Georeferenced maps of the United States from the Mechanical Curator collection

Wikimedia and the British Library are trying to georeference old maps and plans found in the Mechanical Curator collection, a set of 1 million digitised book illustrations from 19th century books. (See here for more information).

This page links to maps and plans that have already been georeferenced, from books included in this index page of titles related to the United States. The headings below reflect the subsections of that index page -- based on the titles of the books, not necessarily the content of the individual maps. Corresponding further maps and plans still available to georeference can be found via this accompanying georeferencing status page and then following any of the purple templated links there.

Maps and plans from other parts of the world can be found on this worldwide status page and completed page, including further maps that may relate to the United States in books on other index pages. However only a small fraction (about 5% in all) of the complete set of illustrations are maps and plans. Other illustrations can be found by browsing through the various book titles on the index pages; some suggestions on best practice for uploading to Commons can be found here.

To see georeferenced images
This page links to images that have been georeferenced for each subject-index page created based on the books' titles
  • Choose any of the  georef done templated links on the right with the gold backgrounds, and click to see images from a particular (book-level) subject area;
  • click through to the Flickr page for an individual image, and scroll the page down to find a link "View this map on the BL Georeferencer service".
  • then click on this to open the image in Georeferencer, superimposed on a modern map, with controls to zoom in or out and fade the image up or down.

There is also a corresponding georeferencing status page listing images still to do.


Other ways to find georeferenced images
  • A map which can be zoomed in, with a clickable link to each georeferenced map, can be found on this page at the BL
  • It is also possible to make precise searches for maps and plans from particular places, as described here, optionally specifying a given real-world size, for example [1]
