Description'Albert', Hermaness - geograph.org.uk - 1126723.jpg |
English: 'Albert', Hermaness. An adult Black-browed Albatross (Thalassarche melanophris) was more or less resident on the Saito outcrop at Hermaness from the early 1970s until 1995. Known affectionately as 'Albert Ross' or just plain 'Albert', the albatross became one of the main ornithological attractions of Shetland during its residence. Most sightings were from March to August, but the earliest date was 14th February 1982 and the latest was 7th October 1984. From 1976 onwards, the bird even built a nest and the fact that infertile eggs were not laid in the nest suggested that 'Albert' was a male in more than just name.
The final sighting was on 7th July 1995, but questions about 'Albert's' presence were so frequent that Scottish Natural Heritage placed a mock obituary in the Hermaness Interpretative Centre. It is generally considered that 'Albert' was probably the same albatross that was seen on Bass Rock in the Firth of Forth in 1967-69, while one in Iceland in July 1966 was possibly also the same. If so, that would make 'Albert' at least 32 years old when last sighted. Another Black-browed Albatross attended a Gannet colony in the Faroe Islands for 35 years until 1894, when it was shot. It is also possible that an albatross on Sula Sgeir in 2006 and 2007 was the same bird, although where 'Albert' spent the intervening decade is unclear.
