Summary edit

Description
English: These primitive balances were common in SE Asia in the 1960s. An object being weighed is in a pan (or on a hook for meats etc) suspended from one of two or three fixed positions at the thick end. A known weight is suspended from the stick's thin end, slid along the 'calibrated' stick until the stick is horizontal, and the (rough) weight is then read from the stick markings. In Malaysia (and in other parts of SE Asia), weights were often measured in 'kati' (catty), an ancient Chinese measure equivalent to about 605 grams.
