Image:Potturinn.jpeg is not a well but a spring ; but this picture can't be moved to another category as it is used in the "Commons:Village_pump" page - you have to used another picture to illustrate your page and unblock or classify yourself this picture ! Many thanks for your help

Claiming my images

There are a number of images I created and uploaded to the en-Wikipedia, which have been uploaded here via a circuitous route and have lost my attribution as the author. For instance, Image:Lens1.svg is mine, but appears to have been uploaded from a copy at zh-Wikipedia without my name attached to the license info. I only noticed this after the image was deleted from en-WP as an exact copy of the commons file, thus losing my attribution completely. Do I just go ahead and change all the tags on these images to the correct author (me), or is there some process I must follow? --DrBob 18:32, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

Are you sure that it isn't Image:Lens1.png which is your image? This (non svg version) is correctly credited to you. I've also added a comment on the svg version based on the information in the upload log. /Lokal_Profil 19:37, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
Yep, I created both the PNG version, and (much later), the SVG version of the image. Note for instance that Image:Lens1b.svg correctly shows me as the author. --DrBob 19:46, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

Photograph of a book cover

I uploaded my photograph of Chairman Mao's Little Red Book to Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:LittleRedBook.jpg I'd like to put it on Wikimedia so other projects can have access to it, but I'm not sure if it's appropriate, or what category to use. To be more precise, "Specifically, the following are generally not allowed: Scans or reproductive photographs of copyrighted artwork, especially book covers, album/CD covers, etc" http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Licensing#Acceptable_licenses

A lot of people don't realize that a scan of someone else's work doesn't give them rights to it. Copyright in China is life + 50 years, so yes, this scan can only be used under a claim of fair use.Rlevse 22:37, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

add licence after upload

I loaded 3 pictures and forgott to add the licence. I scanned all of the myself and one is so old it is expired anyway. How do I add the licence now without loading the image again? The images are Bojare_Orscha.jpg (scanned myself -> free), Fjodor_R_Osten-Sacken.jpg (expired->free), Jurij A Treguboff10.jpg (scanned myself->free)--sabisteb 12:56, 5 December 2007 (CET)

The full list of copyright tags can be found here. Images for which the copyright has expired can be tagged with {{PD-old}}, and for images you created yourself, choose a free licence from the above link, for instance {{self|CC-BY-2.0}} or {{self|GFDL}}, and add it to the image page. Creative Commons License picture request overview

Image:PrinceEdwardIsland.jpg is from a website which uploaded images to the WWW via the Creative Commons License 3.0. There are also other historical maps online here. Is this upload OK? There is a map needed for the new provincial wikiproject. The map has been cropped from a larger image on the aforementioned website. Unfortunately, no. Those images are released under BY-NC-SA 2.0, which doesn't allow commercial use. All images uploaded to Commons can not have this restriction. (BTW, I didn't see where it said CC 3.0) -Rocket000 14:11, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
But as the maps are from the late 19th century, maybe there's a chance that they are already in the public domain (further information about the creator of the maps is needed to find out). --88.134.141.133 14:34, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
Anything before 1923 is PD, but not necessarily their derivatives, so you got to be careful in situations like this. Rocket000 15:02, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
To expand on that. If the images are simply digital reproductions of PD work, then they are also PD because they lack originality. The website can not claim any copyright status. For more details on this check out Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp.. I'm not familiar with the originals so there may be a reason why the website claims the rights. Help tagging a photo

Hi, My friend uploaded this photo: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Jim_Carroll%2C_Author.jpg He had technical difficulties and asked me to finish setting it up for him. It appears he already has the information, as shown in the log, but it's not showing up where it's supposed to. There is also a notation that the photo will be deleted if the copyright info isn't set up.

I have NO idea how to do this stuff. Can someone help me?

Some information missing?

Hello, I've just uploaded two photos ftom the Esperanto Wikipedia, This and This one. Some robot sent me a message that something is not OK with these images - "Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information." - but I think this is already written there. Additionally, another WikiMedia project cannot be the source. In this case, I've assumed that the original uploader, Petr Tomasovsky, was also the photographer, and have modified the tagging accordingly. I uploaded a cleaner version of HP48G.jpg (ie: downloaded, used GIMP to clean up some of the rough edges), but my account is too new to replace it (MatthewMastracci on Wikipedia.org, but I just signed up for commons today):

Delegating the photo upload process. What else must I do?

A photographer contributed the following this photo for a wikipedia page about a rock musician. He granted authorization to license it under CC-By-SA. The author asked me to do all the upload on his behalf.

Could you tell me if I'm all done or if I should forward his authorization mail to the common mailing list? He didn't use any of the templates; he just wrote the small phrase I quoted in the permissions field.

