Illustration of sculptures from Cave XXII at Ellora from James Burgess. The spectacular site of Ellora, in Maharashtra, is famous for its series of Buddhist, Hindu and Jain cave temples excavated into the rocky façade of a cliff of basalt. The works were carried out under the patronage of the Kalachuri, the Chalukya and the Rashtrakuta Hindu dynasties between the sixth and the ninth centuries. Cave XXII, Nilakathan, is a part of the Hindu cave temples at Ellora which dates from the 8th century. The figures illustrated include Vishnu or Karttikeya (bottom left) and Ganesha and a skeleton Bhringi or Kala with two arms and outspread hair (bottom right). The figures illustrated on top are a group of Bodhisattva. |
