Names

Could someone rename these images, please? Some names are outright misleading ("Amur in Russia" is associated primarily with the river, not the oblast; "Astrakhan in Russia" is what we would say about the city, and so on, and so forth. Also, it would be helpful if the file name contained the date as of which the map is current (in this case, March 2008). There are several similar maps which show different borders between 2005 and 2008, with the most recent in Category:Locator maps of oblasts in Russia as of 2008-03. Please leave it that way. Filenames used to be kept simple. That way it's easy to apply en gros and still descriptive enough to pick the right file. More description is only needed where short name is not enough (Moscow could be an oblast and city) or in future when more maps applying this scheme come up (but that's not the case, yet). Adding things like "Oblast" "Republic" and so forth makes it more difficult to actually link these files in the WP. Plus: it matches naming scheme in many other countries, cf eg Category:SVG locator maps of states of the United States (location map scheme) or Category:SVG locator maps of regions in France (location map scheme) or Category:SVG locator maps of regions of Belarus (location map scheme).--TUBS 14:10, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

That the short names are not enough for most of these maps is exactly my point. When one sees a map called "Astrakhan in Russia", they expect to see the location of the city of Astrakhan, not the location of Astrakhan Oblast, and something like "Nenets in Russia" makes no sense at all (is it the map showing the location of some person of Nenets ethnicity in Russia? "Nenets", after all, is an adjective.). The titles are simply wrong that way. Plus, when one needs to use one of the maps in this cat, they will actually have to look up the file names individually because they are unpredictable and don't match the names of the actual articles (making en gros applications more difficult, not easier). That's not user-friendly at all. In the cat I mentioned above, all files are named consistently, which helps a lot when one deals with the maps in bulk. As for the dates, if you had been around to update the federal subjects maps in 2005-2008, you would have known what a pain in the ass it is to sort out the maps which are undated and all mixed up together. Ok. I got your point. Still, is the naming now really odd or something? Just understand the "code" behind all that. Forget about grammar. Forget about whether it makes sense or not. Forget about adjectives. Forget about if someone may confuse oblasts, krais, republics, cities, tribal names, or even rivers. Forget about rare cases that someone feels lucky and types in (wo ever having a look into this category) "Nenets in Russia.svg" and expects to see a map where Nenets settle (do they settle?). Just take a look into Federal_subjects_of_Russia#List_of_federal_subjects and take the first word you find there. Skip additional words like krai,republic and so forth. Add to that word "in Russia.svg" and you are all set. How easy is that? I have to admit: In rare cases this doesn't work and you have to add something for a suitable map (like in the case of Moscow). Got me? Think of it as an code. And if maps are about to change due to reorganizations of Russian administratve structure, I'll name the file "xxx in Russia 2013.svg" or so. No big deal.

But. And here's my offer. If you have a cool new naming scheme (maybe similar like that one in the "Locator maps of oblasts in Russia as of 2008-03" cat) that I understand (no kyrillian letters please! No Russian please!) just add Rename tags to my files (all my files!!!) and propose new names. Your job - not mine. I'm cool with that though. Otherwise leave that category alone.
