WorldEdit

  • World map of population: It would be nice to have a world map similar to this, where the size of the country shows the population instead of geographical size. //moralist 19:29, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
    • There is this cartogram (or anamorphic map) at [1]. With following conditions: Permission is hereby granted for the use and distribution by others of the text and figures on this page for noncommercial purposes. Go ahead and send them to your friends, post them on your blog, use them in school. Whatever. My only request is that you either give a link to this page or just mention that the maps were made by me. (Or both, if you're feeling particularly enthusiastic.). I'm not sure if this qualifies for Wikimedia use. Also there is worldmapper with following disclaimer: Permission will usually be granted to non-profit organisations, and we welcome enquiries from other interested parties. Please contact info@worldmapper.org. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.77.187.104 (talk • contribs) 16:37, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
  • World map of Mitsubishi elevators: I want a map, where all countries which have Mitsubishi elevators are red, and all other countries are gray. --84.61.188.59 14:59, 11 August 2011 (UTC)
    • It might be extremely difficult to compile a list of countries that have Mitsubishi elevators. With so many companies/institutions using their elevators since the 1930s, I doubt anyone could come up with that list. If you have a list, I'm sure we could create one for you easily. -- JoannaSerah (talk) 00:15, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

AstronomyEdit

This picture on this site is a striking illustration of the decrease of the Earth's axial tilt. It shows the Sun's light on the floor of the San Petronio Basilica in Bologne, Italy, on the day of the winter solstice. The light was exactly at the center more than two centuries ago; a shift, due to the decrease of the axial tilt, is clearly visible today. I can see a few uses for that picture or an equivalent one. I have imported a few images on Commons, but I feel I must ask for help for this one, especially for the question of rights. Thank you.

looking for a video of fluorine reactingEdit

Can anyone help here...or point me to more places to ask for help?

I want a video (or perhaps a photo) of fluorine gas reacting with something. There is nothing PD (or even that I can think of as an easy donation). Looking for something like in the videos below. Will go into a Wiki Featured Article Candidate. Either someone to make it for us or who has it.

    • Archangel, I have taken care of business! I have negotiated with the king of peacock spider photos, Dr. Jurgen Otto, and convinced him to graciously release one of his images at reduced resolution with a license allowing it to be used on Commons. The image is File:MalePeacockSpider.jpg and I have now added it to the articles on Maratus as well as Maratus volans. I think I picked a good one-- and I hope you like it as well! Oxyrhynchus PapyriEdit

There are several Papyri already uploaded to commons (e.g: File:Oxyrhynchus 209 (p10).jpg). Yet I am in need for two more photos:

  1. [12] or [13]. + a version rotatated in the right direction for reading
  2. [14] [15] or another photo with the same content and improved contrast.

Both photos will be added to corresponding wikipedia articles in several languages. Thanks--Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 10:48, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

Aren't they PD? So u can upload it--Sanandros (talk) 14:08, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
I don´t know exactly. I hope somebody knows it --Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 14:24, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
In my opinion they are PD cause i saw some other papyris on commons which looked similar but i posted it also in the forum so let's c if someone else can give us also an opinion.--Sanandros (talk) 14:57, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
They are not in the PD. Why should they? The Papyri might be old, but the photographic work ain't. --High Contrast (talk) 16:01, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
They are PD in the US if {{PD-Art}} applies: Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. -- RE rillke questions? 20:07, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

Photo from the Russian State ArchiveEdit

For my article on the Russian preparliament during the Russian revolutionary period I would be greatful if someone could get hold of this picture and upload it into Commons. It is in the public domain both in Russia (as it was taken before the October Revolution) and in the US as it is from 1917. Thank you in advance!--Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 12:12, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

MiscellaneousEdit

  • A free image of the Discworld-esque flat earth - you know, the world balanced on four elephants standing on the back of a turtle. Happy-melon 10:13, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
    • This image apparently comes from a book by Camille Flammarion (possibly the same one as the famous Flammarion woodcut), and is presumably PD. We could probably use the poster (per Bridgeman v. Corel), but it would be better to find the original source. This one looks even nicer, but has no information about the source. There's another very similar image here — it's not quite identical, but the details are similar enough that they're probably based on the same original. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 22:27, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
    • Googling for the caption suggests that the Flammarion book the first image is from may actually be Histoire du ciel. Also found yet another version of the second image here. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 22:51, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
  • a schematic scale comparison of the smallest continent (Australia) and the largest island (Greenland). — Yerpo Eh? 14:14, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
    • Is this map what you are looking for? If not, just let me know here. Thank you -- JoannaSerah (talk) 01:04, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
      • This looks just the ticket, thanks. I included it in the en:List of islands by area to see if there are any comments. What font did you use so I can translate the text? Arial? — Yerpo Eh? 06:54, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
        • Yes, it was Arial. If you need it in any other font, or need anything moved around, just let me know. -- JoannaSerah (talk) 12:42, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
      • What exact Mercator projection did you use? I ask for two reasons: (1) Mercator projections are prone to strong distortions at high latitudes, which may affect Greenland and Australia differently. (2) Mercator is a conformal projection, which preserves angles (not distances or areas). For this size comparison I would suggest to use either an equal area projection (e.g. Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area centered on Greenland and Australia, respectively) or an equidistant projection (of some kind, with parameters chosen for the respective "countries"). I could help if needed... Siebengang (talk) 20:14, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
        • I'll look back and try to see what I used then. Not sure right off hand. I can always update it to use what you state, That shouldn't be any problem. -- JoannaSerah (talk) 21:54, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
          • I must say that I am not a map expert and don't have access to the computer that I had created the image on (PC crashed several months ago). I will say that I based it off of two different maps that gave distance scales on each. I re-sized the images so that the distance scales would match up and then did the overlay. Since actual distance scales were given, that would lead me to think that they were equal area maps, but I cannot say for certain. Can't really say about whether it was a Mercator map or not, but I don't think it was. -- JoannaSerah (talk) 22:15, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
          • Equidistant is not the same as equal area. It is kind of confusing that your image is used to illustrate the distortion problems of Mercator projections at high latitudes, and the metadata state that a Mercator projection is used for the comparison... I quickly made a similar picture in Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area projection(s), which shows the areal comparison correctly. -- Siebengang (talk) 14:53, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
            • Thank you. I had not kept up with where that was used and wasn't the one to put on the Mercator tag (I wouldn't have known to do that). Thank you for your work/help. -- JoannaSerah (talk) 18:26, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
