- The word "crop" can also mean "framing" in photography terms. No actual cutting of the image needs to have been made. It simply refers to the way the photographer has selected the scene. Since you are new here (like you wrote on another nom), there might be photo terms that are unfamiliar to you. You find most of them at COM:PT. --Cart (talk) 19:16, 21 May 2024 (UTC)

The photos kept here are used in Wikipedias all over the world, as well as all the Wiki sister projects, schools, museums, organisations, and thousands of others that get their photos from Commons. The guy seems to lower his head to fit it into the frame :-) The arm and hand in the foreground suffer from motion blur. Probably the shutter speed was not fast enough. The background is not very sharp, and the light is dull around the man with red jumper. - Info It's probably (once again) a somewhat daring nomination, but I really like the picture. That was ultimately the deciding factor for the nomination. The motif is a simple gate in the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park. The basis for this photo was taken using the ICM technique. This photo was enhanced in color and an additional layer was added with the mirrored photo. The two resulting layers were blended together. I lack the courage to nominate an even more intense version. ;-) --XRay 💬 07:15, 19 May 2024 (UTC)

- Oppose If it was an original photograph, it would have been interesting, but it seems to be 100% symmetrical at a pixel level through the vertical axis, which means it is more digitally composed (like two parts copy-pasted on a software) than natural. Something abstract, but too far from a real photograph or a real subject. Moreover, the appearance looks weird around the yellow lines, there are kind of artifacts, and this rupture is very visible, as if there were different layers. Overall the result is not very aesthetic, in my opinion. Sorry -- Basile Morin (talk) 11:09, 19 May 2024 (UTC)

- Info Purple martin in flight, slowing down as it approaches its nest. Spent a long time try to get a sharp photo of these very fast birds -- I was happy with this one.
Note: I tried something with the sky that I haven't attempted before, pulling a cloud from another shot taken at the same place at the same time from roughly the same direction. I don't know if that's too much retouching for FPC, but erring on the side of disclosure (it didn't affect the bird itself -- just improved the background a little). all by — Rhododendrites talk | 23:36, 18 May 2024 (UTC) - Support — Rhododendrites talk | 23:36, 18 May 2024 (UTC)

- Comment It is mentioned but that doesn't make it acceptable. We can't go around replacing backgrounds. Where would that stop? Charlesjsharp (talk) 21:09, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
- Why can't we? Restricting FP to the rules of photojournalism and photo contests would leave out a bunch of interesting candidates. Julesvernex2 (talk) 21:40, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
- You have never manipulated a background (or a foreground)? All of the out-of-focus twigs, distracting leaves, bird/bug-specks in the background, etc. that you've photographed -- you've never removed them? Pay no mind to extraordinary feats of AI-enabled sharpening, AI-based denoising, selective tone adjustments, and all other manner of post-processing, but add a cloud (a cloud in the sky at that place and at that time, even) and all of a sudden I've crossed a bright line? I'm not saying it shouldn't matter -- I know it'll go against some people's sensibilities, which is why I highlighted it in the nomination statement, and anyone is free to oppose if they wish -- but this Arbiter of What's Acceptable stuff is too much. — Rhododendrites talk | 21:51, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
- Technically, any panorama which includes sky and clouds will have several spots in the sky where parts are from other neighboring photos, so in fact replaced and often tweaked/reshaped by the processing program to look nice. I can guarantee that the sky never looked exactly like in this image, because it is a product of the program that stitched the panorama. We accept that without question because they are declared as panoramas and we know they are "manipulated". As long as the alteration is openly declared in a very clear manner (which has been made here), I see no problem with entering such photos here at FPC. It's just a matter of classification, and in each case votes can decide how much they are willing to tolerate in an FPC. Ideally it would be great if the original was found in the file's upload history so that we can see each step, I think that would help people decide how they are going to vote. In this case, I suspect there is no great difference. --Cart (talk) 22:17, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
- For good measure, I've uploaded the version before the sky adjustment and reverted. Note that the uploaded file is also before another pass at tone adjustments/white balancing so it looks slightly different in other [more mundane] ways. — Rhododendrites talk | 22:40, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
- It is indeed a small but surprisingly effective change! A small nitpick: those beautiful steel blue feathers above the eyes got quite a bit duller after the tonal adjustments. Julesvernex2 (talk) 12:18, 21 May 2024 (UTC)

