Original caption
U.S. Engineer Office photograph of the 43rd Street, or Ewalt Street Bridge, spanning the Allegheny River. The wooden covered bridge, built in 1870, connected Butler Plant Road in Millvale to 43rd Street (formerly Ewalt Street) in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville section. The bridge was demolished in 1924 and replaced with the Washington Crossing Bridge at 40th Street. The 43rd Street Bridge was the last covered bridge in Pittsburgh. Note the sign at the top of the portal restricting vehicles to travel at speeds no faster than a walk with a penalty of $5.
