Description
Deutsch: Farbfotografie von Paul Haag aus dem Jahr 2004 des gemeinfreien aus einer privaten Sammlung. Das in Braunschweig ab 1744 und später entstandene und nicht signierte Gemälde wurde als Digitalisat im Bildindex der Kunst und Architektur hochgeladen und dort beschrieben unter dem Titel

„Selbstporträt des Malers Ludolf Ernst Andreas Lafontaine“

Ein Nachfahre Lafontaines, Bruno Heusinger (1900-1987), beschriftete einen auf der Rückseite des Gemäldes aufgebrachten Zettel mit den Worten

„Ludolf Lafontaine, geboren in Celle 1704, gestorben in Braunschweig 1774, Hofmaler Herzog Karls I. von Braunschweig, gehörte zu meinen Mitgau-Vorfahren (Mitgau, Gemeinsames Leben 1770-1870, Wolfenbüttel und Hannover 1948, Seite 373). Lafontaine porträtierte unter anderem Mitglieder der Braunschweiger Freimaurerloge, zu der er wohl selbst gehörte. Dieses Selbstporträt von ihm gehörte der Loge, wurde 1933 bei der Verwüstung der Logenräume beschädigt (Stich in die Leinwand). Ich konnte es auf Hinweis von Karl Steinacker käuflich erwerben und ließ es restaurieren.“

Bei Thieme-Becker, Bd. 22, (1928) heißt es auf Seite 208 zudem:

„17 Ölporträts der Gründer der Schottenloge in Braunschweig (jetzt in der dortigen Freimaurerloge 'Carl zur gekrönten Säule'), darunter sein Selbstbildnis (L. war einer der ersten Freimaurer in Deutschland); unbezeichnete handwerkliche Durchschnittsarbeiten." Laut brieflicher Auskunft des Sekretärs der Loge "Carl zur gekrönten Säule", Kurt Schönauer, am 7. März 2004 sind alle anderen 16 Bildnisse verloren, jedenfalls in der Loge nicht mehr existent. Da die Braunschweiger Loge 1744 gegründet worden ist, muss das Bild danach entstanden sein.“
