Cartoonist: Edward Windsor Kemble Source: Harper's Weekly Date: August 17, 1912, pp. 14-15In this Harper’s Weekly cartoon, Progressive Party presidential nominee Theodore Roosevelt is a king who knights party bosses as “leaders.” William Flinn of Pittsburgh is the first to receive the honor, while Tim Woodruff of Brooklyn, New York, winks at viewers while he waits. Wearing a barrel of money is businessman George W. Perkins, chief donor and fundraiser for and co-chairman of the Progressive Party. He sat on the board of the directors of International Harvester. The Bull Moose decorating the back of Roosevelt’s royal robe was a symbol of the Progressive Party. |
