English: The painting was inspired by Nikolay Karamzin’s novella Poor Liza (1792) that narrates about a young peasant girl, Liza, who committed suicide, when her seducer, the nobleman Erast, had cooled of her and then abandoned her for the sake of an old but rich widow. |
