sowie die in Betstühlen knienden Stifter, auf den Flügeln innen die Heiligen Cäcilie und Valerian, auf den Außenseiten der Flügel die Verkündigung. Als zugehörig gelten zwei heute verschollene Standflügel mit den Heiligen Urban und Sigismund. Anhand der Entstehungszeit des Altars und der an den Betstühlen angebrachten Wappen von Zollern und Bayern sind die Stifter als Burggraf Friedrich VI. – als Kurfürst von Brandenburg Friedrich I. – und seine Gemahlin Elisabeth von Bayern-Landshut zu erkennen, zu deren Hauptresidenzen die Cadolzburg zählte. Der rote Adler auf dem linken Betstuhl Friedrichs I, deutet auf die 1417 erfolgte Belehnung Friedrichs mit der Mark Brandenburg hin. 1426 zog sich Friedrich I. auf die Cadolzburg zurück, der Altar muss nach 1426 entstanden sein. 1850 machte der preußische Jurist und Geschichtsforscher Julius von Minutoli das im Zuge seiner Forschungen über Friedrich I. wiederentdeckte Werk publik. Nach dessen Besichtigung 1873 und auf seinen dringenden Wunsch erhielt Kronprinz Friedrich (III.), diesen als Geschenk.
