Valued image

File:Von Karman vortices off Rishiri Island, Japan.jpg was closed as a valued image, but the template was never added to the image. Schuylar (talk) 00:12, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

User:VICbot added the {{VI}} template to File:Von Karman vortices off Rishiri Island, Japan.jpg in this diff, which looks to have occurred one minute after you posted this question. I have no idea whether the close timing is merely coincidental. --Teratornis (talk) 03:51, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
VIC seems to do that twice a day, so it looks normal. -- User:Docu at 06:48, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Image of statue

Hoping someone might be able to help me with a confusing licensing issue. I'm trying to figure out if this image (or perhaps a better photo of the same statue) is permissible on Wikipedia. I've read up on "freedom of panorama" which would seem to indicate that images of sculptures installed in public places prior to 1923 are public domain and photos of these are okay to upload. First, am I correct in that? Second, pertaining to this particular sculpture, my research indicates it was sculpted in 1921 (but not cast or installed in a public place), the artist died in 1944 and it was finally cast and installed in 1976. Does this mean it was essentially "published" in 1976 and therefore is not public domain? Curious situation on this one. Any help would be appreciated. Historical Perspective (talk) 15:14, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

You're a bit confused - take a look at Commons:Freedom of panorama. If the sculpture is in the public domain due to age, then any freely-licensed photo of the statue is acceptable, regardless of where it is located. Otherwise, it must be in a nation where freedom of panorama exists and it must meet the conditions for that nation, which generally include permanent installation in a public location. This case is a bit difficult because it's not clear to me whether the act of casting and installation was a creative act which attracts its own copyright protection or not - I kinda suspect the answer is no, but I'm not certain. Dcoetzee (talk) 16:16, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
The sculpture he mentions is in the US and I think he refers to COM:FOP#United_States. -- User:Docu at 16:51, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
The statue is indeed in the US. So, if I'm reading [[COM:FOP#United_States] correctly, the date of installation in a public place is the key, yes? So, 1976 would make this out of bounds, I suppose. Historical Perspective (talk) 18:32, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Copyrighted?

The originals of work shown here [1] are all certainly out of copyright. Can they be uploaded, or are the images of the original work considered protected? Malcolm Schosha (talk) 16:41, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

From COM:CB#2D art (paintings etc.):
  • If the original artwork is old enough to be in the public domain it is OK to upload a scan or a photocopy (from any source) or a photograph you have taken yourself. A faithful photographic copy of a public domain 2D artwork such as a painting may always be uploaded to Commons, even if the photograph was taken by somebody else and even if no photographer's licence has been provided: see Commons: When to use the PD-Art tag
Lots more about copyright is in COM:EIC#Copyright. --Teratornis (talk) 18:00, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

although everything seemed to be in order. One explanation could be that there is a missing '}}' after the description. It was when I tried to correct that that I got the spam message...

Oh, now I see! I think I somehow got two images uploaded... please remove one of them, and make the unvisible information visible. This was my first try with the basic uploader, it seems to easily make to uploads at the same time.

Also I had another accident some weeks ago, the name for http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:IT134609_fullsize-1-.jpg (File:IT134609 fullsize-1-.jpg) needs to be corrected. It should be Larsson_Bridge_Grez.jpg or something like that.

It was the missing }} to close the language field {{en|.... This must be closed, otherwise the information template not continues and the software thinks, the "source=" and "author=" is part of the {{en}} and that template doesnt have source or author parameters. suite100 is on the spam blacklist of meta:Spam blacklist, but for some reason I was able to edit File:Gossaert three royal children.jpg which also has a link - dont know what happened. If you want to rename a file please see Commons:File renaming and use {{rename}}. --Martin H. (talk) 20:56, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for the answer, Martin. Somehow I managed to add the missing '}}' (or, more exactly, it just happened after restarting Wikimedia Commons), but after that the source link turned unclickable. I do wonder why a site like suite101 would be in the spam list... Just like you I was able to upload another picture with the same source link. Well, I guess there is little left to do. The source link is now readable, if not clickable. Thanks for help. :) --carulmare (talk) 00:09, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Licensing a photo upload, namely Lady Huntingfield.jpg

How do I enter the right tag, and where, for own work, free use, public domain? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Erictimewell (talk • contribs)

By inserting one of the Copyright_tags into the "Permission" field, e.g.
|Permission={{pd-user|Erictimewell}}
By adding {{pd-user|Erictimewell}}, you release your photo with the following statement:

Public domain This work has been released into the public domain by its author, Erictimewell. This applies worldwide.
In some countries this may not be legally possible; if so:
Erictimewell grants anyone the right to use this work for any purpose, without any conditions, unless such conditions are required by law.

If you look at Copyright_tags, you will see that there are a few others, notably "free use" ones at Commons:Copyright_tags#Other_free_tags.
For future uploads of your own photos, you might want to use the option "entirely my own work" from Commons:Upload, you can pick the license from a list (see "Licensing:" section) and it gets added directly. -- User:Docu at 06:10, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

How to deal with pictures that are not free but I have permission from the owner?

