Category:National Register of Historic Places in Elliott County, KentuckyEdit

First off, it's empty, and as far as I can tell, it's never had any contents. Secondly, look at en:National Register of Historic Places listings in Elliott County, Kentucky — there's exactly one NR site in Elliott County, we don't have any images of it, and we don't even know where it is. We're definitely not likely to get any images of the site anytime soon, i.e. this category is likely to be empty for quite a long time. Nyttend (talk) 23:28, 1 February 2014 (UTC)

Category:Environment of BarbadoesEdit

ooops - a typo. Alan Liefting (talk) 08:12, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

Hm, Category:Environment of Barbados is empty, too. Are there any images coming? --rimshottalk 19:43, 27 February 2014 (UTC)
With a doubt! It is a high level country category and will have subcats as well. I have been creating a set empty "Environment of [country]" categories to preempt any uploading of suitable files. May as well be ahead of the game rather than creating categories on an ad hoc, as required basis. Alan Liefting (talk) 19:59, 27 February 2014 (UTC)
Actually, as creating a category costs one person a few seconds, but empty categories make things unnecessary cluttered for thousands of people, we don't pre-emptively create categories. --rimshottalk 20:57, 27 February 2014 (UTC)
Is that a guideline or policy? To me it makes sense to set up these empty categories because there is almost certain to be stuff that can immediately added to them. "Environment of [country]" is a high level category so we would expect it to exist and it would be easy to populate. Alan Liefting (talk) 21:19, 27 February 2014 (UTC)
I'm not aware of any guideline for this way or the other. The guidelines are written from the point of view of someone who has files in need of categories, not the other way around. I don't think creating categories without concrete plans of filling them is something that would to occur to most people. That may be the reason. --rimshottalk 23:26, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

Is there some sort of speedy deletion process to get rid of this unneeded category. It was created incorrectly because of a typo. Alan Liefting (talk) 21:21, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

Category:LowEdit

now an empty category, after a rename. i gave it some parent cats, but i just dont see any use for this category. Mercurywoodrose (talk) 17:19, 17 February 2014 (UTC)

Are there any plausible disambiguation targets beside Category:Low (band)? If yes, this should be disambiguated, otherwise redirected. In any case, deletion is probably a bad idea, as it will be re-created. --rimshottalk 21:23, 18 February 2014 (UTC)
I suppose we can redirect to either category:low-angle shots or category:Low Countries? or do we turn low into a disambig page? Im very new to the use of disambigs and redirects for categories on the commons, so please be patient until i better understand how this is done.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 02:56, 20 February 2014 (UTC)
Hm, I'm not so sure about "Low Countries", but if this has really been used for low angle shots, we should probably include that category somehow. Low is a pretty common surname, too. Therefore I propose to disambiguate to:
--rimshottalk 17:49, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

Disambiguated as proposed. Feel free to add more disambiguation targets if you find any. I also closed the discussion at Commons:Categories for discussion/2013/11/Category:Low. --rimshottalk 19:56, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

Category:White GenocideEdit

Previously nominated by me for deletion/renaming, since then emptied of images (all were original art not notable enough to stay here). I think that until we have any images related to fears of loss of white majority in europe (a presumably valid topic, if highly controversial and not well documented), this should be a redirect to Category:Armenian Genocide, which is the more common use of the term. since i already nominated for deletion, i dont want to also be the person turning this category into a redirect, which i might have done for a similar, noncontroversial empty category. Category:Gemini (astrology) actorEdit

Not a useful categorisation of people. Astrology is disputed (at best) and to categorise by anything more specific than year of birth seems to be pointless; category naming is also inconsistent with Commons guidelines (people apart from individuals are categorised as plurals). Also for consideration:

Category:Gemini (astrology) actress and
Category:Taurus (astrology) actor and Category:Taurus (astrology) actress and
Category:Cancer (astrology) actor and Category:Cancer (astrology) actress and
Category:Leo (astrology) actor and Category:Leo (astrology) actress and
Category:Virgo (astrology) actor and Category:Virgo (astrology) actress and
Category:Libra (astrology) actor and Category:Libra (astrology) actress. I don't think there are any more. Rodhullandemu (talk) 19:34, 18 February 2014 (UTC)
  • I say pause on this. Astrological information is important to people and I want to respect that, but this information should be available as a by-product of putting in dates of birth into Wikidata. Wikidata will establish this more permanently than would otherwise be possible and from there, people ought to be able to do category intersections to search for types of people by birthday. I hope this happens within two years. Blue Rasberry (talk) 19:56, 18 February 2014 (UTC)
  • I say kill these categories. Not everything that can be stated about a person/file needs to be tracked. What next? Categories for third letter of surname? Categories for latitude of birth? Categories for images by percentage of blue pixels? Houses by number of windowpanes? - Jmabel ! talk 21:24, 18 February 2014 (UTC)

  • Symbol delete vote.svg Delete:
  • I agree that Astrology is not only a silly, overrated superstition, but even a dangerous delusion, and that the tolerance it especially enjoys is a tragic overlooking by the rationalist forces of human society.
  • That however should not preclude Commons categories to cover astrological information, in order to properly categorize the astrological material we legitimately host. In what concerns classifying birthdates under their Western Astrology regent zodiac signs, the proper way to do it is to populate the categories Category:Aries (astrology) to Category:Pisces (astrology) with all day categories from Category:1 January to Category:31 December. That would eventually include each categorized birthday under its zodiac sign — serving the needs of all kinds of perusers of Commons, included deluded believers.
  • However the categories listed in this DR in no way serve an useful purpose in our system: For their wording is hopelessly mangled, for the lack of a consistent tree where they would fit (as said above), and for the clueless way they were populated, with scattered individual photos instead of person categories most of those photos are included in — showing that this is not a worthy effort at categorizing, but just a misuse of the category function to emulate previous attempts of having such “galleries” hosted as image files, dully deleted.

Nominating for deletion. Empty and unlikely category: Only file was File:Bristol Faire Harpist.JPG, which was was in Bristol (Kenosha County), not the city of Kenosha. Closeapple (talk) 08:21, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

I have no objection against deletion of this one file category. Those cats can also by deleted.) --Elgewen (talk) 13:28, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
For what it's worth, I see why you thought it was in the city: I found 3 or 4 other files labeling the Bristol fair as "Kenosha" also. It turns out that the Faire's address is Kenosha for post office purposes. (For anyone who cares: Legally, it's actually in the formerly-unincorporated town of Bristol (rural/no municipality), which was annexed by village of Bristol (newly-created municipality) in 2010. And just to drive everyone crazy, somehow the Faire managed to run its phone line over the state border: +1 847-395-xxxx is an Antioch, Illinois phone number.) --Closeapple (talk) 19:52, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
