"model upload" - could you help? edit

I'd like to upload several pictures of the Library of Congress. I would like to have one "model" which I can then follow for pretty much all the other images. Could someone therefore look at my first sample image and tell me

  1. whether the copyright is okay as is
  2. whether the licensing is okay
  3. whether all necessary/ recommendable information is given
  4. whether the "digital ID" of the picture is in fact the one that I'm indicating. (see numbers indicated as "source")
  5. whether some of the information is in fact unnecessary/superfluous--in that case I'll be happy to save the time (which will add up if I upload a number of pictures) to copy it into Wikimedia and, besides, save a few kb for the Commons...

Thanks for your help!!!! --Ibn Battuta 08:20, 10 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

PS: And let me ask one more question that's been piquing me for a while: What is actually preferred, arranging single images on pages or in categories?--Ibn Battuta 08:42, 10 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The description looks okay. When I upload LoC images, I like to add a link to appropriate wikipedia articles, and abstracts from SumItUp, to provide further info.
Other than that, I've made a couple changes that you can see - 1. the digital ID for {{LOC-image}} is the tail end of the hdl.loc.gov URL you'll find under "DIGITAL ID" at the end of the source page. 2. I changed the license; the exact photographer is unidentified, but G. Eric Matson himself died in 1977, so PD-old seems doubtful. The rights info page for that collection (found via the "About Collection" link) indicates that the photos have been dedicated to the public domain, so my preference is for a {{PD-author}} license, with a link to the rights page for details. Others may have different preferences, though.
One last thing - it would be good if you can edit and upload the images at maximum resolution, or close to it. You can get that from the "Retrieve uncompressed archival TIFF version" link. In the case of this test image, it would be around 2000 x 3000 pixels, which is much better if someone wanted to use this in print (disk space is not a major concern). --Davepape 17:01, 10 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]
Thanks a lot! As for the resolution: Unfortunately I don't have any editing programs--just an expired Corel Photo Album to do some cropping and some *very* rough (automatic :o( ...) contrast/color editing. If I download the .tiff file, however, I cannot even do that. Is there some freeware program that can at least edit and do some minor stuff? And maybe I'll repeat my question about categories vs. pages: Should I rather open a page or a category if I want to make a new subdivision in which I want to put the images? Thanks, Ibn Battuta 17:27, 10 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Commons:Software lists various free tools that might be useful. I find the Gimp to be fine for most image manipulation (just learn to use the basic crop & color adjusting tools for what you want to do). As for pages vs. categories, that's a big, unending debate. My personal preference is to use both - put all images in categories, and when it seems appropriate, also use a gallery page for a more refined presentation. --Davepape 18:12, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, now I've downloaded the large file, started to get acquainted with the Gimp, saved the file in the xcf format, thought now I'm fine... and then I get the message "Upload warning. It is recommended that files are no larger than 5 MB; this file is 16 MB.", followed by "This file may contain malicious code, by executing it your system may be compromised."
What should I change about "image:Gethsemane monk in garden.xcf"? I guess changing the file format would probably be a first step (preferablyl to which format?)? Thanks a lot, Ibn Battuta 18:43, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
XCF is Gimp's special native format, which you'd probably only want to use while editing an image; it's not a format that web browsers will recognize. You should save the image as a JPEG for uploading to Commons (just change the extension to ".jpg" when saving, and Gimp should figure it out). That should also make it a reasonable size. --Davepape 20:08, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks--now I saved it in JPEG format, but it's still larger than 8MB. Should I save it with a lower resolution/ with a lower quality?
Do you happen to know an answer to my other question here? --Ibn Battuta 21:57, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm - hard to know for sure why the image is so huge, but yes, reducing the quality or resolution would usually be the next step to make it smaller. Quality somewhere in the range 70 to 90 is normal; a modern digital camera image can be roughly 3000x2000 pixels - making your image around that size ought to give something no more than 3 megabytes (half that size will still be decent, and will make the file much smaller still).
I'm afraid I don't have an answer for your other question. --Davepape 22:23, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Begbie Image edit

