| Description |
English: Building number 16 Bachelors Walk (along with Building number 59 Abbey Street) was part of the Dublin office and stores of E & J Burke Ltd. The E & J Burke Ltd company was where Matt Talbot got his first job. After he left school at the age of 12 he got a job as a messenger here. E. and J. Burke were brothers, Edward Frederick Burke (1827?-1887) and John Burke (1829-1892) and they presided over a multi-national company involved in distilling, brewing, bottling but most of their business was made up of exporting Guinness to the huge North American market.
Although headquartered in Liverpool the company had an extensive presence in Dublin. Both 16 Bachelors Walk and 59 Abbey Street and the North Lotts laneway between the two opposing buildings were used by the company to serve as offices, production facilities and storage. |
