It's a new configuration by Boeing of their 737, a 737-700C (C for Convertible). The C-40A is faster, quieter, meets current international noise regulations, and has extended flight capability. Add to that the fact that it works in a passenger configuration (121 pax), a cargo configuration (7 pallets for 40k lbs.) or a combination configuration that holds 3 pallets and 70 passengers and you have the ideal 21st century logistics aircraft and an excellent replacement for the C-9. The Navy has ordered six C-40As, VR-59 will give up one of theirs later in 2002 to a Jacksonville squadron (who will receive the remaining 2). In a recent ceremony VR-59's crew named two of their aircraft in memory of the September 11th attacks: Spirit of the Pentagon and Spirit of New York City. VR-59 is one of 14 Fleet Logistics Support Squadrons in the Naval Reserve that provides 100 percent of the Navy's worldwide in-theater medium and heavy airlift support. Fleet Logistics Support has no counterpart in the Regular Navy. |