I have uploaded Image:Begbie statue.jpg but I am unsure of its status. It is a photograph I took of a statue located in the public lobby of a building. I intend to use it at Matthew Baillie Begbie but thought I should check here first. --KenWalker 08:00, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to me that the sculpture itself is copyrighted by Ralph Sketch. He must have died in the late 1990s;[1] he published a book on "equestrian sculpture" in 1986.[2] Thus your photo is a derivative work of a copyrighted original.
Within Canada, publishing the image should be fine as freedom of panorama in Canada also applies to sculptures "permanently situated in a public place or building" (§32.2 of the Canadian Copyright Act C-42).
This is not the case in other countries, though. In the U.S., there is no freedom of panorama for sculptures, and publication of the image there would be subject to the consent of the rights holders on the sculpture. Ditto for all countries where freedom of panorama does not apply within buildings (e.g., Germany), or does not apply to sculptures. Lupo 09:14, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Very interesting. I am in Canada. Does that mean that I can add this from Canada to a Wikipedia article based on the fact it is done from here, or does it mean I can't because the servers are in the US or that I can't because when published it goes beyond Canada? --KenWalker 03:02, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
My personal take is that you can't, and that in fact you shouldn't have uploaded the image. Our basic rule is that an image must be PD or fine to publish under a free license in both its country of origin (Canada, in this case) and in the U.S (where our servers are). This image is not ok in the U.S. It should be tagged {{Derivative}} and deleted. Lupo 13:02, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
But under that reasoning, shouldn't we be deleting all photos of copyrighted sculptures? Currently there are many taken in the UK, Germany, Sweden, etc., and from what I've observed they're regarded as acceptable under freedom of panorama. --Davepape 16:02, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's a problem, isn't it? For freedom of panorama (which is essentially an exception to derivative works), we appear not to follow the "PD in source country and PD in the U.S." rule. Most of these images would be outdoor photographs, as far as I'm aware of. While such images of copyrighted statues technically are not ok in the U.S. (unless you've got the consent of the author of the statue, see e.g. Image:Babe Ruth statue.jpg), they are fine in many other countries. Apparently the community tolerates that deviation from the general rule. Images of copyrighted statues/sculptures in the U.S. have been deleted, though. And AFAIK only relatively few countries have a freedom of panorama that extends to the interior of buildings, so I don't think it'd be a good idea to have Image:Begbie statue.jpg. Lupo 16:17, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree it's a problem, as I suspect it extends beyond FOP to many other non-US PD claims that are usually accepted. Picking an example at random, Image:EJ Connellan 1950.jpg, if I read things correctly, was copyrighted in Australia until 2000, and so according to Hirtle is copyrighted 70 years pma in the US, despite being {{PD-Australia}}. I don't suppose this issue is being addressed rigorously anywhere, is it? --Davepape 17:33, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
AFAIK, no, it isn't. And yes, I agree that Image:EJ Connellan 1950.jpg would be copyrighted in the U.S. At {{PD-Russia}}, we even give the rules valid for the U.S., but I have the impression that people work with the 1954 date instead of the 1946/1942 date. But maybe something similar could be done at {{PD-Australia}}: add a line stating that only Australian photographs created before 1946 are PD in the U.S. (if they weren't copyrighted there before 1996 for some reason, such as a bilateral treaty or someone having registered the photo at the U.S. Copyright Office). I have the strong impression that Commons:Licensing#Interaction of United States copyright law and foreign copyright law is generally ignored. It's policy, but it's a dead letter. Question about derivative works... edit

Ok. I spend most of my time at the English Wikipedia - very little at Commons. Today over there I started re-tagging some images with a new fair-use template. These images are photographs and scans of cards from card games. Some of them show just the card - clearly a situation where the image should be tagged as fair use and not be on Commons. Others show a game in progress - a type of derivative work which (from my understanding) might be acceptable on Commons, but is iffy. Lots of these were previously tagged pd-self or some form of free-license, and many are here on Commons and not Wikipedia. What should I do about these? Here are the first three examples I found, and I'll make a complete list on my talk page here as I find them.

ONUnicorn 16:37, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. If they're not acceptable on Commons I can upload them to Wikipedia under a fair use claim. ONUnicorn 16:38, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

One cropped version more out of focus than the other: Why? edit

Why does one picture seem more out of focus than the other? Geotagging / GPS / Coordinates edit

Hello, i didnt find any information about Geotagging Images in Commons. I found this tool (Location Stamper) which makes it really easy to put Coordinates into the EXIF Information, it would be great if commons could use this information to generate a link to google maps or something.

