Description

Merchants and Mechanics' Savings Bank on the NE corner of Tenth St. and Pennsylvania Ave., NW, 5/31/08 "Washington Times" (demolished). Geotagged.

By 1908, the red brick D.C. of the 1880s and 90s was fading: to "modernize", the bank had just had this building's original facade (inset) simplified and clad in stone by local architect B. Stanley Simmons.

The sterile, imperial Pennsylvania Ave., NW of today was still decades away, but the "honest mix of beauty and squalor" was on its way out - along with the oyster bars, beer halls, farmers' markets, coffeehouses, cheap theaters, and vibrant street life.

The site is currently occupied by the J. Edgar Hoover Building.
