Commons:Wiki Loves Museums India 2022

On the occasion of India's 75th year of Independence, we invite you to photograph museum collections that celebrate the stories of India.

The photo contest runs August 16 - September 30, 2022 & is open to residents of India. See the campaign website for details.

Prizes: Winner receives ₹25,000/-, 1st Runner Up receives ₹15,000/-, 2nd Runner Up receives ₹5,000/-

Note: Before uploading, please make sure you have read the captioning-instructions given below!


Step 1: Login / Create an account on Wikimedia Commons

  1. You can login on Wikimedia Commons with your Wikipedia account.
  2. If you do not have an account on Wikimedia Commons or Wikipedia, you can create a free account here.
  3. Make sure you have added a valid e-mail address in your account preference on Wikimedia Commons, enabled to receive e-mails so we can contact you if you have won.

Step 2: Your Photos must be

  1. of objects / artwork that were created before the year 1900.
  2. good in quality and high resolution.
  3. self clicked & self-uploaded.
  4. from a museum in India and aligned with the theme “The Indian Experience”.
  5. clicked not before January 2022.

Step 3: Upload your photos

  1. The last date to upload photos is September 30, 2022.
  2. The photos must be uploaded under the license Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 (CC BY)
  3. Photos must not have any watermark.
  4. The photos must have been labelled/tagged properly to identify the museum / institution where the photo has been taken, and details of the object / artwork.

Captioning Photos

While uploading photos, try to provide as much information as possible. This can include the information you find on a label next to the object at the museum.

  1. the name of the object and a short description
  2. name of the artist if known
  3. date and place of its making
  4. material
  5. the ACC No. as mentioned on the label or the name of the gallery / section it is displayed (location inside the museum)
