Description

Automobiles Darracq was founded in 1897 by Alexandre Darracq of Suresnes, France, in the ealy 1900s, amalgamated with the London company, Clement Talbot, becoming Suresnes Talbot Darracq, and in 1922, shortened to Automobiles Talbot. Factories were in London as well as Paris. Businessman Antonio Lago joined the failing company in 1932, to revive the business, racing cars produced from then were badged Talbot-Lago. This is one of three cars built for the 1926/27 Grand Prix seasons. This first Grand Prix car to have an offset driving position, the engine and gearbox were mounted to the left, allowing the transmission shaft to run past the side of the driver creating a lower driving position and a lower centre of gravity. At the Talbot 700's first race at Brooklands in 1926, they had mechanical problems, second time out though again at Brooklands, they took first and second places. Melbourne driver Jack Day acquired the car in 1948 and raced in Australia including the 1953 Australian Grand Prix but retired with mechanical issues
