Count of uploaded images on the US websiteEdit

How did you create your clever counter of uploaded images on the US website? Can I copy it for the UK site please? --MichaelMaggs (talk) 09:49, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

HelloEdit

Hi. I'm Anisha Reddy from India. I have uploaded/sent a few images for "Wiki loves Monuments" under the same category. I just wanted to know when will you be announcing the winners and how will we be notified about the results? Regards.

The winners of the 2013 edition will be put on the page Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 winners (just as 2012 had a page). Romaine (talk) 19:57, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

KGS number ??Edit

I am trying to enter your contest, but find it very user unfriendly, firstly when I try to upload from my apple mac, it does nto have a continue button to proceed to the next step. Then when I do it on windows it is fine, but I have no idea what a KGs number is. Could you please let me know what it is and how to find the number

Hi, which country are you uploading from? From your Mac, have you tried other browsers if you used only safari? Maybe chrome or Firefox will work better. --Nkansahrexford (talk) 15:15, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Missing Historical BuildingEdit

Dear Sir or Madame,

What should we do if, upon reaching the location of a Red Pin, we discover the Historic Building is no longer standing or has been replaced by modern construction?

128.4.96.220 19:52, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

In that case, then I think there's no image to capture then. If the reconstructed building is in replacement of the old one, then perhaps its a good idea to capture. But if its a totally new building which has not relationship with the previous one that existed, I don't think it'll be a great idea to capture. --Nkansahrexford (talk) 15:18, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

ID issuesEdit

There are two things I don't understand. First time, when I uploaded 13 photos, ID was necessary to be written in the field predicted for it. A few days ago, I uploaded around 12 new photos, and ID was not asked for? Why is that? And, when I go to statistics list, I can see that other's users number of entries is becoming bigger, but mine still stands on 13, when I have uploaded more than 20. What is the problem??? Emir Mehović (talk) 20:50, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

Jack prestridge (talk) 00:36, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

When you upload using the country specific upload wizard, entering ID might be required as you said. But using the generic UploadWizard on Wikimedia Commons, there's no asking of ID. What statistics list you referring to? If you happen to not find your images in the category you expect to, then perhaps you didn't assign those images to the specific category. Perhaps you can double check if the images are assigned to the category you want. You can find the category a file is in when you scroll down to the bottom page of the image file in context. --Nkansahrexford (talk) 15:23, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Mobile appEdit

Hi there, I have SEVERAL PICS of monuments that I've been trying to upload using the MOBILE APP -through INCOMPLETE UPLOADS- and the WIRELESS connection at home, but even if I try to do so with only one, and not all selected at the same time, it just keep logging off and going to the mobile main screen. How it can be SOLVED in order to UPLOAD the pictures??

Kurara (talk) 08:18, 25 September 2013 (UTC)

I have personally also had issues with the mobile app. My solution? I upload using my browser. I switch to desktop mode and I'm good to go. Finding solutions as to why it might not be working on your device might be lengthier than jumping over to the website via browser and uploading through there. It might be tedious, but it'll save you the headaches. --Nkansahrexford (talk) 15:27, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Missing MonumentsEdit

I looked for a few monuments, and found them missing. Most notably to me, is the Tybee Island Light house, on Tybee Island, Georgia, outside Savannah (USA). Can you add it, please? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.204.2.237 (talk • contribs) 17:02, 25. Sep. 2013‎ (UTC)

I understood that Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 in the United States concentrates on monuments listed on the en:National Register of Historic Places. I guess, en:Tybee Island Light is not. --Alex (talk) 19:03, 25 September 2013 (UTC)
Actually, it is: http://www.nps.gov/maritime/light/tybee.htm. -- King of ♠ 19:07, 25 September 2013 (UTC)
Ops, sorry. Your are right, seems like it is part of the Fort Screven Historic District, see en:National Register of Historic Places listings in Chatham County, Georgia (where you can find a link to upload your photos). --Alex (talk) 19:58, 25 September 2013 (UTC)

I have found a monument that is not marked on your page. What do I need to do so that I can post that photo of this historic place?

A few of the coordinates for the historic sites are incorrect. For example, the Clubhouse-Student Union in Greeley Colorado; the coordinates put it out on a rural road in Johnstown (at least 10 miles away). This is also true on your interactive map (there is no Student Union building there as there has never been a college there). This is also true of the Jergens Site; it is a privately owned field/farm. I'm guessing this may be a large part of the reason there are no photographs of these sites.

Here are the correct coordinates for the Clubhouse-Student Union (which has been called Gray Hall since 1965): 40.409614,-104.692624

Change my nameEdit

Hi, Please help Urgent!

I created an account on Commons but was unaware that this name would be the byline for my pix. So I requested that the username be changed from janekszy to my full name Janek Szymanowski. This was done - great!