Dear all,
As it is rather obvious from the subject of my post: I have troubles in finding decent license to some pictures that are not free but the owner of the pictures gave his permission to upload them to the commons. I couldn't find any information about the process of how to attach the permission of the owner to the pictures' page and how to include it to the license.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Jojojoe (talk) 08:25, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Another file with a missing image

Here's another file that supposed to have an image, but doesn't; File:The 521 PM train departing Newark Broad Street. ----DanTD (talk) 12:21, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

As the user who prepared it is still active, you might want to mention it to Mitchazenia. Otherwise you could just tag it with {{speedy|no file}}. Probably the bot had problems uploading the file thus it needs to be deleted anyways.
One could also attempted to upload it manually and flag it for license review. -- User:Docu at 12:27, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
I just discovered that the file is a duplicate of one that already is there. Perhaps I should talk to Mitchazenia about it. ----DanTD (talk) 12:35, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
If the other one has a good file description page, just add {{speedy}}. -- User:Docu at 12:41, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
No need, I deleted it. The working version is File:The 521 PM train departing Newark Broad Street.jpg. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 14:37, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Comparing the year ones to the first one I found on Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:LighthouseArc, I fixed one entry. Not sure why the template would need that many parameters though. Decade looks ok. searching for pictures of hotels

If you don't find enough images on Wikimedia Commons, you can also search Flickr for more freely licensed images, using the {{Flickr free}} template like this:
  • Search Flickr for images with the keywords: hotel under these licenses: cc-by or cc-by-sa
which finds 162,559 results, although many of the images are not exterior architecture shots of hotels. You did not specify whether you want exterior or interior shots, or both. Also try the search box to the left, and see Category:Marriott hotels. --Teratornis (talk) 21:44, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

Template:color

How do I get a border when the parameter is white?

Example:

as in Category:Orange and white

Thanks, --Mattes (talk) 13:37, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

<span style="background:orange;color:white">this is orange and white</span>
this is orange and white
WP:EN has a template {{background color}} which makes it easier, but we don't have that here, so it's back to basics.      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 16:55, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, that's a good idea but too complicated for mass usage. I've came up with <div style="font-size:x-large">{{color|Orange|■}}<span style="border:1px solid black; padding:1px; font-size:60%"> {{color|white|■}}</span></div> →
but the white box is not square. Now what?
"Border" {{color|white|border|■}} doesn't work in the tl → border ... --Mattes (talk) 18:26, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

How about:

white orange

BTW, Ianezz's signature has some related markup:  IANEZZ  -- User:Docu at 18:36, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
That's great! I just don't want to write the colors because that takes too much time. I already spent my half day with that and have 10% done... Sooo, I just want a border :-) My progress is like that: <div style="font-size:x-large"> {| border=1.5 cellspacing=0 |style=""|{{color|blue|■}} {{color|white|■}} |}</div> →
Now the boxes have shrinked :-( I want to have the same size as before.
Ianezz's signature adoptation w/o letters: <span style="font-size:80%;border:#000 solid 1px;padding:0;"><span style="margin:0;background:#FFF;color:#000"> {{color|blue|■}} {{color|white|■}}</span> →
  (also shrinked)
The space between the boxes and the border is too large. How do I minize it? We're getting there I hope. --Mattes (talk) 20:29, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
We might be more helpful if you would describe what you're trying to accomplish. You could, of course, do anything you want in an SVG image...      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 22:05, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
I think he wants to put 2 (or 3) colored squares in categories like Category:Orange and white, etc.
Maybe a special template that places large colored squares on the right side of the category description would work best.  Docu  at 22:09, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
I just want (a) a black border around the white box within a very small distance (b) same shape and size as (c) simple usage. My suggestion is to just modify {{color}} so that "border"{{easy-border}} will be possible as an option — I'm not able to modify that template though. --Mattes (talk) 22:24, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
I gave it a try. How do you like it now?  Docu  at 22:42, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for trying, it looks like this: border ... Hmmm. --Mattes (talk) 23:25, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
Currently, it just takes 2 parameters. As the template is there to set the color of the font (text), we should probably just change the background to black for a white font. If you use it just for a "■" as text, it seems hard to get a pretty result.  Docu  at 23:46, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

Question on possible deletion of same category name

Hey. Have a question on whether the subcategory of Category:Type 64 rifle, which is Type 64 rifle, should be erased. They are the same thing since both pages have the same thing. I've temporarily redirected it in the meantime. Ominae (talk) 09:23, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

It's located at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Type_64_rifle, BTW.

No. One is a category and one is a gallery page. Gallery pages are increasingly uncommon at Commons but serve a distinct purpose. Dcoetzee (talk) 09:31, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Category:Type 64 rifle, the target of your redirect, is a category the page Type 64 rifle is a gallery. See Commons:Galleries#Galleries_vs._categories. --Martin H. (talk) 09:34, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
In this case redirection is ok. In the gallery, there were just 3 random images from the 5 in the category. The redirect makes it easier for users to see the other 2 images that are just as important to the topic.
With a large number of images in a category, a gallery is useful as one can select images and there are more options to arrange images. -- User:Docu at 10:36, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
No, that means the gallery is a selection - thats ok - or not updated. That requires to add the new files to the gallery and update it but not to redirect it just because its outdated. --Martin H. (talk) 11:20, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
Selecting would require choosing. Just adding all images in the category at one time isn't selecting. Besides, 3 images doesn't really make a gallery. -- User:Docu at 11:27, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
Most galleries start small. If we delete all small galleries, we will never have new decent ones. There was some consensus that only galleries with one or two images could be deleted/redirected. --Foroa (talk) 12:21, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
We shouldn't delete this one, redirection is fine. I think the small galleries are mainly due to a bot. Eventually that should be cleaned up.  Docu  at 07:22, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
Redirecting a gallery is another word of making it disappear, almost deletion, not fine. --Foroa (talk) 08:28, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

Another person, not a Wikipedia or Commons user, wants to give photos of his own. Can I upload them?

