Help required to correct a typing error

A few moments ago, I uploaded a reproduction of Robert Browning's letter to Elizabeth Barrett dated 10 September 1846. In the French version of the caption, I made a typing error: I wrote "Wellesby College" instead of ""Wellesley College"". Would someone more experienced than I am kindly correct my mistake? automated categorization

Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia, just enlarge the image by clicking on it and save it... Please follow the instructions of the licenses, nearly all images requires attribution of their authors, some licenses requires a publication under the same license and a backlink to the source, the GFDL requires a publication of the version history and a local copy of the license text. --Martin H. How to delete my upload?

You probably refer to you upload File:Katy Steele Live Townsville Australia 2009.JPG. First: blanking a page does not delete anything, it is still visible in the version history. You published your photo under a free license, this is not revocable. Also the person is inside our scope, w:en:Katy Steele, so I dont see a reason to delete it. --Martin H. Need help adding category

Good morning Sirs: I have added severaL pictures of the Armenian city Gyumri related with George Gurdjieff. I would like to include them in Gurdjieff article. Today I received a notice from BotMultichillT saying that I have to add a category to my pictures. Can I put the category "Gurdjieff" sonce it is my intention to transfer these pictures under that chapter in Spanish? For instance, now my pictures say:

I could add the category as follows:

Dear Jorge Sanchez! You can add the desired categories by adding this text at the bottom of the file page:
[[Category:Gyumri]]
[[Category:G. I. Gurdjieff]]
Images should have more than one category if relevant. In this case the first category tells where the pictures are taken (the city) and the next that it is places related to Gurdjieff. It would be a good idea to add a English text if possible because you can't see from the pictures why they are related to Gurdjieff.
As I said I do not speak Spanish, but images could also be categorized in "[[Category:Churches]]" and "[[Category:Buildings in Armenia]]" or whatever the picture shows.

Deleting, re-uploading, renaming?

Hello, being new to Wiki commons, I overlooked the intro where "usefulness" of file names is recommended.

I have uploaded "Nakho-Dagestanian Family Tree.png" which should replace the now duplicate "NaDaTree.png". But I cannot delete the latter in any way.

I would like to do the same with "ECTree.png", which should be renamed to "Northeast Caucasian Family Tree.png", and with "CauClass.jpg", which should be renamed to "Northeast Caucasian Classifications Compared.jpg"

In the future, it would be good if we could rename files in a more straightforward way.

  • It's nice if filenames can be descriptive, but the most important thing is to have a nice description= field in the {{Information}} template on an image page. I wouldn't worry about renaming the files, as long as the descriptions are informative.
  • Your logs show that you made your account on 16:50, 30 April 2009. That means you are about to become autoconfirmed, whereupon you will be able to upload new versions over existing images.
  • If you want to mark an image as an obsolete or superseded duplicate of another image, you can use the {{Obsolete}} or {{Superseded}} template.
  • Bug #709 – the developers have written code to allow editors to rename/move images and other media files. Non-administrators cannot access this feature on Wikimedia Commons yet. See Commons:FAQ#How can I rename/move an image or other media file?

Image Issues

When trying to generate a thumbnail the following error occurs:

This usually happens when there is an embedded image in the document. Is there a PNG image in the file that was left accidentally? If so, removing it might fix the problem. -- Editor at Large • talk 03:02, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

How do I request the restoration of a deleted file?

Two months ago, I uploaded a file from Flickr (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mia_Couto.jpg), whose author I contacted. Some time later, he sent the authorization-mail to WikiCommons. However, my file was deleted 14 days after the upload. How can I know if the permission has arrived and, if so, how can I restore the file?

How can a subcategory get moved?

