Brief Report

edit

Retro domácnost (in English Retro House) contest targeted members of the Facebook group Give away. The idea was built on the fact that these people have furniture at home that they could shoot and upload to Commons. Photos could then serve articles on Wikipedia.

The Commons infrastructure (this site) was created and sponsor prices were requested. Already there was the first problem that the sponsors did not roll at all and so eventually managed to get only a few diapers. Subsequently, a competition was announced on Facebook in the form of a pinned event. Although the interest in the competition attracted considerable interest, the subsequent 10-day competition was not attended!

The problem was solved by pinning the group to the poll. Surprisingly, more than 500 people attended the questionnaire and all said they did not know about the competition. The marketing group was asked if FB somehow hid some types of announcements, but without the result. The competition was then repeated, this time in the form of a pinned post and the announcement has spread to more groups. Again, to no avail, only one participant appeared after the competition.

So again, we issued a poll, which again had high attendance and again it was said that the main problem was that no one knew about the competition. Later, the hypothesis arose that this is not the real reason and that it is a reason for "decency" and that we should have left the second poll out of them I didn't know about it. Then perhaps choosing other options would show the true cause of the problem.

So the general idea is that it was not appealing to people. Yes, in a group, people get rid of things and then leave it, but at the same time, there is a relatively large group of people returning there. Rather, there were no attractive prices and also the system of competition and de facto Commons was difficult for them. Similarly, the Brutální Česko competition in the group Ošklivá architketura - 1 participant out of five expected.

For the organizer, it was a great frustration. For a year he heard from Wikimedia how the organization was to focus on organizing competitions, that it was the only way to attract new editors and then such a flop. Although as it turned out, it was not such a flop because the numbers, one, two new editors are common. Rather, it now seems that the problem is in the follow-up care for newcomers, this care de facto does not exist and there is a risk that the contestants will never return.

So next time I would concentrate on the already established models, which also give 1-3 editors such as courses and field activities. However, it is also necessary to consider projects of subsequent care for new editors. --Juandev (talk) 18:56, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