Hi there. I've contacted a guy who took some valuable photos of world famed golf players and instructors and at my request is ready to give them to public domain (his words) for Wikimedia Commons and / or Wikipedia to upload them. Problem #1 is I don't find the proper option in the upload form, it's not my creation, but another guy's creation. Problem #2 is that he's absolutely not willing to become a Wikimedia or even Wikipedia user, you know, he's the old fashioned-not techie type of guy, so he's not uploading the images himself.--Nuares (talk) 13:52, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

No problem, we just need his permission documented in the way outlined at Commons:OTRS#If_you_need_to_confirm_permission.  Docu  at 13:57, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
If the person is literally unwilling to touch a computer, you will need to have him write and sign a handwritten letter licensing the images appropriately. Then scan this letter and submit it by e-mail to OTRS. Dcoetzee (talk) 21:28, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
Once the person has written the letter and it's sent to OTRS, upload the images with a {{PD-author}} template (making sure to add the photographer's name after a pipe character) and add an {{OTRS pending}} tag. Help, please. The image I just uploaded does not meet the standards for 'Fair Use' and needs to be deleted. I've been searching/reading for over an hour, and cannot figure out who, what, when, or how to do it. The image is Tim_DeKay.jpg. Thank you.Watsammatta u (talk) 23:28, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Commons:Deletion guidelines. E.g. use {{speedydelete|reason}}. Regarding "fair use": Commons is only for free content, fair use is not accepted on Commons. --Martin H. (talk) 22:43, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
I have read that link many times now. It does not answer my original question, which you just reiterated.Watsammatta u (talk) 23:38, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
File:Tim DeKay.jpg has been deleted. In the future, you could simply add a {{copyvio}} or {{speedydelete}} tag on the image page. You won't be able to delete the image yourself, so placing that tag on the image page alerts an administrator that it needs to be deleted. Wknight94 talk 01:47, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Confused about the process for uploading an image from Flickr

Hello. I would like to upload an image from Flickr to Commons and use it for some relevant articles on the English Wikipedia, but I'm a little confused about the process. I read http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Flickr_files and the image I want to upload (http://www.flickr.com/photos/oregondot/3085516372/) appears to be under the http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/deed.en license. Am I supposed to upload the image and then tag it with (flickrreview) or do I need to have it reviewed before I can upload it? How do I tag it? TimeClock871 (talk) 08:09, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Hello easiest way is to use some script to upload it I use this http://toolserver.org/~bryan/flickr/upload it tags it automatically , you just add categories, description if missing. It also tells if the permission is suitable for commons, you cant upload wrong images. --Typ932 (talk) 08:17, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm having trouble using the script. When I put the link for the original, larger image (http://www.flickr.com/photos/oregondot/3085516372/sizes/o/), it auto converts it to http://flickr.com/photo/28364885@N02/3085516372 (which links to an error) and nothing shows up during the preview section. TimeClock871 (talk) 08:54, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
Tools:~magnus/flickr2commons.php might be easier to operate.  Docu  at 09:22, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm getting an error message saying: "Checking license ... Unsuitable license : <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <rsp stat="fail"> <err code="1" msg="Photo "o" not found (invalid ID)" /> </rsp>" This license is the same as another image (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fowler_and_Governor_installing_solar_panel.jpg) from the same author here at Commons too. Did I do something wrong? TimeClock871 (talk) 09:37, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
Just link to the biggest image, it will upload it, it will show somehow the smaller image but loads the biggest, after you hit next you need to save the image and after that click the spot where it says click this, after that it will upload it, it can take some time, usually its quite fast. If problems there is also other script http://toolserver.org/~magnus/flickr2commons.php --Typ932 (talk) 11:48, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
I got it to work (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oregon_I-5,_I-205_interchange_solar_highway_%282008-12-04%29.jpg). Thanks everyone! TimeClock871 (talk) 12:00, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Can images from a JAXA spacecraft be used on Wikipedia?

I would like to add this photo to the Wikipedia article about the IKAROS spacecraft. The image comes from this site, which is run by JAXA, the Japanese space agency. Do we have the right to use this photo on Wikipedia, and if so, how can I upload it so it can be used there? Gary2863 (talk) 00:49, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

I would say: Not possible. See http://www.jaxa.jp/policy_e.html (is linked in the footer). "Conditions of use" prohibit modification. "nd" (No Derivatives) licenses are not acceptable on commons as far as I know. --Saibo (Δ) 02:10, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
Not only non-derivative, the use is allowed for edcational purposes, use of the Materials for business or commercial purposes without the prior permission of the copyright holder (JAXA) is strictly prohibited. Both, not free for modification and not free for commercial use, is not acceptable on Commons, see Commons:Project scope#Required licensing terms. --Martin H. (talk) 03:03, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Upload from en-wikipedia

I just have spent almost an hour trying to upload this: File:2006-02-23 074112 Kashan.jpg from wikipedia. I suppose I am doing something wrong but have no idea what it is.

It is here [5], and the image's creator, user:Marmoulak has given it a public domain license. Malcolm Schosha (talk) 13:27, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

You can find detailed directions at en:Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons. If you aren't confident in your own ability, just tag it with {{Copy to Wikimedia Commons}} and let someone else take care of it. Powers (talk) 17:09, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Error

I added this photo in error from my powerpoint talk on Berlin (a mix of my own photos and I think in this case flickr). Can I upload the pictures found on the page: http://www.communes.com/aquitaine/gironde/cubzac-les-ponts_33240/

They are postcards which are more than 100 years old. (From 1900.) Cheers, 92.156.16.16 02:15, 13 July 2010 (UTC).