Hello, I'm kind of new to Wikipedia. Even so, I boldly created a new Commons Category named "Timber framing in the United States." Then I placed this Category within the Category "Timber framing by country," making it a subcategory. But within that Category, it's alphabetized under the letter T (Timber...) rather than U (United...). All the other subcategories (for example, "Timber framing in the United Kingdom") are alphabetized by country name, even though they all begin with the words "Timber framing in ...." You can add a sortkey after the category, so by changing [[Category:Timber framing by country]] to [[Category:Timber framing by country|United States]] it would list it in that category under U. See also meta:Help:Category#Sort key Nanonic (talk) 00:41, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Mass Delete help

I need to delete a number of images from here, The topic for this can be found here http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/Mass_deletion_request , but the main link there is dead - Commons:Deletion requests/Images of XYZ - so I need help to figure out how to go about deleting some maps which have been determined to be bad. I have lots of evidence and proof from the english section of wikipedia... there has been a lenghty discussion. So, could someone please help me get about deleting the improper things? The link is not a main link or a link to any helppage. Every deletion request has a subpage: Commons:Deletion requests/Subpagename, the red link is an example. Please select the name of your subpage and put
{{delete|reason=Your detailed reason|subpage=Subpagename|year=2009|month=May|day=6}}
on every image you want to add to your request, this can be done by copy&paste. A red link to the subpage Commons:Deletion requests/Subpagename appears inside the red box, please follow the instructions inside the template:
  • Create the subpage by c&p the {{delete2..... to it. Provide a list of images on the subpage, so that other people can see whath this is about
  • Inform the uploaders.

Changing categories

How do I change category titles on Wiki-Commons images? When uploading images, I've been identifying categories like "Category:Images of Oregon"...I just found out that system adds "Catagory:" to font-ent of text so everything I've uploaded went to non-existant categories as "Category:Category:Images of Oregon". I have been trying to figure out how to edit category text, but I can't figure it out and am very frustrated. Can someone tell me how to edit category text?--Orygun (talk) 01:05, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi Orygun, just go to your image, e.g. File:Riddle Ranch, Mortar Riddle Site 01.jpg, click the edit button at the top of the page and remove one Category: for every category you selected with this upload. Yes, you are right. I cant give you the exact answer maybe: The structure of Commons is, to categorize images as specified as possible. An fictional example might be: We have images of buildings and we have images of red collor. Red buildings are categorized to both categories. If the number of images of red buildings turns bigger and bigger someone will put them to a category with red buildings which is a subcategory of buildings and this red collored things. Commons is working with category intersection. In extrem we can have a category "red buildings in Alaska in summer" which is a subcategory of red buildings by state in summer, buildings in summer and buildings in Alaska.... So it works, categorize by topic and select the most specific topic you find. In case Category:Oregon dont have a own category yet go back to the US category. See COM:EIC#Cat for more information about categories on Commons. Note that categories cannot solve every problem of finding and grouping files. This is why you should also type the most complete file descriptions that you can, to increase the chances that someone can find your files with the search feature. In general, a person's success at finding images will increase with their familiarity of the categories on Commons, as well as the search tools. But of course not all files are in all the categories they should be in yet. You can help by filling in the obviously missing categories, like I did here. For example, I was looking for images relating to Wind power, and I found some uncategorized or partly categorized images on Commons, and some on the English Wikipedia. So I moved a few dozen images to Commons, and I made a few dozen new categories, following the structure of the existing partially-completed categories that other users had made earlier. Don't be surprised if you find a similar lack of already-complete categorization in other areas of Commons. Many subjects could have category divisions by country or state or some other natural division, but only some of the subcategories may exist yet, because only users with the corresponding interests have edited those categories. You can see that Commons is a work in progress, so dive in and we will all push together. When you edit the categories for a particular U.S. state, have a look first at the states with large population, such as California, New York, etc. Their category structures may be more complete, and you can use them as a guide for filling out the subcategories for a state with less population and representation on Commons. --Teratornis (talk) 21:17, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Image files