Language help

Could someone identify the language used here, if any? It looks like Polish to me (Google search + the fact that the IP is from Warsaw), but it is written without any spaces, so no translator can tell me what it says there. --Boricuæddie 15:49, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

How to find Tennessee photographers on Commons?

Is there any easy way to find photogs on Commons by geographical location? I have press access to a fairly major, national-level band's final show, which is in the state. -- Zanimum 21:44, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

Problem moving image to commons

Image:Breakdance-oldschool.png

The above image was deleted for not having source information. I find this odd because the logo has been used for the Hip hop WikiProject in Wikipedia for a long time and all of a sudden, it's deleted. Perhaps the souce info was removed and subsequently deleted? The PNG is just a smaller version of Image:Breakdance oldschool.jpg. I would presume that "jnl" is User:Jean-no, who uploaded that JPG. (Jean has uploaded other photos he has taken with file names ending in "jnl", for instance Image:Rouen palais des congres jnl 3.jpg, where he has given his full name, and it indeed gives the initials "jnl".) Could someone ask him over at fr:Discussion Utilisateur:Jean-no whether he did draw this himself, please? If so, change the tagging to {{self|FAL}} and restore the PNG. I sent a message to fr:Discussion Utilisateur:Jean-no using my IP. He replied on my talk page on the English Wikipedia using his IP. He apparently doesn't like the image and prefers graffiti. But isn't it acceptable for User:Shizhao to re-upload an image that User:Jean-no made under a different file format? I thought this was all under copyleft licenses. Of course it is. It was just deleted because of the somewhat difficult to untangle sourcing. I've restored it now and added all the information that's needed. Whether you want to use that image or some other image in the user box at en-WP is up to you. Lupo 17:24, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Does Commons have the equivalent of w:WP:RFC? And if not, what is the appropriate forum for large-ish discussions of complicated issues (for example, issues affecting several hundred images)? The Village Pump? Dragons flight 07:22, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

If it's categories, use Commons:Categories for discussion. If it's licensing, use Commons talk:Licensing. Otherwise usually Village pump. If you suspect it will be a big or important discussion it might be smart to use a subpage from the start. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 08:21, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

NASAA image is legitimate

We are editing our wiki page and have received a notice from "tomia" that our image is in copyright violoation. This is not the case. How do we remove the message saying that our logo will be removed from the NASAA wiki page?

Same name for different files in wikipedia and commons

I uploaded a image Theyyam.jpg to commons, but I could not add the same to a wikipedia article because another file with the same name existed there. I believed such a scenerio never happens. Is this a bug? Any way to solve it other than re-uploading the image under different name? These are the images I'm talking about:

It's not as unusual as one might think. One solution is to upload the local image to Commons under a differnet name (assuming it's under a free license)./Lokal_Profil 22:40, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
You should upload to commons with a different name, then tag the old one with {{Badname}}. In cases where the EnWP and commons image are the same (not in this case), the EnWP version can be tagged with {{subst:ncd}}, and it will be deleted (this shouldn't happen here as they aren't the same). So yeah, re-upload, and then tag the old one for deletion with badname. — Giggy 22:46, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I'm afraid {{Derivative}} works are subject to speedy deletion. Many times this issue is missed on the various wikipedias, and only gets caught when images are moved here. Dear Davepape,

I was a little discontent at first. Now I know that original upload (on the Japanese Wikipedia) was the image that was licensed inadequately which makes my upload subject to CSD. Earlier, I mistook the matter and thought that by derivative owrk, Commons bureaucrats meant my derivation from the image on the japanese Wikipedia. Since the image was already tagged as GFDL, I thought the CSD was unjustified.

Thank you very much, Davepape for your kind understanding. I don't know if I could do that if someone re uploaded an image that was speedily deleted. Thank you also for not blocking me.

I assure it was purely ignorance that was the cause of my action an I had no malice in my mind.

When I looked at Image:2006_0602TurdaPotaissaCastrumMap0081.jpg, I thought the image might have a copyright problem. I don't want to nominate it for deletion straight away, but I'd like to report it somewhere so people with more experience with copyright issues can have a look at it. I've tagged the language of the description. It now reads "{{de|Die Offenbarung Johannis}}". (Also, I'm not a commons expert, but I believe the book you scanned it from should be mentioned in the source part. Dear experts, is that correct?) -- Ddxc 21:41, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
Yup, that's correct. Initially, the image was missing a license tag, too. And yes, this is not your "own work". Of course you scanned it, but a scan is not a "work". You could mention something like "Scanned by uploader from Bousset, W: Die Offenbarung Johannis, Göttigen, Germany, 1906." I've updated the image pages accordingly. Furthermore, since you're apparently going to upload the whole work, I've created Category:Die Offenbarung Johannis and also Category:Wilhelm Bousset, and also Creator:Wilhelm Bousset. Take a look at Image:Bousset-S010.png how the image description page could look like. Also note that there appears to be a problem with Image:Bousset-S004.png, I only see a transparent PNG, but no text. Lupo 22:23, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