When I went in yesterday (Friday) and uploaded about 100 new pix I did not login with the new username (computer auto inserted old details) so the pix are not reflected to my name Janek Szymanowski but they are there in janekszy contributions.

I have tried every which way to move/delete re-upload to correct name etc but no luck.

If someone can delete the pix on janekszy then I don't mind uploading again to Janek Szymanowski so that Wiki does not say it is duplicate content.

Or if there is some way to move them immediately, that would be better still. Thanks and Regards, Janek

41.133.104.187 11:56, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi. I am not an expect on how to resolve that. But what I can say is, just log in for the rest of the uploads, using the name you changed to. The old name, as time goes on, maybe even after the WLM, you will be able to change, and that will reflect in all the old images you uploaded as well. --Nkansahrexford (talk) 15:31, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

I did a mistake is there a path to resolve it ?Edit

Question ID 111Edit

Dear Madam/ Sir,

Have a very nice day,

During the period of Sep/1st to Sep/30th 2013 I created an account and I uploaded abit less than 100 pictures. But I did a Mistake : I did not went through the list to upload them: I opened just my account and I uploaded them.

I am writing to ask if there is any solution to solve that: my name does'nt appear in the participant list and my pictures too. You can check my photos here and verify what I said in the following link:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3AListFiles&limit=100&user=IssamBarhoumi&ilshowall=1

Finally, I have to thank you for your understanding.

Question ID 111Edit

Reg. Template usage of {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2013}} with automatic allocation to this categ.

I have recently uploaded ~ 300 photos from Nuremberg and Ansbach during this month and don't know which ones are monuments and which are not. Figuring out wheather an object is a monument or not by myself takes too much time for me, locals can do it in "no time". Althouth, the photographs were done with that purpose ("as part of the WLM project"). Should I just insert the template in each file or not? (tried to discuss it hiere: Category talk:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2013#When to use it? but didn't get an answer since 13 September 2013) --Mattes (talk) 14:48, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

October, end of October 2013 is the final judgement of pictures?Edit

I am really confused by this "contest" and understood it to be something that people entered using pictures of their own choice that they have taken over this year, 2013. I also understood, what little I was able to understand about the rules, that we submitted pictures on our own, to judges that were plucked from the International Wiki employee roster - I did NOT understand that there was this huge requirement of personal time and working in committees and submitting photos that the 5 people who somehow appeared as "Officials" or "Official Judges" for my country were sending people out, assigning photos of monuments that needed to be photographed rather than a contest in which we submitted photos of our own choice and that we had until the end of October, 2013 to submit them.

I took photos of mostly PWA buildings in the capitol of the USA - but many of my photos are different for they are angular and taken so that, for example, the viewer simply sees th e intricate bronze, metalworked, swirl on the post of a PWA building, or the detail, angularly shot of a striking or unique item rarely noticed on one figure in a bronze statue that consists of 7 Soldiers and a Military Steed, mounted, w/ sword striking noticeably in mid-air, sword and soldier that is supposed to be the real focal point, what stands out and impresses the casually passing viewer - my pictures consist of the details that make these historical items, statues, buildings... not only memorials to those who went before us, blazing the historical trail that has been heavily tread upon by Americans who have forged the path thea at has lead us to where we are at in this stage of the development of our country.

Is there absolutely no way that I could submit my photos for consideration and judging for the 2013 Wiki Loves Monuments Contest During the next week? Or, must I wait until next year and then, if I choose to enter pictures, does it require heavy interaction w/ other members, photographing assigned monuments, creating facebook pages, etc organization and group formation/working together starting at the beginning of 2014?

Please clarify this for me. lmc

National contests handle these questions; see Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 in the United States which leads you to a site set up just for the USA. No, you don't have to ask to be assigned a target but a picture that doesn't illustrate an article hasn't much chance. No, the photographer needn't spend a lot of time on organization. That's for the judges, poor devils. Yes, though overall building photos tend to be most useful, details can also illustrate, thus have a chance. And yes, it's too late. As it happened, though I have uploaded several hundred new pictures this year, only a few were submitted to the contest, partly because I don't do pix of prize quality, despite their (I think) usefulness to illustrate Wikipedia articles. I certainly wouldn't hold back all year to await the next contest. Jim.henderson (talk) 12:23, 13 October 2013 (UTC)
Just wanted to clarify a bit more: if you want your images to participate in the Wiki Loves Monuments contest, you need to wait until September 2014. If that doesn't matter to you, you can upload them now. (WLM for 2013 has ended). —Mono 02:49, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

