Description
Design for the Dome Fresco of the Monastery Church in Ettal. Saint Benedict ascends to the Holy Trinity enthroned on the clouds in heaven. He is surrounded by saints, angels and church dignitaries. To the left of Benedict a group of angels displays the Miraculous Image of Mary, a painting venerated in Ettal. The painting was created as a design for the main scene of the dome fresco in the Benedictine Church of Ettal. The original oval format of the oil sketch was later expanded into a rectangle. Works of this nature later found their way into the picture galleries of patrons and collectors.
