中文（臺灣）：在西螺大橋興建以前，濁水溪上只有2座陸橋與1座鐵路橋，經各界努力後，並於昭和12年(西元1937年)開始動工，爾後因為太平洋戰爭爆發後，因鋼鐵需求量大，建完32個橋墩後便停工(於美軍地圖上有繪有橋墩)，二戰結束後，國民政府來台，經前西螺街長廖重光先生、前西螺鎮長李應鏜先生及各界努力要求復工，最後靠美援並於民國41年(西元1952年)5月8號正式復工、12月25日完工，並於民國42年(西元1953年)1月28日正式通車，當時西螺大橋為遠東第一大橋，並且長度僅次為美國舊金山大橋。於民國89年(西元2000年)時，因為中煞大橋及溪州大橋(新西螺大橋)的完工，且對西螺大橋來說有點老舊，曾被提議拆除，但經各界努力保留下來，最後轉型為觀光用途。 |