Error message "Campaign "wlm-us" has not been enabled."Edit

Question ID 111Edit

What is the correct means of contributing a photo after the end of the contest? I would like to upload photos of a monument (a US National Historic District listed on the map with a red pin). However, when I use the map upload tool (http://wikilovesmonuments.us/find-a-monument-to-photograph/) and click on the pin, I get a message in a pink box (on page https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UploadWizard&withCSS=MediaWiki:WLMUSA.css&campaign=wlm-us&id=4000672&descriptionlang=en&description=Livingston%20Manor%20Historic%20District,%20Roughly%20bounded%20by%20Cleveland,%20Grant,%20Harrison,%20Lawrence,%20Lincoln,%20Madison%20and%20N.%202nd%20Aves.%20and%20River%20Rd.%20Highland%20Park&categories=WLM%202013%20United%20States%20unreviewed&lat=40.501389&lon=-74.438056) that says "Campaign "wlm-us" has not been enabled."

I understand that the contest is over; I don't care about that. I just want to contribute my photos to the Commons. But if I were to just go to Wikimedia Commons homepage & upload a photo from there, it wouldn't be linked to the National Register of Historic Places. For example, the photo I uploaded during the contest (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fairmount_United_Methodist_Church.JPG) has a banner with a National Park Service icon that reads "This is an image of a place or building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States. Its reference number is 96001470."

Also, are there any plans to update the map so we can see which pins have turned from red to green?

Thank you! Gould363 (talk) 22:50, 19 January 2014 (UTC)

@Gould363: I have turned the campaign back on, so the upload tool should work now. As for the map, it updates gradually (I'm not exactly sure how) so it could conceivably take a few months. —Mono 18:38, 20 January 2014 (UTC)
Super, thanks for the quick response!
My only data point is that the pin for a site that I contributed a photo for on 7 Sept 2013 is still red. But I will assume that all is well. Gould363 (talk) 21:43, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

Check freedom of panorama in your country to see if it applies to those images you wanna upload. Othersies, you're good to rock and roll. Happy uploading. --Nkansahrexford (talk) 15:38, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

2) Is it allowed to cancel a photo after posting it & replace it by another one?

It is absolutely posible to replace an image with a new one. Just go to the file, and scroll to the lower side of the page, you should see "upload new file" or something of the sort. Click on that and you'll be able to upload a new file which will replace the file. You can search for "upload new file" when you're on the file page, In case you can't locate the link easily. --Nkansahrexford (talk) 15:42, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Question ID 111Edit

How do I edit the categories of my uploaded images? Thanks Juliet

Juliet220 (talk) 17:33, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

If you are asking about the upload, in the upload wizard window the third step of the upload) you can choose and manually edit categories for your file. If you have already uploaded the file, click "edit page" on the top and edit the categories manually.--Ymblanter (talk) 17:48, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Photos are not seenEdit

High user unfriendlinessEdit

Question ID 111Edit

A long comment from a disappointed new contributor!

Wikimedia does an amazing job, but my first participation makes me really disappointed.

You advertise on the homepage of wikipedia, to millions of users, asking them to help wikimonument.

I decide to help, in Switzerland.

1/ The list of monument is highly unpractical. Instead of being able to print a map of the village I will visit annotated with the missing monuments, I have to copy and past one by one the GPS coordinates of the building.

2/ The status is absolutely not uptodate. See e.g. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki4Alps/Hinterrhein

Some monuments have a photo, but their "coverage" is still "no image". Hence I cannot sort the column by "coverage" to know which photo to take.

Finding out which monument to photograph takes hence a lot of time.

3/ I take 2 pictures and upload them via the "upload" button https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UploadWizard&campaign=wlm-ch&id=3300&description=Gemeindehaus+%28altes+Schulhaus%29 First time it does not work. Second time it works. But where is the picture? I don't know.

I check the list https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki4Alps/Hinterrhein and the pictures I've just uploaded do not appear.

That's strange! I've just updated them from the list using the "upload" button??

I find the picture under my contributions: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ListFiles/Docdss&ilshowall=1 https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7b/Haus_Camastral.jpg https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gemeindehaus_(altes_Schulhaus).jpg

4/ I ask a colleague of mine who is a Wikipedia editor. He explains me that I should edit the list page, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki4Alps/Hinterrhein

But why isn't it clearly explained?

Then he says: write [filename] for the picture file but it does not work as one must not put [] -- even he did not know that! Then the picture appears. I say "but i must manually change the coverage status"! Again, I need to edit the page, finding out myself the appropriate code ("2" for "Less or equal to 30 images").

-> How do you expect users to know all this??

5/ I wonder: where is the photo actually used ? not on https://rm.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spleia not here https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spl%C3%BCgen_GR but here https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_der_Kulturg%C3%BCter_in_Spl%C3%BCgen

Well, what I discover is that wikimedia *already has the pictures of the two monuments I've photographed!* (3300 and 3297), and they're one year old. WHY DID I BOTHER HELPING WIKIMEDIA IF PICTURES ALREADY EXISTED???