- Oppose I agree with Charles that heavy-handed manipulations (like sky replacements) applied to images which will be used in a context where the audience can expect a realistic depiction of the subject shouldn't be featured here. As image manipulations seem to come up more often these days, there might be a need for a more in-depth discussion about what's ok and what's not. --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 04:51, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
- A discussion has been opened on the FPC talk page. --Cart (talk) 12:07, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
- The "heavy-handed manipulation" didn't change the subject at all, so if the point is to ensure a photo of a martin looks like a martin that's irrelevant here. If it's to ensure a martin could be seen in front of a realistic background, the fact that it's the same sky from the same place/time would seem pretty realistic. So what's left is an arbitrary line whereby using AI to manipulate an image's noise/sharpness, stitching images, using content-aware fill, outright removing pieces like disturbing plants and smears, etc. is acceptable and this is not. I would feel less strongly about this if people just said "it offends my photographer's sensibilities in ways that a wide range of other manipulations and 'unrealities' do not" rather than act as though this is unrealistic but the rest of what we see at FPC is completely realistic. — Rhododendrites talk | 13:51, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
- Support I'm fairly new to this but I think the concerns about the background are overblown. It's a great photo and probably took a lot of patience and effort to make. Toadspike (talk) 16:32, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
- Comment I have no particular objection to the addition of the cloud in the background, so long as the effect is realistic and the modification is clearly stated. @Rhododendrites: Anyhow, what was your aim? What effect were you looking for? From an estetic point of view, both pictures are valuable, but, according to me, the original one is sharper and has better colors. --Harlock81 (talk) 17:11, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

- Info White ibis. For some reason, a flock of white ibis has started nesting in this weird spot in New Jersey, hundreds of miles north of their usual range. I took many photos, but like this one for the way the sunlit leaves kind of vignette the bird -- kind of like a zoo shot (but it's wild). all by — Rhododendrites talk | 23:04, 18 May 2024 (UTC)

- Hmm. No action on this yet. I'm a little surprised because I'm quite happy with the natural "vignetting". It looks perhaps a little busy as a thumbnail -- would recommend viewing at full size. We'll see. :) — Rhododendrites talk | 22:01, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
- Comment: I think a portrait crop would work better. --The Cosmonaut (talk) 00:08, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks. I played with crops a bit -- perhaps a square crop, even -- but with a portrait you lose the "vignetting" that I like so much. It's possible it's just me that likes that, though. :) Would be curious to hear additional opinions before offering an alternative. — Rhododendrites talk | 17:30, 21 May 2024 (UTC)

- Nice photo! Are you sure he is a tanner or has there been a simple mix-up in the translation? A tanner is someone who process the raw hides into leather, a very hazardous and revolting job. After that the leather goes to a currier who dyes and prepare the leather before it can be made into different things by a leather worker. Traditionally, such craftsmen are called "saddlers" even if they make other things from leather than saddles. Perhaps he performs all three professions and we only see one of them (leather working) here in the photo. Love the cat! :-) --Cart (talk) 17:46, 17 May 2024 (UTC)

- Hello @A.Savin, I took this picture in a boat aroud Kerkennah, it was around the Island but I don't know the exact gps position. Atef Ouni (talk) 09:36, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
- And if you don't know the camera position, you add false coordinates? --A.Savin 09:37, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
- I think that having approximate information is better than not having any, I am not trying to mislead anyone and I never intended to put incorrect information. Knowing where Kerkennah is located to locate the boat used, the fisherman and the equipment used is information that could always be useful to any enlightened mind. It was certainly very easy to put the GPS coordinates in the water around Kerkennah but I thought that with a minimum of wit we would understand that the position given is that of the island around which we use these boats. Atef Ouni (talk) 09:59, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
- A way of avoiding misinterpretations about the location is to not enter the location using "N-W-degrees-minutes" system {{Location|34°42'0"N|11°10'48"E}} but instead use the decimal numbers rounded down to two decimals {{Location|34.70|11.18}} when you write it in the information box. Yes, the wiki-system will show the coordinates with the N and E, but for anyone who examines what you have written, it will be clear that the coordinates are estimated. This is a practice used by some photographers of endangered species so that they will be left in peace. While somewhat exact coordinates are appreciated for photos like this, I think any effort is better than none. You can also add the reason for the inexact location to the 'description' on the file page. --Cart (talk) 11:10, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