Some of the postcards have author information, not much but it is enough to not call them an anonymous work. What do we know about the author, did the author died >70 years ago. --Martin H. (talk) 21:03, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Modified images

Hi, File:Arbil, Iraq.jpg is apparently a not really well-done composite image (it doesn't even reflect the actual geography of the city), and the same goes for File:Iraqi Kurdish village orchard.jpg (the original sky was replaced; see the clear break along the mountains) and probably this one (File:Iraqi Kurdish villagers.jpg). What's the policy on this kind of images? Zoeperkoe (talk) 21:34, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

It might be worth to note the type of modification that was being used in the description and add a corresponding category.  Docu  at 06:44, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
Can't really see how they could be in any way educational (well, except for an article on bad photoshopping). I'd say delete--DieBuche (talk) 07:51, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
wtf? Even more of them, seriously--DieBuche (talk) 08:00, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
They're all composed from non free sources, eg. see [7]--DieBuche (talk) 08:17, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
I didn't have much luck with that link, but if they are, please list them for deletion.  Docu  at 08:27, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
Weird, i still see, but maybe it expired? Here's a static link to the background for File:Ninawa, Iraq.jpg: http://nature.desktopnexus.com/wallpaper/158865/
It wasn't expired, but of the 4 results, the only one I could located was also sourced to flickr. The desktopnexus link shows another image.  Docu  at 09:05, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
Have a close look at the sky, or even better overlay them in photoshop or gimp: The clouds are exactly the same. Extremly unlikely for that to happen IRL--DieBuche (talk) 09:18, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
Part of the clouds are indeed similar. It's also at http://www.flickr.com/photos/41072946@N08/3780268698/  Docu  at 09:28, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
Smts fishy is going on with File:Iraqi Kurdish village orchard.jpg: It claims to be from James (Jim) Gordon, a now deleted flickr account; while a previously uploaded dupe (File:Hills south west of Sanandaj near the village of Kilaneh.jpg) claims to be from Kuresh Anbari, while it was uploaded by w:Marmoulak. w:Marmoulak claims to have sent OTRS, but either it never arrived or the volunteer forgot to stick the template on it.--DieBuche (talk) 09:30, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
Nomed all files by that flickr user for deletion here. Also inquired about that permission--DieBuche (talk) 10:29, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
So it's a delete then? The first one I linked to has already been removed, but what about the other two I linked? And as you found out pretty quick from which images they were made, is there a quick way to check that? Zoeperkoe (talk) 14:14, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
File:Hills south west of Sanandaj near the village of Kilaneh.jpg has OTRS, will be added to the image. It was widely discussed on en.wp the sky hasn't been replaced but just horridly masked (for whatever reasons). I'll delete File:Iraqi Kurdish village orchard.jpg, but only because it's a dupe of the former. --DieBuche (talk) 14:25, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
Enable TinEye in Preferences->Gadgets--DieBuche (talk) 14:55, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

I contributed under the wrong license and need to remove right away. Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by JulesA123 (talk • contribs) 19:01, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

It always helps in these discussions to be clear about what image you uploaded. File:Atypon logo.jpg is a simple logo; as such, I've tagged it under {{PD-textlogo}} and trademarked. Does that satisfy your concerns? If not, it would be helpful for you to amplify; in any case, you may always use "Nominate for deletion" on the side of the image, which is the standard way to ask the community to delete an image. You could also use {{sdelete}}; while that's normally what I would suggest in a situation where you very recently uploaded a file you don't want on Commons, this is a preexisting file found on the net, available to us freely, making it less likely an admin will delete it without discussion. If you wish to mark w:Atypon with {{speedy|G7, request of author}}, and it gets deleted, that would increase the likelyhood of this image getting deleted, as then it would no longer have a prima facia case of being in scope.--Prosfilaes (talk) 19:16, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Need help adding a license

Hi,

I'm looking to add a GFDL self license to this file:(File:Reflect_MorganWikimania2010.pdf), which is a presentation that I created completely by myself. I thought I licensed this when I uploaded it, but apparently it didn't stick :) Now I can't figure out where the license tag goes on the file page. Can someone help me out? Jtmorgan (talk) 02:20, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

It is more convenient for others to reuse your work if you dual-license, for example with {{GFDL}} and {{cc-by-sa-3.0}}. See COM:L#Multi-licensing. Just add the license templates below the {{Information}} template on the File:Reflect MorganWikimania2010.pdf image page, and remove the {{no license|month=July|day=14|year=2010}} template. --Teratornis (talk) 03:03, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

Question: Crediting commons image in print publication

Hello - How do I credit Wikipedia in a caption for Hiroshige's "The Great Wave at Kanagawa," which appears at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hokusai ? The image will appear in a book on the work of Richard Bennett, who was influenced by this image. 198.145.96.33 12:57, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

Why would credit Wikipedia? It has nothing to do with the file. File:Great Wave off Kanagawa2.jpg tells you that it's in the public domain, so there's no legal obligation to credit anyone; that the original file is from the Library of Congress, and a quick search starting from their page on the file shows no request for or suggested form of credit; and our file was restored by User:Durova, who does not request credit on the file page, but is contactable through the talk page or by email should you want to ask them if they want to be credited in some form.--Prosfilaes (talk) 13:18, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
I disagree: Commons has hosted the image, provided details as to copyright status, and indexed it so it can be located. An editor of a commercial publication will want to credit Commons for all this effort, and the guys named above, and the copyright holder. So the question still stands, how do we collectively wished to be credited?--ClemRutter (talk) 21:40, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
Commons has hosted the file, but Wikipedia didn't, and that's who he offered to credit. I don't see any reason that justifies crediting Commons here, especially not in the space offered by a caption.--Prosfilaes (talk) 00:53, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
Even if it's not a credit line defined by license terms, it's good practice to indicate the source of the image. If you click on "Download as PDF" on w:Hokusai, something like the following appears in the "Image Sources, Licenses and Contributors" section of the PDF:
File:Great Wave off Kanagawa2.jpg Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Great_Wave_off_Kanagawa2.jpg License: Public Domain Contributors: Katsushika, Hokusai, 1760-1849
As Commons' file description pages aren't all machine-readable, the feature doesn't provide optimal descriptions for all images, but in this case, I think it's ok.  Docu  at 05:16, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

