Description

A scarecrow exhibit at Baildon Scarecrow Festival, 2023, in Baildon, West Yorkshire, England. It was a one-day festival and in the afternoon there was light rain. There were scarecrow festivals in the town for some years, but this is the first scarecrow festival in Baildon after a 5-year hiatus. Inhabitants of the town are invited to create a scarecrow or other figure or effigy inspired by a theme, this year's theme being All Things Royal.

The exhibits are non-commercial artworks, made to the inhabitants' own designs, and displayed in front of buildings and in public spaces in the town. The scarecrow trail attracts tourists, who pay a small sum for the trail guide in aid of Zarach, a charity which assists children living in poverty. The exhibits are dismantled soon after the festival. This exhibit represents a scarecrows' tea party, with scarecrows knitted to the designs of Jean Greenhowe. The one lying down is the iconic 1986 male scarecrow design, with the mouse on the hat. This exhibit was not intentionally at the mercy of young children, one of whom was walking around on the scarecrows. They are photographed as found.