I have uploaded some images and gotten a notice that they are uncategorized. I have endeavored to categorize most of them. However, I noticed that each image file had the line that the image is not linked to any file. That is nonsense in that the only reason I have uploaded these files was to put them into a wikipedia article, which I did. I.e., each is linked to a file. The section "File links" only shows the usage of the image on Commons itself. It does not currently show where the file is used in the various Wikipedias. To see where it is used, there is a link "check usage" at the top of the image page. --rimshottalk 20:43, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

Larger picture available

Good morning. File:Macropus robustus.jpg is avalaible here on Flickr in a larger version. Can I simply upload the larger image withe the same name instead of the smaller one? I think it good idea to overwrite existing image with better resolution. But if you account is not old enough you may be prevented from doing this. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:47, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
Already done. As the license on Flickr is still a free license counting for every size it is no problem, I wouldnt have done the reupload if the license where changed to an unfree license. However, a lot of people dont find the largest size on Flickr, the Upload bot and some users have to do this replacement for thousend of images. Seems like Flickr is not intuitive enough for many users (or users dont read any guidlines). --Martin H. (talk) 18:09, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

Corrupt gif crashing browser

Hello, the following file: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bradbury_Building7.gif

Seems to be a HUGE gif (800k) which is also corrupt. I can't get at the page to edit it at all as it crashes my browser. It also causes the Wikipedia page on the Bradbury Building to crash my browser. As I don't have an account on the commons, nor can I even look at the page, would some kind soul take the time to revert the HUGE gif back to the previous smaller version. The GIF doesn't seem corrupt, it's just huge. I've reverted it for the time being so that the article stays readable; unfortunately you probably still can't visit the file description page, since the huge version is shown in the file history in all its 72.9 Mpx glory. CC-SA: Hole magazine or just the page where I use the photo under CC-SA-license

Hello,

I would like to use a CC-SA-licensed photo (a car) in a commercial magazine. Regarding the fact that I have "to make my version available under CC-BY-SA", does this mean, that a) the whole magazine, b) the page that contains the photo or c) only "my version" of the photo must be made available under CC-BY-SA.

I am sorry if this question is answered somewhere. I'm not used to wikis and felt a little bit overwhelmed when looking for the answer.

...which doesn't actually answer the question. Note, however, that Wikimedia itself relies heavily on the interpretation that using a picture to illustrate an article only counts as aggregation and not the creation of a derivative work — if it did, we could not legally use CC-BY-SA pictures to illustrate GFDL articles, or vice versa. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 19:39, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
In short: You can use the cc-by-sa image in a proprietary magazine, but you must fullfill the license: Attribution to the author and indication of the license of the image. Something like

Ticket question

here is a question, I have a ticket from the last performance at a theater in the United States that has a wikipedia page. The theater is now closed and I would like to upload a scan of this ticket to include on the page. Is this legaly ok? what do I put down for the license? is Fair use ok in this instance? It's probably not suitable for Commons, unless perhaps it would qualify as {{PD-ineligible}}. However, you could probably upload it to Wikipedia with a fair use claim and rationale. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 23:21, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
To clarify, to be ineligible for copyright it must consist of only text and simple geometric shapes. It cannot show any copyrighted logos. Alternatively, if it is an old ticket (from before 1924) the copyright may be expired. How old is the ticket? --Yarnalgo (talk) 00:26, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

The image I uploaded is for deletion

Hi,

I have recently uploaded an image of Thakore Whagji bawa, and on the page it is marked for deletion. This image or photograph has been passed over from my forefathers and does not really have any copyright. As with most royalties in india, you could possibly find lots of images or pictures that just happen to be in your possession, the image in question is more than 70 years old.

could you please suggest what tags I should put so that the image is not deleted.