Newbie can't find his uploads

Hi, I'm a newbie and I've just started to import images from the Geograph project using the Geograph 2 Commons tool. It looks like I've saved the files successfully, but when I use the search tool they don't appear! What's happening? Is there a time lag between uploading the files and them becoming 'discoverable' by the search engine. I confess I haven't figured out how to categorise the files yet!--Westwalespics (talk) 21:43, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

The search is always some hours behind--DieBuche (talk) 22:26, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
They're listed here: [8]--DieBuche (talk) 22:30, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
Will these files eventually become visible to search, or do they have to be categorised first? Thanks.--Westwalespics (talk) 22:39, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
The next morning around 6 (UTC), they are generally visible through Special:Search.
To be of any use, the images should be categorized into one or several topical categories too (see Commons:Categories). Those I checked on Special:WhatLinksHere/User:Westwalespics were all uncategorized. For Geograph images, try to add each image at least to a location specific categories. More categories depending on what is visible in a specific picture would be great.
If there is an article in one or the other Wikipedia that isn't illustrated and the image would make a good choice based on the other available ones, you might want to add it there too.  Docu  at 05:06, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
There is a Category:Images from the Geograph British Isles project with 273,033 members. The Geograph.org2Commons tool automatically categorizes (via the {{Geograph}} template) the images it uploads into that category, but as a hidden category. To categorize them manually into other descriptive (and non-hidden) categories, you may like to use: Help:Gadget-HotCat. For example, File:Margam Castle - geograph.org.uk - 378297.jpg can go into Category:Margam Castle. Often you can find suitable categories by copying words from an image description or location into the search box. --Teratornis (talk) 07:37, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
BTW, below is a list of uncategorized images uploaded through File Upload Bot yesterday/this morning. It includes many geograph images.  Docu  at 12:20, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

/gallery issue

For some years my /gallery has been blank. This has not worried me: I don't do vanity, but it is now confusing Commonist uploads so if I can fix it perhaps I should. User:ClemRutter/gallery is the file- can anyone say how I can clear the glitch- or what caused it? --ClemRutter (talk) 11:40, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

I think the page contains too many "gallery" tags and the server can not process it anymore. You can see the data here, so you could split it up into smaller pages. A simpler solution is to change the title so Commonist can use the new (now blank) page. ;-) - Erik Baas (talk) 13:34, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, I have done a rename- /gallery0. It works and Commonist is happy. I still fail to load edit hint using Firefox 3.5.9 on Ubuntu but wont try again. --ClemRutter (talk) 16:26, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
The problem is not specific to your browser, it's just too large. As you don't seem to want the page, I blanked it for now. To have it display a gallery, you could split it into several pages.  Docu  at 09:08, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Uploaded file cannot be seen at English Wikipedia

I wanted to upload a file in English Wikipedia and was invited to upload it at the Wikipedia Commons instead. So I went through the process of registering at the Commons and uploading the file. It is now 20 hours later and my Userid is still unrecognized (red) and the file that I uploaded is unrecognized (unlinked red) in the English Wikipedia article. This is frustrating. If I had uploaded it at the English Wikipedia site, the file would have been instantly linkable. Please explain to me how I can get English Wikipedia to "see" my uploaded file! Djmaschek (talk) 01:33, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Your user id is not unrecognized. It is red, because you have not put any text on your user page. Also you didn't really need to register a new account here. As your user account at en.WP was created before the activation of SUL, simply go to the preferences there and activate SUL and from then on you can change to any Wikimedia project without registering or loging in. If en-account and Commons-account have the same password it should also be no problem to unify them. Then you also don't need to log-in when coming here.
Your file is at File:Battle of Sacile 1809 Map.JPG and I can see it in the english article ('Battle of Sacile' in the lower third on the left side). If you don't see it you maybe have an old (cached) version in your browser. Refresh (purge) it and then you should be able to see it too. See more about this problem at en:Wikipedia:REFRESH. -- Cecil (talk) 01:45, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Try CatScan2. The result includes all file description pages edited after June 30, but it is sorted by upload date and on the far right there is a column with the upload date ("Uploaded"). Currently, the last c. 14 files were uploaded in July.  Docu  at 05:59, 19 July 2010 (UTC), edited 07:36, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

File Upload Confirmation / Denial?

I uploaded several flickr images through using the Flinfo tool. Added categories, and chose the Licensing option through the drop down menu. Clicked the Upload fle button and just kept getting the same Upload file page with the "If you do not provide suitable license and source information, your upload will be deleted without further notice. Thank you for your understanding." message. I selected the license and the source info is there. How do I know if the image is being accepted or denied? There is no confirmation.

Is there a way that I may upload multiple pictures at once to wikimedia commons?