Thanks for Info. --Torbenhenke 21:16, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Many commons images are geocoded via templates such as {{Location dec}}. I'd love to see a push to get more of our collection geocoded. The use of exif is perhaps non-ideal since it doesn't enable collaboration. What pages did you try looking on? We should make the geocoding instructions more obvious. Also, it doesn't appear that locationstamper is free software.. probably we should put this functionality into a tool like commonist. --Gmaxwell 21:42, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I used the search funktion for GPS and Geotagging and looked through the help and because i didnt know where to look, i tried the first steps.
Location Stamper isnt free (like in free speech) as much as i know (Microsoft), but if you use it standalone, you can download it for free (like in free beer) and it does what it is supposed to do. Its the only Geotagging tool i found. (Ok, there is Picasa, but that tried to scan all images on my HDD without asking me, so i deinstalled it without even looking at it).
Well, EXIF is the standard, isnt it. And it would make work easy, i put the data into the image once and it stays there. When i upload tagged images, this data could just be used. For collaboration: How about a bot, searching for Coordinates in EXIF an putting a template on the page? So anybody could edit the template to get more exact coords...
I myself think geotagging is the coolest thing since sliced bread. So i think a tutorial with all needed information would be great.
I just took a look into the templates for geocoding, most of them are not commented, the comment in Location dec US says it doesnt work. Its not easy for a noob to decide which template to use.--Torbenhenke 08:07, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There is a little javascript tool, which you can activate for your profile. Instructions here. It creates the propper template from a google-maps link. --Dschwen 10:09, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, thats nice, i have seen that. But
  • there is no central page in commons to get information about geotags
  • there is not much / no information about the geotemplates
  • i want to geotag my images for private use -> the geo information is avaible in the exif tags
I would like to see some kind of project page about geotagging in commons, with Howto and explanations and later on special tools or bots. I would help, but first i have to figure it out for myself--Torbenhenke 12:08, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I guess EXIF-based geocoding will come as soon as compcat cams with built-in GPS receivers flood the market. And thats only a matter of time. I don't agree about the it doesn't enable collaboration point. We don't complain about the inability to modify date and time stamps or exposure values in the EXIF, do we? If the pic was taken at a certain location, it just was. Whether the location the pic was taken from really is the crucial information is a whole other story. For that matter template based geocoding has its advantages (coordinates of the subject as opposed to those of the photographer). But thats just the icing on the cake. Automated geocoding will be way better than no geocoding. So far there is only Category:Commons:Geocoding. --Dschwen 12:47, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I do not disagree that having geocoding as a function of the camera would be great. However, thats not a matter that we control. So when we consider our options, we find that non-exif geocoding is something people can add and view via our software today, while exif based geocoding will currently require external software. So long as the data is captured, it doesn't much matter to me how. A few of my images have GPS data in the exif, but I've found that workflow wise it's easier to add it to the image page after the image is uploaded. In the past I've suggested to Brion that we modify the exif to reflect image page data, but there isn't yet a straightforward way to pull that off. --Gmaxwell 12:54, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

World homosexuality laws edit

I can't upload a changed version of World_homosexuality_laws.png as I am too new of a user. It was revealed in the English Wikipedia, and confirmed by a neutral party (me) that Canberra has not recognized civil unions. Someone is claiming "bias", while this is simply, the picture is wrong. Can someone please move the image World_homosexuality_laws_2007-02-16.png to World_homosexuality_laws.png? The only difference is the return of Canberra to not recognizing same-sex unions. --Puellanivis 02:51, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I came across the above image which is currently licenced under a CCBYSA-self licence. The image is a scan of a Norwegian driving licence and I would therefore suspect it comes under the copyright of the Norwegian government. I'm not sure what copyright the govt. of Norway use and whether the image should be changed to show fair use or public domain. Alexj2002 12:41, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

adding a category to an image edit

My problem is to add a category to an image. I have read: first upload, then add the category. Is that right?

