Commons talk:Wikimania 2014

Awesome edit

This sounds awesome :-) Thanks for starting this. Jean-Fred (talk) 15:04, 19 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

The brainstormed ideas, quite logically, feature heavily photographers. I am fine with that ; but if some people have ideas of other topics related to Wikimedia Commons that might be worth presenting, I could be interested in giving a hand on it (having no such idea myself at the moment :) Jean-Fred (talk) 15:39, 21 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, you're right. I'd be interested in seeing presentations around video or illustrations. --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 16:24, 21 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
I was more hoping for suggestions for non-content producers ; but ah well, seems only fair :-)
(and yeah, illustrations would definitely be a nice focus too).
Jean-Fred (talk) 18:19, 21 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ah, I didn't get that. Well, yes, of course. Something like "XYZ reading from his secret diary as a Commons admin" would be great as well :-)
Yeah, there should definitely be a session about the community aspects of commons. Maybe a panel discussion with opposing view points (balance between the goals and the means of the project, i.e. free content aggregation vs. community building). --Dschwen (talk) 19:04, 21 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

202 days left edit

The countdown is running: Only 202 days until the start of the 2014 Wikimania in London - high time to start planning "Commons:Wikimania 2014". Now there are many questions to ask. What do you think about the idea? What do we want to do together in the UK? What do we want to achieve? Are there any new proposals? But the real question is who wants to organise this event? Yours, --Matthias Süßen (talk) 13:27, 16 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

I agree, we need to get off our butts now. The call for submissions is open. Should we collect commons related submissions here? This would also be a good place to propose collabotarive submissions. Ping @Ralf Roletschek: for another photo workshop, and @Poco a poco: for another photo excursion? I'll probably submit a presentation on the FastCCI category intersection gadget. --Dschwen (talk) 16:24, 16 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Apart from the photo excursion, I was also thinking of submitting a presentation talking about the educational aspects of Commons to make out of absolute beginners a good amateur photographer. I think that this is great, is not known by many people and should be highlighted. If somebody else is interested in this topic I can share the stage :) Would like to submit the proposal in the next 3-4 weeks. Poco2 20:46, 16 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
I want to submit also a presentation (so as in Hong Kong) "taking good pictures with a cheap camera" but in London with Examples, with functioning technology ;) --Ralf Roleček 22:29, 16 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Sounds all interesting. I would like to join. But how do we celebrate the 10th anniversary of commons. Any ideas @Frank Schulenburg: ? --Matthias Süßen (talk) 10:00, 17 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hi folks, here's a quick update:
  • I talked to the Wikimania organizers while I was in London in December. It seems like there won't be a special Commons track as part of the regular Wikimania program.
  • Last Friday, I talked to Ellie Young, the Foundation's event manager for Wikimania. She told me that we'd get at least two rooms (30–40 people each) for the two days prior to the official conference start. I also asked her to reach out to Jessie Wild (who's responsible for Wikimania scholarships) and ask whether we could get 10 scholarships allocated to Commons photographers who could otherwise not afford to come to London. I'll keep you in the loop on this.
  • With that said, here's what I suggest. We could have a 2-day preconference for Commons community members on August 6 and 7 (Wednesday and Thursday). On day one we could have a phototour in or around London, with a nice dinner at the venue in the evening. On day two we could arrange our own program in two tracks (given the fact that we'll have two rooms available). Of course, this wouldn't prevent us from submitting proposals for the official program as well. I was thinking of a joint presentation of some of us that looks back at the past 10 years of Commons. How does that sound?
Please let me know how this all sounds to you and how you want to proceed. Best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 22:03, 19 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Sounds great. I'd be interested in contributing to the History of Commons presentation. I could contribute on technical stuff, Geocoding, Quality Images. I'm sure we can spice it up with stats graphs/heat maps and example images. --Dschwen (talk) 23:34, 19 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, count me in as well if needed. Though I’m quite a Commonist youngster I spent quite a lot of time trying to write our history in COM:LOG (playing with the idea of one day making a timeline like Guillom’s). Jean-Fred (talk) 09:09, 20 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Jean-Fred: I think we can do something better and more interactive. Let's consort soon :) guillom 10:19, 20 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
@Guillom: Yup, sounds like a plan (did you get my emails, by any chance?) :) Jean-Fred (talk) 19:06, 20 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Submissions edit

Hi! I have put one of my threats into practice (the other one is the photowikimeetup, yet to come) and just submitted a presentation to the organizers of WM14: How Commons made a quality photographer out of me. Let's see how it goes, and, of course, if somebody is interested, sign up! :) Poco2 21:06, 10 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

I have also submitted a talk: FastCCI: Taming the Commons Category Tree. Ditto, sign up if you are interested :-) --Dschwen (talk) 23:39, 10 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

IDIDIT. @Dschwen: & @Poco a poco: : Do you need help? --Matthias Süßen (talk) 19:38, 19 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Matthias, thanks a lot for your offer. I don't think I need help for the slides, but maybe for the photowikimeetup later on. It would be great to count with more Commons submissions, less than 2 weeks left. Poco2 21:08, 19 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, thanks, I think I have my talk covered. Who is organizing the photowikimeetup? You, Poco? I really hope I can make it, HK was definitely a lot of fun. --Dschwen (talk) 23:27, 19 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Is everyone still interested? edit

Hi, I'd like to get some feedback on whether people are still interested in getting together prior to the official start of the conference. Registration is open since today and the organizers would like to know whether we need space on the days prior to August 6th. Best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 16:24, 6 May 2014 (UTC) Reply
