Flickr review needed.

Hello,

files in the category Flickr review needed are still waiting for a review.
The bot in charge of the Flickr photos review has been stopped since September 30.
Is there someone here who could run FlickreviewR_2 bot or review the images ? Or could I get some instructions to run the bot myself ?--ContributorQ (talk) 08:31, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

Originality threshold

Hello. this diagram would be a good illustration for valve related topics in Wikipedia. From reading the relevant page in Commons it seems to me that it doesn't meets the threshold of originality. Could somebody with more experience regarding the threshold of originality provide his opinion in this matter?. Regards and thanks. Mario Castelán Castro (talk) 02:25, 8 October 2014 (UTC).

It's very hard to say, because threshold of originality cases are often subjective to some extent, and the thresholds vary from one jurisdiction to another. This exact drawing may be copyrightable, but the facts that it represents are not. I think the best option would be to create a new drawing from scratch with the same elements, and not only because of copyright reasons. There are several other issues with the image that make it less than ideal:
  • It is stored in lossy JPEG format, which is unsuitable for this type of illustration. PNG would be more appropriate. SVG would be the most appropriate.
  • It is language specific (English). Numbered labels allowing for a separate legend would be better. Using SVG would also allow more easily translatable text labels.
  • It has relatively low resolution. Higher resolution would be better. Again, SVG, allowing for a fully scalable representation would be the best.
For good examples, see File:Globe valve diagram.svg or several of the other SVG illustrations in Category:Cross sections of valves. LX (talk, contribs) 08:38, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

Remove "Previous File" restriction possible?

Hello Friends, This is Amos, Paul Ekman Group Publications and Permissions Specialist, writing on behalf of Paul Ekman, Ph.D. I am trying to upload a photo of Dr. Ekman to Wikimedia Commons for addition to Dr. Ekman's Wikipedia page. When I do so, I get an error that says "There was another file already on the site with the same content, but it was deleted." When I look at the details, it seems that user Jcb deleted the image due to copyright violation. This is great, I'm glad that there is such vigilance on Wikimedia. However, now I am the owner of the photo wishing to put it on Wikimedia with a CC-BY-SA license. Is there a way to remove the restriction or bypass it? Thank you for your support! Sincerely, Amos/P.E.G/Paul Ekman, Ph.D. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Paul Ekman (talk • contribs) 19:54, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

Please contact our support team. They will be able to restore the file. Thanks in advance. -- Rillke(q?) 20:25, 30 September 2014 (UTC)
Thank you Rillke. I have sent an email to permissions-commons @ wikimedia.org. Paul Ekman (talk) 15:14, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Failed upload

Hi, I'm trying to upload this image from Flickr; but I'm told "there was <a href="#">another file</a> already on the site with the same content, but it was deleted." I'd like to know the reason as to why this image was deleted but I cannot locate the deleted file. Ali Fazal (talk) 22:42, 4 October 2014 (UTC)

Most likely because it's a derivative work of the poster. --Denniss (talk) 23:01, 4 October 2014 (UTC)
I just saw a very similar message, and my question is: why is there visible HTML markup (the ‎<a>...‎</a> element) in the message? --Redrose64 (talk; at English Wikipedia) 13:49, 7 October 2014 (UTC)
This is because of bugzilla:70617. Try to ask there or try UploadWizard on beta labs to find out whether it is resolved. -- Rillke(q?) 03:51, 9 October 2014 (UTC)

Replacing file: the original still appears

I've been trying to replace File:Ebola_Xesteliyin_Simptomlari_(vector_image).svg with a newer version that corrects the many errors in the text. But going to the page still brings up the old version, and the new one is nowhere to be found. Any guidance? Frenezulo (talk) 00:39, 9 October 2014 (UTC)

First, try to clear your browser's cache while visiting the affected image, if this does not help, try to force new image generation by the servers. Rillke(q?) 03:47, 9 October 2014 (UTC)

Uploading a bulk video file

Hi, I would like to upload a bulky video file (approx 600 MB) on to Commons. When you are logged in to Wikimedia Commons, click on your username at the top and then look for "User uploads" in the left column of the page. Click on it and you will be taken to a visual list of files you have uploaded. Green Giant (talk) 08:58, 11 October 2014 (UTC)

upload photo

I am the owner of an Arizona historic property. In reviewing your article, I noted you didn't have a photo and want to upload one. When I attempted to do so, I got this message: "This wiki does not accept filenames that end in the extension ".bmp"." Can you tell me how to proceed? Wm. Epley -- 17:22, 11 October 2014 User:Wepley

.BMP is an image format which is usually completely uncompressed (at best "run-length encoded" in a few cases). As a consequence, such files are extremely large in file length for their pixel size. Most photographs should be uploaded in JPEG format. If using a lossless image format is important, try PNG... AnonMoos (talk) 22:31, 11 October 2014 (UTC)

Hello Could anybody verify, if this is an free usable file?! It is here marked as public domain - is it enough?

The template used there is equivalent to {{Anonymous-EU}}. Can't say whether it's valid -- it's really for things whose first publication is known to have been anonymous and before 1944, not for photographs of unknown origin and publication history... AnonMoos (talk) 22:42, 11 October 2014 (UTC)

Where does the image come from? {{PD-self}} is only appropriate if you actually created it yourself by pressing the shutter release button on your camera. This image has a rather low resolution, no metadata and kind of looks like it might be a screengrab from a video. LX (talk, contribs) 12:33, 19 October 2014 (UTC)

I would like to select a pic of Nobel laureate Dr. Jean Tirole, from Creative commons. (Rangakuvara (talk) 13:41, 19 October 2014 (UTC))

What do you mean? You want to select a picture – for what purpose? "From Creative Commons"? Creative Commons is a non-profit organization that develops copyright licenses that people can use to share their own works with the world. The organization creates very little content itself, and it's unlikely that they have a photo of Dr. Tirole. Also, you haven't really asked a question, so it's going to be really hard for anyone to provide any help. LX (talk, contribs) 14:53, 19 October 2014 (UTC)

Is this email address a mistake? If not, when should I use it?