Deleted Content

I'm rather disappointed / concerned about the liberties which are taken by Wikipedia without due regard to the actual content that is being posted. "Educational purposes" is one of the guidelines... I can't think of anything more educational than the suggested FUTURE of a historic building ~ that already HAS been recognized/nominated for the National Historic Registry (just as I posted on the discussion site). And, THEN I am told: "If you do not provide suitable license and source information, your upload will be deleted without further notice. Thank you for your understanding." No, I do NOT understand!! I am the author or source for the information. I do not REQUIRE any "license" for my information. Or, did you prefer I provide the name of the Realtor who informed me of these things?!—Preceding unsigned comment added by Omega ceo (talk • contribs)

We are not Wikipedia. The information we store is tied up into pictures, video and sound, all of which are subject to copyright. If you posted a picture of a suggested future of a building, we'd need rights from the artist who made that picture. If you took a photograph of something not copyrightable, then we'd need an explicit license from you to use it. In any case, without the name of the picture or any more context, it's hard to say anything.--Prosfilaes (talk) 17:12, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
As there was no upload, it has likely been a text contribution, more suitable for Wikipedia.  Docu  at 21:43, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
I've emailed Omega ceo, with a more personal approach, see if there are any pieces to pick-up. Trev M  ~ 10:32, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
Unless it's too personal, would you mind posting it here too? This way we can learn.  Docu  at 10:43, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
If Omega ceo replies, I'll suggest we continue discussion here. Best, Trev M  ~ 10:52, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Reinhold Lepsius

I am new to Wikimedia Commons and would like to upload a photograph (which I took) of a painting by Reinhold Lepsius (who died in Germany in 1922) of Fritz Springer, one of the founders of the company I work for. I have permission to upload and comment on the photo of the picture, and copyright has expired (70 years), yet the Wikimedia rules say I can't upload a photo of a work of art. Is this true even after 70 years? If not, what should I do?

Best, Berlineric

The painter died >70 years ago, so copyright on his works expired according to German copyright law. You can take photos of paintings by this painter and upload them here. Use in Commons:Upload It is from somewhere else de: Commons:Hochladen: Es stammt von woanders.) and the licensing Reproduction of a painting that is in the public domain because of its age (de: 2D Reproduktion eines Gemäldes, das aufgrund seines Alters gemeinfrei ist). --Martin H. You might be better off asking them.  Docu  at 07:44, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
If you want to upload it here, Commons:OTRS#If_you_need_to_confirm_permission outlines what they would have to provide.  Docu  at 10:45, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
Doesn't look like a painting to me, rather a photo with some filter applied--DieBuche (talk) 12:04, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
I was wondering about that too, but the answer would really be the same, no?  Docu  at 06:18, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

I have photographs and a map that was created by someone. All have never been in publications and have no license attached to them and no copyrights. They were given to me by the author with the full intent of posting them on wikipedia for an article. How do I download them onto Commons because they keep asking me for a license but there is none. I don't know what to do.

Stephanie Loria

The author needs to release the images with one of the permission statements available at Commons:OTRS#If_you_need_to_confirm_permission. This requires the author to choose one of the licenses acceptable at Commons.  Docu  at 06:15, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Dear Help Desk,

I received an error for an image I uploaded, no author, source or copyright. I followed the procedure to get a written copyright permission from the the author and updated the file. I can't see how to get the uploader to accept the new file. Please help!

You created your account on July 17, 2010. At the time that you posted your question, your account was not yet autoconfirmed. It should be now, which means you should see a link that says Upload a new version of this file near the bottom of the File:TyHarris.jpg page. --Teratornis (talk) 06:13, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

How do I update an image?

Hello. There are many images here on Commons that are used on the English Wikipedia to summarize country's laws on specific issues like capital punishment, euthanasia, same-sex marriage, etc. Many of these are updated numerous times to reflect new legal changes. There is a particular one for cannabis (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:World-cannabis-laws.png) that I would like to change to reflect that Massachusetts has decriminalized it in 2008 per http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massachusetts_Sensible_Marijuana_Policy_Initiative. But I'm not sure how to update the image. Do I just modify it and upload over the current version? I'd appreciate any help. TimeClock871 (talk) 15:58, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Yes, just use the link "Upload a new version of this file" at the bottom to upload the new version--DieBuche (talk) 16:23, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Oh wow. That was easy. Thanks! TimeClock871 (talk) 16:53, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Image from website

Hello! I Want to upload image, that was published in one website, rather blog. I have permission from that image uploader/author. I tried to find answer here, but I still don't understand. What exactly I need to do? (In that page there is no licence showed) Thank You! --Niky201 (talk) 18:18, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

If the website operator is the copyright holder(photographer) of the image you can ask him for permission (all necessary is described on that page, you can cancel to read the example). --Martin H. (talk) 02:56, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

File data base crash

Greetings,

I have been trying to view the image files I have uploaded to Wiki' Commons, but when I click on 'files uploaded' I get this error:

'A database error has occurred Query: SELECT cl_to as cat FROM categorylinks LEFT JOIN u_daniel_cache.commonswiki_nontopics ON namespace = 14 AND title = cl_to where cl_from = 10979522 AND id IS NULL Function: getCategories Error: 1146 Table 'u_daniel_cache.commonswiki_nontopics' doesn't exist (sql-s4)'

Any ideas? Gwillhickers (talk) 17:31, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Images from copyright-expired works (eg on Project Gutenberg)

I wanted to upload some screenshots of cover/inside art from an author (Mrs George de Horne Vaizey) whose books are now copyright-expired and available for free on Project Gutenberg and elsewhere. Could someone please advise me as to what these should be classified under (and if they can be uploaded?)

