Description'Jane Austen House', 8 College Street, Winchester - geograph.org.uk - 1221294.jpg |
English: 'Jane Austen House', 8 College Street, Winchester. Jane Austen came to Winchester on 24 May 1817, gravely ill with what is now believed to have been Addison's disease, to be attended by Giles-King Lyford, surgeon at the Winchester county hospital. She stayed in this house on College Street, adjacent to Winchester College (see 1221302). She died here on 18 July, aged 41, and is buried in the cathedral. The house is listed at grade II* and dates from the late 18th century. Despite the appearance of the 'Jane Austen House' in all the tourist guides, it is a private house with no visitor access.