Hi Khengar, you are on the wrong project here, your upload is wikipedia:en:File:Whagji bawa.JPG - thats the english Wikipedia, this is Wikimedia Commons. However we are specialised on files, so we can hopefuly help you. But thats not so easy: You did not provide any source. So the first step to determine the license is:
  • Name your source
  • Who is the auhtor (photographer or painter) and what was his year of birth and death? In case the author is unknown: which efforts did you do to research the author
  • At which date and where was the image first published
Without this informations the image can not be kept here or on Wikipedia, determining the image is {{PD-old}} or {{PD-India}} without knowing the author or his lifetime is impossible. --Martin H. (talk) 13:16, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

reupload will be activated after 3 (or 4?) days for a new account. Then you can use the link at the image description page, Upload a new version of this file. Only reupload modified versions of this image - in this case some restoration and a little rotation ccw. Commons error?

Hello. I was trying to upload a new version of my photo on the Commons, but every time I do this, the photo I get is the older one, not the new I want to upload. When I uploaded even more versions, it showed out, that the older versions are now OK, but they were not, when I uploaded them. I don't know what to do.

This has happened to me before. What is happening is that your browser has stored an image of the page in its memory, and has not updated it. From the looks of the page it should be okay. Given the text in the FAQ ("All these images are licensed under under the conditions of attribution and noncommercial use as described by the Creative Commons License. About CC licensing

Creative Commons licenses are non-revocable, and many Flickr users will change their licensing from CC to, say, all rights reserved. So if some images from flickr are tagged with cc licenses but haven't been reviewed, how are we able to confirm that it has ever been licensed under CC-by or CC-sa if the author changes the license on Flickr? --Ben.MQ (talk) 09:59, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Die niedrige Auflösung zeigt immer noch das alte Bild, während die hohe Auflösung das korrigierte Bild anzeigt. Die Hilfe zum Verbessern von Bildern, bringt mich nicht wirklich weiter. Du hast nichts falsch gemacht. Es kann schon mal eine Weile dauern, bis die kleineren Bilder generiert werden. Grundsätzlich scheint es mit dem Bild kein Problem zu geben, auf Rottweiler zum Beispiel geht es. --rimshottalk 18:13, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Ok, I asked Giggy about this a few months ago and he said that there was no problem, but the question has been brought up again. See Wikipedia:Using the Wayback Machine. forgotten password

Hello,

My username is Kilnburn and i have forgotten my password to be able to log on to wikipedia commons. As a result, i had an e-mail sent out for a temporary password. I have tried many times to log in with this temporary password, but with no luck and i don't understand why. Album Covers, Etc...

Hi,

I'm definitely 'new' and have some standard/simple discography updates for a few artists I'd love to post/create. It seems I've read in a number of places that it is perfectly fine to use album art for these pages. Correct? Curious about catologue numbers, record labels.... are there any that anyone knows of which are copyrighted in such a way that they shouldn't be indicated on a Wikipedia page. There sure seems to be a lot of other pages with artists' albums, singles, etc., I just want to be sure.

New version png File as svg

Hi, there are a lot of png files in Category: New Zealand state highway shields, which do not conform to the design rules of Transport New Zealand authority (other fonts, wrong font sizes...), most signs are still missing. So i want to re-upload correct signs als svg files. As I see, this can be done only as a new file, not as a new version. The old *.png will be obsolete then and should be deleted. Is there any possibility to find out, which other wikipedias use this old *.png? Are there any possibilities to change the file name in all articles in all wikipedia by bot ? There is a bot to replace images on all wikipedias: Commons delinker. Unfortunately, "To avoid World War III, if the new image is svg and the original is not, CommonsDelinker will ignore the command.". What to do with duplicate images

While moseying around on Wikipedia, I found two duplicate Commons files. File:Abraham-Lincoln-battlegroup.jpg and File:Rimpac battlegroup.jpg are the same image, by the same photographer, with the only differences being that the second image has a much smaller maximum resolution, and that the first is tagged {{PD-USGov-Military-Navy}}, while the second is the more general {{PD-USGov}}.

Is a Screenshot of a website considered to be in the public domain?

Since I took the screenshot, and since the website is publicly available, does this mean that a screenshot of a site may be licensed into the public domain?