I read "To add an image or page to category Foo, add the following link to the page (resp. the image's description): [[Category:Foo]]. This is a "magic" link, which will a) appear in the category box at the bottom of the page and b) cause the image to show up in the category."

I have used "CommonSense" to find a category. In first instance it gave no results, but now I (hope to) understand how it works. It may give for example the answer: [[Category:Buddhist temples]]. But for a botanic garden in Sri Lanka I found via garden: "Category:Gardens_of_Sri_Lanka". If I use that, should it be with or without underscores?

Where should I add the category information? Is that in the description? See my contribution on http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Image:Nibung_palm.jpg&diff=prev&oldid=4467740 Should I change Category:trees into:

Questions about PDF files edit

I have recently prepared a PDF of some long letters written by a French priest working in China during the early eighteenth century. It is intended that the letters should be accessed by a link in the Wikipedia article on Chinese porcelain (or from anywhere else, for that matter). Now, first of all, the question of copyright. The letters were translated into English and published in a book in 1906. At some time during the last five years the letters were then transcribed from the book and a copy placed on the web site of a magazine (Ceramics Today) but with errors and omissions (mainly, I think, caused by OCR problems). I have taken the text of the letters from the Ceramics Today web site and corrected it, using the 1906 book, and set the text as a PDF. I now wish to place this file somewhere accessible within the Wikipedia system, possibly on Wikimedia.

So the questions are: (1) would there be any copyright issues if I did this, and (2) is Wikimedia the best place to put the file?

Regards, Nick. N.Hopton 13:02, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If the book (from 1906) was published in the US it would be {{PD-US}}. If it was published outside the US it depends on when the translater died. The scan by Ceramics Today does not give them any copyright since it is no new work that has been created. You can upload a pdf file to Commons, you might also consider to add the text to Wikisource, as well. --Matt314 22:11, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Matt, thanks for the help. It looks as if I'll have to drop the idea, the book was published in England in 1906 but author (who was also the translator of the letters) didn't die until 1941. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to have been an American edition of the book either. It's a pity, this text is required reading for anyone interested in Chinese ceramics. Regards, Nick. N.Hopton 11:06, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Are the original sources in French available? In that case a Wikimedia might be willing to translate it to english. Also, this might be useful to m:wikisource. -- Bryan (talk to me) 11:30, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gosh, there's a thought. Yes, I have the letters in the original French, and there certainly wouldn't be any copyright issues with these. It would be quite a job though, but Burton's translation would be available as a guide (I think that all translators making a new translation look back to what their predecessors have done). Any ideas about where I go from here? Regards, Nick. N.Hopton 13:18, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you have the scanned in originals, Commons is a fine place. If it is a text document, wikisource:fr:Accueil might be a better place. -- Bryan (talk to me) 19:06, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Watermark removed edit

I uploaded Image:Wikipe-tan-in-seaside-cropped.png to replace Image:Wikipe-tan-in-seaside.png because my version doesn't have a watermark. I can't directly replace because my account is too new; anyone want to replace it for me? Veinor 14:25, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please move photo! edit

Please move thumb|150px|left to left|150px|thumb, for I have rotated the image in the former. Thanks! Kumar Appaiah 12:42, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Help edit

Can I post screenshots of a videogame? The preceding unsigned comment was added by Skippan (talk • contribs) at January 8, 2007 14:21 (UTC)

Only if the video game itself is licensed specifically under a free license as outlined in Commons:Licensing. Cary "Bastiqe" Bass demandez 15:00, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I believe Ubisoft allows screenshots to be licensed under a CC license. There should be a page *somewhere* in Commons explaining this. -- Bryan (talk to me) 16:00, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it is not CC, but see User:Avatar/Ubisoft. -- Bryan (talk to me) 16:01, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

