Summary edit

Description

This is one of the famous "pieces of eight" of pirate lore, that were widely circulated in the Americas and Asia. The M with the small o above it on the reverse is the mint mark for Mexico City. The initials F M identify the assayer at the mint, Antonio Forcada y la Plaza.

The coin is covered with "chop marks" that are hammered into the coin by Chinese coin testers and money-changers after they verify the coin’s authenticity.

The 8 reale coin was the most popular currency in the colonial US and was often cut into eight pieces to make small change. One eighth of a reale was referred to as one bit, which is where the "two bits" nickname for the quarter originated.