SUMMARY:

=Edit

I've lost time listing pictures to photograph, photographing them, finding out by miracle how to upload them and keep the list uptodate -- all this for nothing.

I find this extremely disappointing. I hope you realize that the process must work in a much simpler, and efficient way if you hope to win users.

Because of your very visible advertisement on the front page of Wikipedia you engage the broad public, which makes it even more crucial to have a good workflow.

I hope you'll take the necessary steps to improve this.

Best regards,

docdss

PS Again, bad user friendliness: I send theses remarks by email to info@wikilovesmonuments.ch, an address found here http://wikilovesmonuments.ch/contacts .. but the email bounces back, as the address is not valid!

Фотографія не вірнаEdit

Do you have to attach a link to enter the Summer of Monuments contest or when it is uploaded it's in the contest?

Question ID 111Edit

I am getting the following error when I upload my pictures: "The upload succeeded, but the server could not get a preview thumbnail." What do I need to do to correct/prevent this?

The files are TIFF images, which I've seen used here before, anywhere from 9 - 12 MB in size.

api-error-unknownerrorEdit

Question ID 111Edit

I get the api-error-unknownerror when I upload pictures. Those pictures are JPG files, file size around 4,5 MB taken by myself with my Olympus Camera. The file upload properly in the first step. I tried to upload files one by one. I tried a different file after the first failure. I granted the license in the second step without altering my username (my real name contains umlauts and I was not sure whether this might cause trouble). I was sent to the third upload page with the description fields. There was no error so far.

I added the address data as written in the list of monuments for my city. In the first try, I left the category blank. In the second try I added a general category "Wohnhaus" as suggested. I added the name of the city. I did not add the district of the city because it contains umlauts.

I clicked the finishing button and got an error page with a light grey box. In the center of the box stood the Filename and in a separate line <api-error-unknownerror>. No other text there. On the right , there was a red button with an exclamation mark. In the upper right corner, there was a red asterisk mentioning that "this" was a required field. No fields were shown nor marked. On the left side inside the box there was a thumbnail of my image with another border around it.

In this form, there is no function for adding screenshots. This is why I describe the error page so thoroughly. My browser is Firefox 32.0.1/current on Mac OS X 10.9.4. I guess, there is either a hidden field on the description page or on of the three fields filled by me was not accepted. However, there is no evidence for the user as of what went wrong.

PROBLEM SOLVED:

The reason for this error is the prefilled file name field on the description page (first field). The hint says that this field must not be empty. Leaving it unaltered is a natural choice. However, the default name which is the files local name does not meet the requirements. I dont know in which regard, because the file name extension is stripped of which is the single requirement explicitly mentioned when clicking the question mark. But changing the default name to something different did the trick for me.

I believe the file name field should not be prefilled. This would prevent this nasty barrier in participation. Second, the error page should be fixed, explaining what exactly went wrong. Third, the try again button on the error page should provide the option to go back one edit step to change parameters. Because uploading takes such extended times in the broadband developing state of germany, it is plain inacceptable to upload the same file over and over again only to test which field was the culprit.

When I click browse, and select my picture, nothing happensEdit

Question ID 111Edit

I have created an account. When I click on the "select media files to share" button, I can open them from the proper file on my computer, but when I click open, nothing happens. I can't see anything uploading.

Question ID 111Edit

Is it possible to edit my contributions afterwards? Mostly add information.

If it is possible to edit contributions - There is wrong title of picture by "Nordelch" https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File%3AN%C3%A4sby_b%C3%A5thus.jpg. It should be Stallet (Stables) at Nasby slott. I can not find email address to him.

Памятники, которых нет в списке.Edit

Доброго времени суток! Могут ли пользователи самостоятельно добавлять памятники в список? В Харьковской области огромное количество памятников 1941-1945, но в списках их нету. Есть фотографии мемориальных комплексов, самолетов и танков времен ВОВ.

Entering existing photos from my accountEdit

Question ID 111Edit

Hi I would like to know whether it's possible to enter a photo into the monuments contest that I've already added to an article on Wikipedia. First of all I'm not sure whether this is allowed and if it is I would like to know how to do this? I'm an absolute newbie so I'm a bit stuck and can't seem to make it work. Or should I just upload the same photo again with a different file name or something like that? Thanks!Joyen69 (talk) 06:23, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

Joyen69 (talk) 06:23, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

If you uploaded the photo during September 2014, it is eligible for the contest. You just will need to add a WLM template to the file. If it was uploaded earlier, it is not eligible. In any case, do not upload the same photo for the second time.--Ymblanter (talk) 14:28, 22 September 2014 (UTC)
