Kartrummet

edit

I've talked to Multichill about this and he asked med to issue a request here. It's my first time, so pardon any mistakes.

I would like to upload the maps at Kartrummet, a project run by Geobiblioteket, a part of Stockholm University Library (SUL). I have been in touch with Lantmäteriet, the successor agency of the various gov't agencies that created the maps, and their legal expertise considers anything older than 70 years to be out of copyright. Lantmäteriet considers itself to be the copyright holders and since an agency doesn't die, date of publication, not death of artist/cartographer/whatever plus 70 years is what's relevant in this case. The person I talked to is even going to e-mail me a justification based on the current law.

To make this completely watertight, I can also provide a release mail from SUL that makes the scans free as well (Swedish copyright law is rather iffy concerning reproductions).

Once we have proper permission we can do the actual upload.

  1. I'll loop over all links at http://kartavdelningen.sub.su.se/kartrummet/kartskapet.htm (probably going to use beautifulsoup for this)
  2. I'll take each .jpg file at a page link http://kartavdelningen.sub.su.se/kartrummet/AB_haradskartor.htm
  3. File name is derived from the link title at main and subpage so for example File:Stockholms län, Bro och Väto skeppslag.jpg for the very first file
  4. For the description I'll make a template which I can substitute (pre filed out {{Information}} etc) and a source template for this batch upload
  5. All maps should probably be categorized in Category:Maps of Sweden, Category:Maps of counties of Sweden or one of the subcategories.

Please also upload the tiffs for restoration and have them linked in the other versions.--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 12:43, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please note that the copyright situation seems to have become rather complicated. Please see discussion here. It appears that we might need to exclude maps that have names on them.

I've spoken to Torsten at SU, and we've agreed that I should solicit Lantmäteriet for a release. I made an impression on one of the people at their marketing division, so it might actually work. However, it'll probably have to wait until after the holidays. I'll drop a note here when I know whether this will be a go or not.

Would be nice if they agreed. Good luck! Multichill (talk) 22:37, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Any news? Multichill (talk) 20:51, 15 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've been rather busy, but I plan on calling Lantmäteriet next week. I'm hoping they'll be able to see the value of making this available on Commons when all the work has already been done.

I called Lantmäteriet up a while ago, was asked to state my case by e-mail and had it forwarded to another person to whom I had to explain the whole thing over again. Still waiting for a reply.

Reply received. Request has been forwarded to another person.

I received a reply today. Lantmäteriet is currently not interested. Hopefully they'll change their minds in the near future.
Most of the oldest maps are most likely public domain, but verifying that all creators have been dead more than 70 years is rather difficult. I don't feel like I have the time for it right now. If anyone would like to try, I suggest contacting Lantmäteriet and asking for information about these works. I'm willing to help out with information about previous contacts and such.

The discussion from 2009 was misguided. The names mentioned on some of the maps are the engravers' names, not the cartographers. However, in Swedish book publishing, while authors, translators and illustrators have copyright, engravers do not. That is, if Carl Larsson made a painting to illustrate a book, he had copyright for life+50, now life+70, but the engraver who made it possible to print that illustration did not get any copyright. Engravers were craftspeople similar to operators of a printing press in that way, and not regarded as artists. --LA2 (talk) 03:16, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, that does for a somewhat different situation. But how does that affect the situation in real terms? For example, should we automatically that maps charted around 1900 are public domain?
