Immunofluorescent image of vimentin (green) and alpha-actin (red) distribution in cultured rat cardiac (myo-) fibroblasts. The image is obtained using confocal microscope after staining of vimentin (green) and alpha-actin (red) in primary culture of rat neonatal fibroblasts with fluorescence-labeled antibodies in the Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology, NAS of Ukraine. Fibroblasts are the main cells of connective tissue which produce proteins of intercellular matrix, for example collagen. One of their molecular markers is vimentin that forms intracellular intermediate filaments. Under certain conditions (tissue damage or hypoxia) these cells can be transformed to myofibroblasts, that additionally produce smooth muscle protein alpha-actin allowing them to become contractile. Myofibroblasts are necessary for regeneration of tissue (wound healing, scar formation, etc).