Hello,

While reading one of the pages regarding uploading pictures (I have waited so long for permission from someone that I had to refresh my memory), I found the email address permissions@wikimedia.org here. Is this a mistake? I think the email address permissions-commons@wikimedia.org is on every other help page. If this is not a mistake, then please, when should I use the permissions@wikimedia.org address instead of the permissions-commons@wikimedia.org address? Many thanks in advance for your help... Dontreader (talk) 18:33, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

I believe that is a correct email address but it is the most general one. Please use permissions-commons if your enquiry is Commons-related. Green Giant (talk) 18:55, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

When the photo is a "still" from a music video, which URL should I use as the source during upload?

Hello,

A duo (Camille and Kennerly Kitt) that has an article on Wikipedia that is well known for their YouTube musical videos has accepted my request to release a still photograph from one of their videos to illustrate their work (they are the copyright owners because they film themselves using a camera on a tripod, and in fact, the entire video says Copyright Camille and Kennerly). My question is, which source should I use as the URL during the upload process? Since YouTube lets you start a video from a specific second, would it be okay to use the YouTube URL that begins to show the video one second before the still photo appears? For example, if the photo is from 2 minutes and 48 seconds in the video, may I use the YouTube link that would start the video at 2:47? P.S. They will send me the photo in higher resolution and without the copyright message. As always, many thanks for your generous help. Dontreader (talk) 05:23, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

Sounds reasonable to me. Considering the higher resolution version without copyright marks, I'd probably even go a step further and use something like Still from the video [url_to_the_video_at_2:47 name of the video], high-resolution still provided by XY via e-mail. Please remember to follow the instructions for permissions at COM:OTRS, or you will sooner or later run into troubles. Cheers, --El Grafo (talk) 11:09, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
El Grafo, thanks so much! I will copy your reply into an email because it's very detailed and I will follow your instructions accurately. I have dealt with these musicians in the past (I uploaded the first picture that's on their article), and they are extremely professional, so I'm confident that all the necessary instructions will be followed by both them and myself. Thanks again for your help, and have a nice day! Dontreader (talk) 17:07, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
No problem at all, always happy to help. Good luck with that, --El Grafo (talk) 18:08, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

Uploading large .djvu

I have a 400+ MB .djvu that I have tried several times to upload with Chunked Uploads through Upload Wizard. It doesn't seem to be working, though. It's supposed to be a replacement for File:Cajsa Warg.djvu, a low-quality scan with a page lapse that I recently noted. It's a different copy of the same printing and edition, but a color scan of much higher quality. I'm working on transcribing this book over at Swedish Wikisource at the moment.

Can someone help me out with this?

Peter Isotalo 20:22, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

If you know what JavaScript and API means, you are a power user and as such could try my chunked upload script: Install the script, go to File:Desired name.djvu, in the sidebar under tools, press upload (chunked), enter the whole file description (including license; you can copy it from one existing file to the textbox provided) and select the file on your hard drive. This script will tell you raw error messages so if you encounter one, you can post it here and we'll know what the issue is. In case it never finishes uploading, have a look into your upload stash and try publishing the file from there. -- Rillke(q?) 20:39, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
I'll see if I can figure those out. Thanks for the hints.

First upload from Flickr help

I have just uploaded an image from Flickr on to commons that is under the Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 Generic ((CC BY-SA 2.0). The image is this one. The file's original web address is this: https://www.flickr.com/photos/oscepa/15204413881/in/set-72157647068309437

I wanted confirmation from a more experienced editor if the upload is done correctly? Thanks --BierInTrout (talk) 13:34, 27 October 2014 (UTC)BierInTrout

Well, there are some potential issues. I'm not entirely convinced that the OSCE PA actually has the right to issue a valid copyright license to this file. A "photo courtesy of" statement generally indicates a non-transferrable permission without sublicensing rights. (In other words, the OSCE PA had the right to publish the photo, but presumably not under a license that lets other people use it freely.) As for the author field, OSCE PA is not the author of this photo; according to http://photo.unian.net/eng/detail/579066.html, it was taken by Sirotkina Anastasia (which should probably be Anastasia Sirotkina). She works for Ukraine's Paliamentary Press Service, which unfortunately does not appear to be in the habit of releasing their works under a free license. LX (talk, contribs) 19:03, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

Thanks, excellent answer and a great point regarding OSCE PAs possible right or lack of to give the mentioned license. In regards to the photo. As it is a) on OSCE Pas official Flickr page and b) it has a ShareAlike 2.0 licence in line with Wikipedia terms, from a technical point it appears that it is admissible to have it on Wikipedia. --BierInTrout

No, technically, we can't really keep images around if we have reason to believe that the license is not valid. We have the {{Flickrvio}} problem tag and the {{Flickrvionote}} for more obvious cases. In this case, I can't blame you for not spotting the problem, but the file probably needs to be deleted, and I've brought it up for discussion. Thanks for asking about it and for your understanding, LX (talk, contribs) 11:44, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

You should probably start by reading Commons:Guidance for paid editors. Virtually all recently created logotypes are automatically protected by copyright if they are above the threshold of originality. Recently created photographs are also automatically protected by copyright. LX (talk, contribs) 11:48, 29 October 2014 (UTC)
