Title
Johnson's Italy. - Venetia, Kingdom of Italy, Piedmont & Lombardy, Aemilia Tuscany, The Marches & Umbria and the States of the Church.
Description
English: A marvelous 1864 map of Italy by the American cartographic publisher A. J. Johnson. Depicts the Italian peninsula in the midst of its struggle for national solidarity. Shortly before this map was published Garibaldi and his Red Shirts were fighting to unify the disparate city states: Venetia, Kingdom of Italy, Piedmont, Lombardy, Aemilia, Tuscany, the Marches, Umbria, Sicily and the Papal States. This is reflected in above map by the national barriers segregating both the States of the Church and the Duchy of Venice from the rest of Italy. Includes the Kingdom of Sardinia, Corsica, and Sicily. Lower left hand quadrant features an inset map of Malta. Prepared by A. J. Johnson for inclusion as plate nos. 88 and 89 in the 1864 edition of his New Illustrated Atlas… Dated and copyrighted: “Entered according to Act of Congress in the Year of 1863 by A. J. Johnson in the Clerk’s Office of the District Court of the United States for the Southern District of New York.