Not 100%: I would provide two printed papers with the shirt:
  • Paper one: Source and author, source on Commons (weblink), version history, short information about GFDL and Commons
  • Paper two: license text.

Because the "File links" shown on Commons, only reflect hyperlinks on other Common pages, as en:File:The_Abbey_Public_House.JPG will only reflect the usage on en-Wikipedia (please note that the file is linked there). Image creation dates

Hello, I'd like to start uploading images to Commons but I have a question. I have a picture that I took in July 2008 but after editing in iPhoto and copying it to another folder, the file now has an August 2008 date. Should I use the original date (i.e. when I took the photo) or the latest date for the "image creation date" field of the upload form? Does it even matter? Thank you. user name confusion

My user name on wikipedia is Sphilbrick, but my user page here says SPhilbrick. Probably my error, but I don't know how to fix it. Should I create new user page and delete the other one? You can put a {{Bad name}} template on the page you want to delete. Put the correct name as the first parameter, like this:
{{Bad name|Sphilbrick}}

Photos of Henri Temianka

Hello Help-people, I've written an article on my father, Henri Temianka, which is now on Wikipedia. I have several old photographs of him -- c. 1932 and 1986 -- as well as others of him with his Paganini Quartet and other famous musicians, and would naturally like to include them in my article. The 1986 photo was by one David Kovar. I have attempted, without success, to locate him. I have no idea who might have produced the 1932 photo. The others were used in connection with my father's professional activities; as the executor of his estate and owner of his effects, to the best of my knowledge it is within my authority to re-use these photos. Would greatly appreciate your assistance in this matter. Yours,

See the links under COM:EIC#Copyright for the rather mind-numbingly complex documentation. For example, Help:Public domain explains that unpublished works revert to the public domain some number of years after the creator's death (usually 50 or 70 years, depending on jurisdiction). Thus if these photos are unpublished, they probably aren't in the public domain yet. If you can't locate the authors to obtain their permission, you might upload the photos to Wikipedia rather than Commons under a fair use rationale. See COM:OTRS for the procedure for documenting the owner's permission, and Commons:Licensing for the licenses you can choose from. That sounds like a good idea. You should be able to upload the picture by going to Commons:Upload and following the instructions from there. What aspect of the task is the question about? Uploading an image, or creating the collage in the first place? If the latter, some help might be available at Commons:Graphic Lab or Commons:Graphics village pump. That's the nice thing about Public Domain. Anyone can compose (and copyright, if they choose, and exploit commercially) a collection or collage of my pictures. No need to notify me or anything. In general, if the original images are under different licenses, some of which might have possibly incompatible "share alike" provisions, you can do it the way it was done for w:File:Delhi Montage 2.jpg: list the source, author and license of each image separately. As long as the images are simply displayed separately next to each other in the collage (rather than being blended into each other or something), it's IMHO reasonably to treat the collage as a mere aggregate (in GFDL jargon) or collection (in Creative Commons parlance) of independent works rather than as a single modified version or adaptation that would trigger the "share alike" clause. Indeed, even if all the licenses would in fact be compatible, I'd still recommend indicating the source, author and license status of each component image separately, simply as a matter of good form. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 14:32, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Thank you kindly. It seems we must install a program to do heavy cat wrangling. That's all right when it's my computer, but for Commons I'm mostly uploading, which means using someone else's that has a faster connection but I mustn't install software that the owner doesn't use. Come cold weather, my bicycling will slow down, thus producing fewer new pictures, and maybe I'll take time then to study catagory work so I can better arrange old pictures. Actually, it's rather meant for other readers. I have galleries in image pages, that people looking at the images in Wikipedia see, and in such cases I think it's better to give a clear and descriptive picture than showing off that the image is transparent or vector. The checkered background is defined in MediaWiki:Common.css. It should be possible to add something like
.nochecker .gallerybox .thumb img { background: transparent; }  /* allow the checkered background to be disabled for galleries */

Help needed for uploading information and pictures of the feature film that I made

I just finished the feature film and now i want to add information about my movie on wikipedia. I noticed that every movie pages are listed in specific format such a movie poster and main cast and crew members' information on right column and content page that includes plot, cast, production, development, soundtrack, References, and external links on left column.

