The village parish church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, whose feast day is 19 December, which could indicate a specific date for the photograph. Joshua Biltcliffe was born at Penistone, and first took up photography at Thurlstone, later returning to Penistone, where he combined his photographic business with a general store at 6 Bridge Street. He, with his sons John Thomas and Fred became Joshua Biltcliffe & Sons. A further studio was opened in 1904 at Skelmanthorpe. The reverse is stamped with 'Biltcliffe, Penistone & Skelmanthorpe.'
