Votes for Videos

Hy there! I saw videos in the gallery for voting. Are videos/animated gifs allowed to take part in the contest? This should be clarified in the description! Thx! Uwe Martens (talk) 14:39, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Uwe Martens, Most challenges are meant to be for photographs and some are explicitly stated as for videos. It is rare to have video submission in photo challenge, but there are no rules against it. If we create more rules, for example to exclude videos than someone would have to check all the files and check if they follow the rule. I think a better way is to exclude them through voting, if they do not meet the challenge topic. --Jarekt (talk) 20:29, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

Removal of images uploaded during challenge month but added at the end

I seem to recall in the past that if someone uploaded images during the challenge period but uploaded them a few hours after the end of the month, that it wasn't a problem as long as the images hadn't yet been processed for voting. This was the first time I forgot to submit until a few hours too late, and I see that my addition was just removed from the Arthropod challenge for this reason. Could someone clarify if 00:00 UTC is an absolute hard rule to add images to the page? — Rhododendrites ^talk |  22:53, 2 June 2021 (UTC)

@Rhododendrites and Jeff G.: That is correct, as it is stated in the Commons:Photo challenge/2021 - May - Arthropods code, the closing time for last year or so, is noon of the first of the month UTC or around midnight of the Hawaii time. That is the official time used by the count-down on the page. I usually do not remove any images uploaded too early or too late and the software used for processing (Commons:Photo challenge/code/CreateVoting.cs) removes them. Perhaps the confusion comes from the phrases like "May UTC" which are also on the page. That phrase comes from Template:Photo challenge rules, where we have translations of it in many languages. --Jarekt (talk) 01:48, 3 June 2021 (UTC)

@Rhododendrites and Jarekt: I'm sorry, I took "May UTC" literally. May be we should just say "May" or May (any timezone) because the idea is that the uploads count the whole month of May no mater which time zone you are in, so 1st of the month 12:01 am UTC+12:00 to last of the month 11:59 pm UTC+12:00, which is hard to explain. --Jarekt (talk) 02:38, 3 June 2021 (UTC)

But then I would take "uploads count" to mean we're talking about the date of the upload rather than the timestamp when that upload were included on the challenge page. I think that having a link to the upload page would be very helpful, particularly for new contributors.

I would suggest linking in these two places:

- 'Upload' in the Formal things yellow box / Participation / Upload bullet point
- where appropriate in each 'Challenges open for submission" section' - e.g. for the Bridges challenge, the word 'uploaded' in 'Photographs must be newly uploaded to...'

Wiki Science Competition 2021

Hi, if the themes of December show some possible overlap, I'd like to add a line (as done in 2019, I am sure I did so) that Wiki Science Competition 2021 is also open, so users can upload there and took part to both competitions (technically, in some countries three competition since the national upload selects additional prizes).

From December, 1st to December 15th/20th many countries are still open, including the miscellaneous international category.

Not sure which themes are going to be selected, but if they are related to wildlife or technical equipment or atmospheric events it might be useful to point out. Just a simple line with a reminder.If it's ok for you.--Alexmar983 (talk) 17:08, 9 November 2021 (UTC)
