Commons:Wiki Loves Classics 2019

Wiki Loves Classics 2019, the first edition of Wiki Loves Classics, is a photo contest whose purpose is to increase the amount of freely-licensed material related to ancient Greek and Roman monuments (and other ancient civilizations especially from the Mediterranenan area) on Wikimedia Commons. It also aims to improve the quality and quantity of Wikidata items and Wikipedia articles about them, including the illustration of the items/articles related to the uploaded pictures.

Photographers in the best places will get a participation certificate and a printed copy of their image of hand-made high quality paper by the Impresa Sociale Magnani of Pescia.

Participating countries 2019 edit

All countries taking part to Wiki Loves Monuments 2019 are inserted in this table.

Here is a list of countries which certainly have items related to classical antiquity (it also include previous civilizations). Please scroll the lists in order to know the pictures of monuments that you can upload. The presence in the lists depends on the legal situation in different countries, and some countries might not take part this year and we are not encouraging an upload without a national organizer.

Selection process edit

Jury edit

Wikimedians are mostly involved in the first steps of the selection processes, members from the academia join progressively the later steps.

Categories edit

We will select a winner and a runner-up for these five categories:

  • landscapes and views
  • coexistence or contrast of modern and classic
  • architectural details
  • museum collections and objects
  • epigraphs and writings

Another category was initially debated, namely "women in classics", but we could see at the categorization phase that there was not enough material. The "epigraphs" category was also at risk of being dropped but had enough decent upload and a clear defined nature. Next edition the categories will be proposed since the beginning and not adapted on the existing upload, so we can encourage a better aim in this direction.