How could i add these information on wikippedia for my movie? Is there any template available in commons? Or I had to just upload information with approppriate headings and upload pictures seperately and people an wikipedia will upload in right format?

There is no specific help in this area. Would someone plase help me? Thanks.

I found a color version of a black-and-white image on the "Jim Jones" Wikipedia article.

Is that a colorized image? It looks a lot like it might be. If so, I think it would be better (for both authenticity and copyright reasons) to stick with the original black-and-white version. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 03:24, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
Actually i don't think it is colourized; it looks more like an old colour photo, where the colour have gone a bit "off"; not surprising for film from 30-odd years ago; the colours might have been a bit wonky when it was taken, might have shifted with age, possibly a bit of both. assuming the white is supposed to actually be white, you can see how far it's drifted into greens, same with the blue sky. that's not an effect you'd expect to see in a colourized image.
As re: licensing; that sounds like it's compatible with cc sharealike atribution? Lx 121 (talk) 07:19, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
re-read, misunderstood the licensing question, sorry. assuming the jonestown site's b&w image is legitimately their's to share, & the b&w image is derived from the colour photo, the expectation is that the colour photo is likewise available to be shared? question: can you provide more info about the photobucket user whose account you found the colour version on? Copyright violation?

Hello, I uploaded a file, File:François de Laval tomb.JPG, without knowing about this clause about what not to upload:

"Photographs of art, statues, commercial packaging and often toys."

I uploaded a picture of the tomb itself, not a picture of a picture. Is that fine, or is it also a copyright violation? I'm sorry if I did something wrong but I don't understand and would like an explanation. Thank you. LovesMacs (talk) 00:20, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

See the links under COM:EIC#Copy for example Commons:Image casebook#3D art (sculptures etc.) and Commons:Freedom of panorama#Canada. It looks like you are OK if this sculpture is on display in a public place in Canada; if so, put a {{FoP-Canada}} template on it. Also, if you know where you took this photo, you could put a {{Location}} or {{Location dec}} template on the image page. (See for example the location template on File:26 portsmouth abbey.jpg.) I added a {{Location}} template with the coordinates of the cathedral. We don't have to worry about getting the exact coordinates of the specific part of the building. Super-accurate coordinates are not necessary for typical applications such as browsing photos on a map. Although in the future, if we have billions of photos from one city, we might want to make the coordinates extremely accurate - I leave that task to the future generations. --Teratornis (talk) 22:33, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Word wrap in svg

I'm trying to create an svg version of this file [5].

My attempts here (File:Inertial.svg) looks ok in Inkscape - the first caption wraps just before "inertial", but it doesn't appear to wrap here. I tried flowed text, that didn't help, and I've learned I should not use that anyway.Sphilbrick (talk) 23:14, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

I did not know how to link to the image in Wikibooks, so thanks for that. (I'm unclear who asked about moving the image from Wikipedia to the Commons - it isn't my question.) Moving from Wikipedia to Commons

At best you use Commonshelper, this tool will select the correct license and do everything a license conform tranfer needs. The link to Commonshelper is given inside the welcome template on your talkpage. You need a TUSC loging to use this Tool, so first klick the blue letters TUSC in the Tool. Improving images transferred from Flickr

Hi, I transferred two images from Flickr today that need color and brightness adjustments. I've made those adjustments in a program on my computer, but since the original images come from Flickr, I'm not sure how to upload them to Commons, whether it be overwriting the originals, uploading them with a new filename, or something else. I've also asked this question at Commons talk:Flickr files#Handling modified Flickr images; if any responses to this could be posted there, it would make it much easier to follow the discussion.