*.svg-files edit

Hello,

I uploaded a *.svg-file as requested. Unfortunately, the file seems not to behave as it supposed to. There is no preview whatsoever - I experienced similar problems with other svg-files I created with Adobe Illustrator CS2. Is there a remedy or should I just continue to upload *.png-versions? The file in question is

sidonius 16:06, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In Adobe Illustrator you have to play with the export settings to make it as simple as possible, removing any embedment or superfluous code. You may even need to go into the svg with a text editor and fix it there too. Cary "Bastiqe" Bass demandez 17:06, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe if you read it in with Inkscape? ++Lar: t/c 21:12, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I could finally solve the problem. Due to a clue provided to me accidentially by another user, I found out that a *.tif-File in a hiden layer of my Illustrator-File caused the problem. Apparently, any file resp. any layer gets included into the svg as soon as a svg-File is exported by illustrator, whether you hide it or not. The only solution is to delete all the layers you don't need any more before the export. Figuring that out, I am now finally able to use svg-Files, because the never worked with me before.sidonius 20:08, 15 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image won't load in gallery edit

I uploaded ScoutFun.png and it you call up that page, it looks fine. I tried putting it in the Scouting gallery and it won't display (nor in any other gallery). If you call the thumbnail at http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/df/ScoutFun.png/120px-ScoutFun.png it won't come up but it will come up at 121px at http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/df/ScoutFun.png/121px-ScoutFun.png can anyone help? Rlevse 03:39, 9 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I purged the image, should be fine now. --Matt314 09:10, 9 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, Thanks much.Rlevse 10:50, 9 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have seen this problem at least twice when copying images from the English wikipedia to Wiki Commons. Look e.g. at Category:Mission,_British_Columbia. Today I first uploaded Image:FraserRiver.jpg -- which loaded fine, but its thumbnail apparently has not been generated properly and does not show in the category pages. So I ended up uploading the same file again, now as Image:FraserRiver-copy1.jpg, in which case the thumbnail finally showed up as it should be.
And this is not the first time I see this thumprint probloem. On Dec 21, the same thing happened with Image:HuiChineseMuslim2.jpg: its thumbrpint did not display in Category:Hui_people, so I ended up uploading it again as Image:HuiChineseMuslim2a.jpg. However, when I am looking at this category today (3 weeks after the original upload), the thumbprints for both are displayed -- so the problem is perhaps due to some caching issue. Vmenkov 19:24, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And by today, Image:FraserRiver.jpg finally has a good thumbnail image in the category's gallery. So this looks like some kind of caching problem. Vmenkov 10:15, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sathya Sai Baba edit

Sathya Sai Baba is the devine incarnation on earth. His meracles are simalar to Jesus's. He did NOT commit the negative acts that were posted on the Sai Baba Wiki link and this site needs accurate information and not lies of someones thought. This sit is for information and is a reference, there shouldent be rumors or wrong information but faqs. I know it is very difficult to monituer all of the links tht come in, but I would personally thank you if you would take this information off the wiki. If someone wants to know gossip and lies they can go to other non-accurate sites, but I truly like this site and I would hate to see it abused like it has. Thank You so much and I hope you correct the link and take away the missunderstandings with Sathya Sai Baba. Thank You and God Bless You! :)

Manuscript licensing edit

Hi. I would like to upload an image of few lines of text from the Kaufmann Manuscript, which is considered to be the most important manuscript of the Jewish Mishna. The manuscript is dated approx. 12th century, so for sure it is PD-old. However, its online digital version in the Jewish National Library (one page for example) is marked as copyrighted for the Library of Hungarian Academy of Sciences (that is where this Manuscript physically resides). Can I ignore that and upload that image as PD-old or PD-art? Netan'el 06:28, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Scanning does not involve any creativity, and should thus not renew copyright. I would say that {{PD-old}} is appropriate. -- Bryan (talk to me) 14:09, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Netan'el 18:51, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Using images edit

Hello. I have read through the help files on usage of images. I am still unclear about how to use an image on another website (non-commercial).

I understand that the image is free to use, however I cannot find a clear description on how to credit the image. The image in mind is http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Pogled_kum_ezerata_ot_biloto.JPG.

