Summary edit
Description18th-century marbled paper detail from Marbled endpaper, between 1720 and 1770, from Quintilian ed. Burmann, Leiden 1720 (cropped).jpg |
English: Marbled endpaper from a copy of M. Fabii Quinctiliani de institutione oratoria libri duodecim, cum notis et animadversionibus virorum doctorum, summa cura recogniti et emendati per Petrum Burmannum. Lugduni Batavorum, Apud Joannem de Vivie, MDCCXX (i.e. Quintilian’s Institutio oratoria, ed. by Pieter Burman(n) the Elder). We don’t know if the book was bound immediately after its publication, but it must have been bound before 1770, as a owner’s notice on the half-title tells us. Therefore we can date the marbled paper between 1720 and 1770. The book must have been bound either in the Netherlands or in Germany (according to another owner’s notice, the German philologist E. F. Wustemann owned the book in 1817).