Thank you in advance.Istara (talk) 10:00, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

Sure you can upload them if the copyright is expired, tag them as {{PD-old}}. Maybe link them here afterwards, so we can have a quick look at them? And please sign your questions using the button with the pencil icon, or by writing ~~~~DieBuche (talk) 10:03, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Lady_of_the_Basement_Flat.jpg
I hope they're ok. It's such lovely artwork in such lovely old novels, I am hoping that the Wikipedia page will encourage more people to discover them.Istara (talk) 10:53, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
It's not that simple; Gutenberg works under simple US law, whereas Commons needs them to be free in the country of first publication. So under UK law, we need to know when the illustrator died, to make sure they died more than 70 years ago. Also, a link back to the Gutenberg page where these are found is generally polite and useful.--Prosfilaes (talk) 14:10, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
Ah I see. The Wikipedia page on which they are used does link back to Project Gutenberg for the list of the author's works (though not from each image - should I fix that here or there?) All three images were by different illustrators as well. Thanks for your help with this. Istara (talk) 14:37, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

See above, #File data base crash, there is a temporary problem with the toolserver. See here for the reason. --Martin H. (talk) 02:46, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
Ouch! Thank you very much. And...that could be the reason because I can´t see common images in the Google Earth in these days, coudn't it? :( --Roberto Fiadone (talk) 03:00, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
The only information I found about Google Earth is here: About the Google Earth Geographic Web Layer. There may be a Google group where you can ask questions about Google Earth. Also see the Wikimedia Technical Blog which sometimes gives clues about server problems. --Teratornis (talk) 04:20, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
The GoogleEarth/GoogleMaps link of Category:Media with locations also runs on the toolserver http://toolserver.org/~para/GeoCommons/, so yes, it is maybe affected by the problems too. --Martin H. (talk) 05:16, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
Not visible commons pics markers on GE occur always parallel to such server problems concerning the gallery function - at least my experience. -- Хрюша ?? 11:45, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Can you be a bit more specific? Are there particular files you would like undeleted? Powers (talk) 17:50, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Yes, there are. TorcidaECV3.JPG and TorcidaECV.JPG. "Source information" is missing in this file too, but what else than "own" am I supposed to put there? Victor Kbça (talk) 16:37, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

...? Victor Kbça (talk) 15:15, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

You could try putting the real source information in File:VandersonVitória.JPG; Martin H. put a link to a source showing an image this image was cropped from. I have no idea what you're talking about with TorcidaECV3.JPG; if it had been deleted, File:TorcidaECV3.JPG would say so. Without the right names, there's not much a non-admin can say.--Prosfilaes (talk) 15:56, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

The files TorcidaECV3.JPG and TorcidaECV.JPG were deleted. And what do you mean with "showing an image this image was cropped from"? I took theses photos and I'm uploading them. They're not in the original size but I have them here in my computer. Victor Kbça (talk) 21:14, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Re:Permission to use image

Re:Permission to use image

Dear WikiMedia Commons,

I am contacting you because you are the author of the image on http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e2/Sports_divers.jpg and I would like to get your permission to use this image. I am a beginning programmer, attending DeVry University and currently taking a website development class. This image would be perfect for my website that I will be building from start to finish which is about Today's entertainment in Sports. I promise to limit the use of this image if you allow me the use of this material.

The file was not created by "Wikimedia Commons" - Wikimedia Commons is the name of this project, a project to collect educational free content media files - the file was created by the person stated in File:Sports divers.jpg and is licensed under the license written on the same page. This media file was released by the copyright holder into the public domain, so it is written on the image description (I, the copyright holder of this work, hereby release it into the public domain) you are free to use it for any purpose. See COM:REUSE too. --Martin H. (talk) 05:07, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
A beautiful image, but I wonder if it's not a derivative work of photographs of the pictured athletes. Powers (talk) 13:51, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

Image needs renaming

Hello, On July 9, I added a tag requesting that an image file be renamed, but no action has been taken yet. I added the tag to the file: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Léon_Bollée_&_Wilbur_Wright_1908.jpg. It should be renamed: Wilbur Wright and Hart Berg.jpg. Leon Bollee is NOT in the photo, as uploaded to Commons. Bollee is shown in the original uncropped source photo at the French online photo site. This photo (Wright and Berg) is used in the en:Wright Brothers article. Thank you. DonFB (talk) 17:52, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

It will get done, eventually. In the meantime, you could create a redirect from the new name and use that in the article.  Docu  at 05:36, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
Or I could just go ahead and do it. I used the filename specified in the rename request, File:HartBerg with WilburWright.jpg. Hope that's okay. I also fixed the link to the image in en:Wright Brothers, since it had already been changed some time ago to "File:HartBerg and WilburWright.jpg" (meaning CommonsDelinker had no way of finding it). Powers (talk) 13:48, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

Somalia

The image File:Saaylac.jpg is described as being of the "Zeila coastline ... in the Awdal region of Somalia". Someone has added "THIS IS NOT SOMALILAND, BUT THE "SUGARLOAF" IN RIO DE JANEIRO" and I can't help but agree - compare it with the images in Category:Pão de Açúcar (Rio de Janeiro). The coastline of Northern Somalia is mostly flat desert landscape with a few cliffs. This image is of a mountains covered in lush tropical vegetation. 84.93.181.172 19:59, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

The image is used to illustrate Somaliland in half a dozen languages, but it looks odd to me, too. Could someone who knows one (or both) locations well check this? Jonathunder (talk) 03:33, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
I added {{fact}} to the image.  Docu  at 07:08, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Do we have any template similar to {{DEFAULTSORT}} at en:wp? I observe that both {{DEFAULTSORT}} and {{Defaultsort}} are nonexistent. Nyttend (talk) 21:02, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

No, I guess people around here figured out how to use the magic word.  Docu  at 05:35, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
Ah, I was misunderstanding how it worked: I thought that we always had to do DEFAULTSORT|Doe, John rather than DEFAULTSORT:Doe, John. Thanks for the pointer to the magic words page. Nyttend (talk) 01:40, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Reuse

How do I know what I can download and what I can't. Are most of the images available to download for training purposes in a commercial establishment? Can you provide some simple guidelines —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.200.118.1 (talk • contribs) (UTC)