I suppose you're right. Open a deletion request, that's where we generally discuss such things. (Despite the name, our deletion requests are simply discussions where people present arguments why a particular image was or was not suitable for hosting here. Voting, i.e., saying "keep" or "delete" without presenting a reason, is strongly discouraged and should in any case be disregarded when the discussion is closed.) Lupo 14:16, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Image display problem

Now that's strange. This is what I see on the page, and the image is not displayed on the wikipedia pages that use the image either. But I can see the image fine if I click "image" near the top of the page. In IE it displays fine everywhere. Sakkura 22:36, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Yep, just did that again to make sure. A correction to the above, I only get to see the image if I click on the image name where the picture would normally be. I guess that is equivalent to clicking the image itself, where you are sent to the page with the full-size raw image. Sakkura 23:53, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

I've had problems similar to this and the only thing that fixed it was uploading the image with a slightly different name. My theory is that sometimes the initial upload did not work 100% correctly. — Rlevse • Talk • 02:08, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

SVG saves as PNG

Right-click on the link "BSA_Region_Map.svg‎" underneath the image and select "save link as". Alternatively left click the link and then right click on the image which appears and select "save page as". /Lokal_Profil 17:44, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

It's animated, and if you watch long enough you should see it move. It's just very slow, since the timestep was choosen for asteroids with much faster speeds. WilyD 14:39, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Personality rights

Hi! Is there a guideline that describes how personality rights limit what can be used how on the Wikipedias?

Here's an example that I'm unsure about: Image:Blond little girl.jpg depicts an identifyable and presumably living person.

  1. It is shown, for instance, in its Commons categories and on wikt:blond (both U.S. jurisdiction?) and de:Blond (German jurisdiction). Would or could those two violate the personality rights of the child? Could the Wikimedia Foundation get into trouble for it, similar to copyright violations?
  2. It is also used on de:Vernachlässigung (engl. "neglect"). Is that one of the cases where the image should just be removed from the article? -- Ddxc 04:57, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

Presidential election campaign poster= public domain?

Categorizing confusion

I am confused about the double categories of animals and plants. For example, there is one category:sheep and one category: Ovis aries. What are the guidlines for categorizing sheep pictures in these two categories? In which category should subcategories with domestic sheep breeds (such as category:leicester (sheep) be)? Well, these redundant categories are an unfortunate result of not being able to completely redirect categories like we can with galleries. We don't really have a clear guideline on this yet, but generally all pictures of organisms should at least be categorized by the scientific Latin name. (See also: Commons:WikiProject Tree of Life#Categories). When I categorize plants and animals I normally only use the scientific name (species or genus name, if I can tell) unless it's a generalized illustration, but it's really up to you if you want to categorize by the common name too. Ok to modify this photo?

I have this photo from Flickr. It has this license which says: "Attribution-No Derivative Works 2.0 Generic", so I cant crop this photo and upload it here or can I? Its too big to upload on its own. What do you suggest I do? I could email the guy who took it and ask him to upload the cropped one under the same or better license. Any suggestions? --Matt57 02:03, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

  • See Commons:Licensing. Commons does not accept licenses that prohibit derivative works, so the image is not welcome here under the current license in any case. (As an aside, technical changes such as cropping or changing resolution or size are not usually considered making derivatives). 1964 New York World's Fair

There is a Category called "1964 New York World's Fair" which I uploaded many picture to in the past. I realize now however that perhaps I made a mistake with adding a page called "1964 New York World's Fair" which is a duplicate of what is already in the Category. Instead of deleting, consider a #REDIRECT [[:Category:better name here]] on the page (and don't forget the ':' so the wiki software will redirect to the new category, not simply 'file' this page. To 'move' the images from one category to another is as simple as changing the name of the category they appear in. Once moved, if you notice that there are duplicate images, choose the best image of the duplicates based on size, clarity, name and other criteria that I can't think of right now and mark the least desirable duplicates with the {{duplicate|Image:name of the image that is going to be kept.jpg}} and soon, something will be done about the duplicates. -- carol 03:07, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

what for?

Could someone explain to me what these images are for? Isn't (most of) that exactly what foreign scripts are for: displaying text in other than Latin script without having to use images? The images look like kind of a waste of server space to me: Most, if not all, of the scripts are visible with virtually every browser and installation of any standard scripts. As far as I can make out User:Nyo vandalized this image and this one.

When you see vandalism, you can report it at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/Vandalism. In this case, there is a possibility that User:Nyo just has different statistics, so you can just revert and explain to them why they are wrong. If User:Nyo keeps reverting the image, and you believe he does so in good faith, you can ask for help at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems.
