biss as of Avon)- should they be sub categories of the larger river, and how to deal with any overlaps that may occur. Rodhullandemu (talk) 00:48, 29 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Update: Images have been moved to more specific categories, at least by county, and preferably by river. "Tributaries of" categories have been added somewhat "on the fly", but the underlying structure will be fleshed out according to w:List of rivers in England, although I've found that list to be incomplete. I think I may take a day's break to allow things to settle, and get some fresh air, but comments are welcome. Rodhullandemu (talk) 01:20, 6 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

I did quite a lot of the early tidying - thanks for taking on the baton. Although I can see why it's been done, I slightly miss the list of all the English rivers and their categories, and I think it was useful. Any objection to creating a "Rivers of England by name" meta-category and then adding all the river categories (regardless of county) to that? Dave.Dunford (talk) 12:47, 14 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
I think if someone knows the name of a river, but not which county it flows through, it will show up in the search box. So I'm undecided as to whether a separate alphabetical categorisation is really necessary. Meanwhile, I'm finding that the Geograph uploads are somewhat inexactly categorised, so will continue with that for now; after all, I'm only just at "E" by county! Having said the above, I've now created Category:Rivers of England by name and Category:Tributaries in England by river. It has to be said that our search facilities are less than optimal, and for the time being, any addition is probably going to be a plus. Meanwhile, there is still tons of work to be done drilling down through the category structure, which I'm not convinced is optimal; however, I'll stick with it for the time being. Excellent work. If you'd like to share the burden, drop me a line to coordinate (though my editing time is limited). I'll carry on categorising Geograph pictures in the meantime. Dave.Dunford (talk) 09:56, 17 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
