Summary edit

Description
English: In 1687 when Henri Joutel was passing through the Chicago region, he was told the place was named "chicagou," after the garlic (French,"ail"). But the word "Chicagou(a)," in the French/Miami-Illinois dictionaries of the time (cf. le Boulanger and Gravier) was defined in its strict definition as "skunk." That is NOT a plant. The actual word for the abundantly growing smelly plant found in the dictionaries was "wanissisia", the correct name for the allium tricoccum. When the skunk-word was used for the plant, it was used, as known in linguistics, as a METONYM. On coincidental analogy, today the word "skunk" can be used as a metonym for a type of marijuana. "Skunk" can neither be used synonymously for marijuana nor (French) ail. If named after the plant, modern Chicagoans should the better be called wanissisians. Incorrectly associating the "chicagou"-word/spelling with the allium tricoccum was done by Joseph Kirkland in 1892, NOT John Swenson in 1991, see Kirkland, p. 8 --> https://archive.org/details/storyofchicago00kirkl/page/8/mode/2up