Yes, please see Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia. In short, all of our images are available for use for any purpose, as long as you a) provide attribution for the author and b) agree to release any modifications you make under the same terms. Some things may be subject to trademark law, but those exceptions are usually noted on the image description page. Powers (talk) 15:48, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
Thankfully, some images don't require you to release any modifications you make under the same terms. Many of our images carry permission notices that only require you to attribute the author, and many others don't require anything at all. Nyttend (talk) 01:38, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
Indeed, but I was trying to keep things as simple as possible for the questioner. =) Powers (talk) 12:27, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
Ahh, good point. Nyttend (talk) 23:01, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Image deletion

Hello - I created an image Trophic.jpg that was deleted some time back. I created the image using Artweaver and indicated clearly that I was the creator of the image. I want to have it freely available and uploaded. Each time I try to upload it I cannot - I keep getting a warning that a previous version had already been deleted, please modify the description and that I should check the log. I've spent an entire morning trying to figure this out and still do not know why it was deleted in the first place. No matter how I fill in the form - the image will not load. Please help - I would like to load this image up again. Thanks.Thompsma (talk) 17:08, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

On your talk page, there is a message:

  • it's a derivative work - you used some other pictures, so you need to point your sources and their licenses. All components need to be free. Masur (talk) 07:03, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

So please don't just reupload it. It had problems that needed to be fixed.--Prosfilaes (talk) 17:17, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

In the description I indicated that the other sources all came from free license that could be modified freely. I didn't just re-upload it - I have tried to find out the means to fix the problem. How do you point to the other sources? I carefully spent the time grabbing only images that were free license.Thompsma (talk) 17:43, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
Free licenses require at least attribution of the author, if the original author is not attributed the reuse is a violation of the license terms and license contract will terminate automatically. The image description of File:Trophic.jpg contained only the source information Own work and your name as the author, it did not contain sources, no authors, it does not indicate the copyright status of the used images. See montage or see e.g. File:Cuscoinfobox.png, a montage that I added the source information according to my personal taste, you may find a different layout or way to link, attribute and indicate the license and to add all the required information to your montage. --Martin H. (talk) 18:05, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks Martin H. - that is the information I was looking for! I should be able to fix this - but do I re-upload with modifications or do I somehow access the deleted version and modify?Thompsma (talk) 18:11, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

I undeleted it, now hurry please! Also the last time this was undeleted (February 12) you had >two months time to indicate your sources and you didnt do anything to the file description. The description must not be perfect, we can improve it afterwards, but you must at least indicate all sources you used for the montage. --Martin H. (talk) 18:12, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks and yes...I went on a wiki break for a couple of months while preparing my thesis.Thompsma (talk) 18:59, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
Ug...it is proving difficult to retrace the original photos that I used - although I did ensure they were free licensed. I will probably just use new images. All this copyright stuff is a royal pain in the A#% - doesn't mean I don't understand its utility and I will comply, but a lot of the fuss is nonsensical.Thompsma (talk) 19:06, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
You may find TinEye or Google Image Search useful. Powers (talk) 12:28, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Problem

Hi! I think we have a problem with this picture. Two users are working on similar images, and both were listed as authors. They made this picture together, but after their conflict, each has made his version of the image specifying only itself as the author. Then they start the debate to protect their copyrights. I tried to talk to them, but without success. I have therefore concluded that in the interests of Wikipedia, it is best to remove controversial images because it is not clear who is the real author of these images. This image has remained. I am transferred some pictures from Wikipedia to Commons before the conflict, and I can't delete images on this project, so I need your help and your opinion. Thanks mickiτ 10:12, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

If you feel it should be deleted, you can make a deletion request. Personally, I'd leave it to the author(s) to do that.  Docu  at 10:19, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
I talked with them for several days. They want to remove only pictures of the other author, but not their own pictures. That's the problem. This is done by the author of this image here on Commons. mickiτ 10:31, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

permission for use

I am wanting to use a photo of the exterior of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Dallas and found one on your site. This would be for the North Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church newspaper, but I did not want to use anything that might get us into copyright trouble. Is this photo in the public domain -- in other words, do I need permission to use it?

It would definitely help if you told us which image you are referring to, exactly. In any case, the conditions for use should be stated right at the image description page. If it is public domain, the description will say so, if there are any other conditions, they will be described and linked to on that page. --rimshottalk 17:24, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Having an account on Wikipedia does not necessarily mean you have an account on Commons. The simplest solution to this is to log into Wikipedia (not here, which is Commons), go into preferences and activate SUL/global account. That should reserve your username across all Wikimedia wikis, including this one, provided that no one else took your Wikipedia username here. If all goes well, you should be able to log into Commons with the same username and password from Wikipedia. --O (висчвын) 02:00, 30 July 2010 (GMT)

Photo of myself

hello! i want to upload a picture from a free website that contains myslf performing on stage. there is no "contact" section in the pages where I can connect with the author so i can ask permission if i can upload. the gallery can be saved to a computer and appears to have no exclusivity of the pictures.. what will I do? can i upload it and link the image to the website after so they will know they are acknowledged as its source? i dont know also which license it does belong here is the link: http://www.freewebs.com/themagicstaff/gallery.htm thank you zcruiser

No, without permission you can not upload it. Here on Commons the copyright holder must agree to a free license. A free license means not only that someone is acknowledged, a free license is a written permission to anyone, not only you or only Wikipedia but anyone, to reuse the work anytime for any purpose including commercial reuse and modification. The copyright holder must agree to this. If there is no possibility to contact the copyright holder (maybe the guestbook?) you will regretably never have the chance to use the image here. --Martin H.
