Commons talk:Quality imports logo contest

This is the talk page for discussing improvements to Commons:Quality imports logo contest.

Scope edit

As "Quality imports" will be a highly visible page used on perhaps hundreds of thousands of images in the future, maybe even millions in the distant future, I think that the adoption its logo should be widely discussed and decided by the Wikimedia Commons community, after we've found 5 (five) of so of the mostly favoured logos we could hold a vote. Then after the vote we could adopt a logo, does this sound like a good idea? --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 11:35, 9 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Categories? edit

I was thinking of having separate logos of different types of categories, during the original launch of the page I included the categories:

  • 1.1 Quality imports general logo
  • 1.2 Quality scans
  • 1.3 Quality videos
  • 1.4 Quality sounds
  • 1.5 Quality books
  • 1.6 Quality 3D imports
  • 1.7 Quality maps

Proposals

But I am not sure if it should be reduced to a lesser amount. This is mostly because "Scans" is quite general and most books are scans and most maps will be scans, plus a cropped PD-Art photograph is often indistinguishable from a scan. I think that "Quality scans" can be dropped and integrated into the general logo. However, I do think that 3D scans probably should have their own category. These sub-categories exist both for making the voting progress easier (people only interested in photography might not care much about books 📚 and vice versa), but also to make them more discoverable for re-users, plus I think that the existing "Quality images" system should integrate with the "Quality imports" system in searchability, but that the SDC can have separate ways of searching for quality files in each category. As the scope of both "Quality images" and "Featured pictures" are both quite narrow I think that the scope of the "Quality imports" system should be as wide as possible to avoid the situation that lead to its creation in the first (1st) place, creating these parallel systems under the "Quality imports" umbrella ☔ would easily achieve this, though I think that separate logos could be handy as this will make them more recognisable, as these logos could be utilised in search interfaces (making it also more friendly for analphabetic people / illiterate people).

Multilingualism, colour blindness, and abstract concepts edit

One main issue with the current logo of the "Quality images" as raised by people like @Adamant1: and @Manjiro5: in this discussion is the recognisability and universality of the existing "Quality images" logo, perhaps from day 1 (one) we should try to select a logo that works regardless of the level English-language proficiency, colour perception, and just general familiarity of the people who wish to use the files found at the Wikimedia Commons. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 11:27, 9 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
