The citadel is of medieval origin, with the surrounding walls constructed starting in the late 15th century.
This fortress is considered one of the best examples of ancient Russian defensive architecture.
The height of the Krom walls, occupying an area of 3 hectares, comes to 8 meters, while their thickness is up to 6 meters.
The Krom was the administrative and spiritual centre of the Pskov Republic.
The Pskov Kremlin, together with the other city’s fortifications, experienced more than a hundred wars and dozens of sieges, but actually, was destroyed only once - as a result of betrayal, rather than the fall of the walls. It surrendered only to the fascist invasion: after occupation by the Nazi, the Krom, which was in active military use nearly 1,000 years, turned into ruins.
It's a Russian nominated candidate site on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List under the 'Great Pskov' nomination.
