TIFF vs JPG edit

So since lots of images are available in both JPG and TIFF formats, if we categorize both versions we will end up with two versions of each image in all of their categories. This seems a little messy - should we only categorize one version? If we categorize both, could we get a bot to categorize the JPG version automatically once the TIFF version is categorized? That would be very clever to decide what to do indeed. --Pethrus (talk) 15:23, 1 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yes, in theory, the categories for the JPG and TIFF versions should be kept in sync automatically, so one only needs to categorize one of them. (Well, ideally, there should be no need to upload the same image in multiple formats; we should be able to upload the TIFF master file and MediaWiki should let users download in whatever format). Practically speaking, that will take someone to write such a bot, which will take some doing. My recommendation for categorizers would be to only categorize one version for each image, since eventually we'll sync them, and your time is better spent doing as many new categorizations as possible. I dunno; something that understands that, say, an SVG and a PNG are both of the same fundamental representation might be sensible. Of course, if I had my way, we'd overhaul the MediaWiki meta-data system properly, so that it was based on the FRBR model.

I notice that it's hard to tell if a jpg has been categorized based on the tiff, and vice versa; so I created a user script to hide all the jpg's, but copy their statuses to the tiffs. -- Ken g6 (talk) 23:23, 7 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Bot update edit

I have categorized dozens of files, a couple of days ago, and the bot does not seem to update their "done" status. An exemple is this file. What did I do wrong? --Pethrus (talk) 15:23, 1 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

The list of series for Commons:National Archives and Records Administration/Categorize has not been updated since 19 October 2012.
