Description0112021 Johar Memorial, Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh 010.jpg |
English: The Johar Monument (Jauhar Smarak) is a memorial to the numerous Rajput Hindu girls and women who committed mass suicide on 29th January, 1528 CE. They chose to die just after their husbands, fathers or brothers left under the command of Medini Rai to fight the much larger Mughal army. Many walked into fire, others jumped into the nearby water tank with weights. The tank is now remembered as the Johar Tal. The monument is outside the later rebuilt and restored Chanderi fort.
This was one of several mass suicides recorded in Indian history between the 14th and 17th century, during a period when Hindu-Muslim wars raged on the Indian subcontinent. These mass suicides were motivated by their preference for honor over life, a desire to avoid capture, enslavement and rape by the invading army. This memorial was built in 1932 by the then princely state of Gwalior. |