Do I need to add a credit to the image stating both the author and wikimedia? And how do you want it to look? i.e.: wikimedia/Ivelin Minkov

Also, this particular image is marked GFDL. In the secion Commons:Reusing content outside wikimedia it states that 5 authors need to be credited and a copy of the GFDL must be included. Does this apply to images as well?

thank you

You need to credit the authors. If you use an image under the terms of the GFDL you must add a link to the GFDL source text. Wikimedia does not need to be credited, however a link to the image description page would be appreciated. -- Bryan (talk to me) 13:24, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
File:Deklaracija o hrvatskome jeziku.jpg

As an illustration for wikisource:de:Deklaration über die Bezeichnung und Stellung der kroatischen Schriftsprache and wikisource:hr:Deklaracija o nazivu i položaju hrvatskog književnog jezika I scanned the "cover page" of this important historical document, which happens to be the only page of this short declaration. The declaration was signed by eighteen cultural and scholarly organizations of the Yugoslav Republic of Croatia and was published by a newspaper that does not exist any more in 1967.
I have asked the Institute for Croatian Language and Linguistics in Zagreb, who have published the text of the declaration on their homepage, for permission, but so far received no answer.
Can we use this image? In principle, I could also imagine that if we should not be allowed to use the full-size image, I might upload a small image instead where the text itself is not readable – after all, it is just meant for illustration.
--Daniel Bunčić (de wiki · talk · contrib.) 11:29, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. I have just seen that scans from newspapers don't seem to be a big problem, since there is even a Category:Newspapers. This makes me quite optimistic. So: Is there a problem at all with my file? Or can I just select a free license? --Daniel Bunčić (de wiki · talk · contrib.) 13:58, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Generally speaking the image would be still copyrighted and not be allowed on Commons. However, since it was published by a newspaper that doesn't exist anymore, could it be that the copyright expires? I do not have the necessary knowledge about copyright law, so I cannot answer this question. -- Bryan (talk to me) 14:07, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Just as the physical property of a company doesn't simply vanish when it goes out of business, neither does it's "intellectual property". Normally, someone still owns it. --Davepape 15:48, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I understand that. But I can't imagine that the people who uploaded, for example, the following pictures ...

... to show but a few, all asked the editing board for permission – at least it's not indicated that way, the license is always PD-self.
Okay, maybe I just shouldn't have asked, looked up earlier what others have done and then just uploaded the file as PD-self and that's it...?
--Daniel Bunčić (de wiki · talk · contrib.) 19:25, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Most of these should probably be deleted - if a major part of the artticle text is readable, the definitely must go. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 23:16, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much. So I have now requested deletion of the image myself. Instead I have uploaded a smaller version which is just illustrative and nothing more.
Thank you again for your help! --Daniel Bunčić (de wiki · talk · contrib.) 09:57, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

{{The NOT image gallery}} Is it suitable for Commons? edit

I made {{The NOT image gallery}}-Temlate. But now I'm doubting about them. Is it suitable for Commons or not? There are many intresting images in this gallery.--Alex Spade 14:08, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Commons talk:Licensing is more appropriate place for such discussions. I'll more question there.

Help with picture edit

Hello, I have had license problems when uploading a picture. The picture Im trying to download comes from this source:

http://www.laacademia.tv/5tageneracion/galerias/concierto3/img/10.jpg

The 2 or 3 times that I have uploaded it, it has been erased by the administrators, and I have been blocked one week because of my ignorance.

When I upload the picture, I put the source, and the Copyright, and the correspondign license but I guess Im doing something wrong because it has been erased over and over again. Which is the correct way to upload this?

Thanks for your help

Please read Commons:Licensing carefully. You can't upload on Commons images which have usage restrictions. --EugeneZelenko 16:04, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image strangely vanished edit

Hi, I recently uploaded and image: Shadow_Hand_Bulb.jpg. It was deleted soon after, but, when the permissions were sorted out, it was restored. However, now it has strangely vanished! Its page is still there. And when I tried to re-upload it, the Wiki Commons said that it already exists, and showed me the original image. What's going on? Scan of sheet music/cover edit

Ok, I wish to upload a scan made of the cover page of some sheet music. The sheet music contains one song, copyrighted 1942. The sheet music was published the same year. The publication country was the UK. The scan appears on a website currently; I have contacted the maker of the scan and obtained his permission to upload it to wikipedia. So far as I can tell this would be fair use. My first question is, is that correct?

And secondly, at what point would the scan be eligible for uploading to the Commons? It looks like the modding here is guided by the most restrictive copyright terms in whichever jurisdiction wikipedia may be published. Is there an agreed such jurisdiction, one whose rules we can readily refer to? Hakluyt bean 21:49, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
