English: In the 1920s, the leather industry flourished, but as leather was considered unclean in Hindu doctrines, it was handled by the Chandala, the lower caste of the caste system. Hakka people, who did not belong to the caste system, joined this industry in serendipity. During its heyday, there were over 300 leather factories in the Tnagra tannery area on the eastern outskirts of Kolkata, accounting for one-third of Kolkata's leather production. In 1995, the Indian government required leather factories to relocate due to pollution factors, and the Hakka community also moved accordingly. As of June 2023, there are on leather factories left in the Tannery area. Only the Leather New Town still has around 10 leather factories that are operated by Hakka people. |
