Description

This station name sign detail is a look at New York City subway architecture.

The Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT) built its subway stations in a very utilitarian manner, but made sure to put in some interesting architectural details, like the tulip shroud around the number 110 and the decoration on the ceiling beam, to ensure that the stations wouldn't look too utilitarian. The Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit (BMT), a second subway operator, had a similar but different architectural style, while stations built by the city itself (IND) were much more plain. All three subway systems were integrated into one in 1940.

This is the 110th Street - Cathedral Parkway station, located at 110th and Broadway in Morningside Heights. This is part of the original 1904 IRT line that ran from 137th Street and Broadway to City Hall via Times Square and Grand Central Terminal; today, it is a stop on the No. 1 line.
